Yeah, I've heard it, but it's a load of crap. In the past three years I've taken 116 semester units worth of courses, and I've never had a class that was taught by a TA rather than a professor, with the exception of discussion sections (supplementary meeting that do not introduce new material, but allow small classes to clarify those things covered by the lecturers) and lab classes (which aren't theoretical in nature, and hence the TAs are more than qualified to do excellent teaching in this area). The only times I've even heard of TAs teaching a course entirely is when they create a course based on their area of expertise. In the MCB department, virtually all classes have 3 different professors assigned so as to have the material taught be closely related to the area of expertise of the professor.merle said:I'm much more concerned with the quality of undergraduate education there. The professors are still great, but due to state budget cuts and the low tuition (compared to other state schools, not to mention private schools), class sizes have become unbearable, graduate students do too much of the teaching, etc., etc. I'm sure you've heard all this before.
Sorry, but the "Berkeley = TAs for teachers" is a myth.
