Do I want to be in SF, LA, or SD?

I'm much more concerned with the quality of undergraduate education there. The professors are still great, but due to state budget cuts and the low tuition (compared to other state schools, not to mention private schools), class sizes have become unbearable, graduate students do too much of the teaching, etc., etc. I'm sure you've heard all this before.
Yeah, I've heard it, but it's a load of crap. In the past three years I've taken 116 semester units worth of courses, and I've never had a class that was taught by a TA rather than a professor, with the exception of discussion sections (supplementary meeting that do not introduce new material, but allow small classes to clarify those things covered by the lecturers) and lab classes (which aren't theoretical in nature, and hence the TAs are more than qualified to do excellent teaching in this area). The only times I've even heard of TAs teaching a course entirely is when they create a course based on their area of expertise. In the MCB department, virtually all classes have 3 different professors assigned so as to have the material taught be closely related to the area of expertise of the professor.

Sorry, but the "Berkeley = TAs for teachers" is a myth.

There is no need to be so rude about it. If you will notice I was talking about the BAY AREA. This is not a synonym for San Francisco but rather for the area which includes San Francisco, San Jose, as well as San Mateo and Santa Clara counties (and probably a bunch more places I'm not listing). This thread really should be closed since it has degenerated into people fighting/insulting people over something as stupid as which part of the state they prefer.
I think it was pretty clear that when BPM said 8 by 8, he meant SF. The thread is "SF, SD, or LA"--you'll note that "Bay Area" is used seperately. Seemed to me like you were being rude to BPM (and yes, I know he's being rude, but don't get into a pissing contest if you don't want to end up reeking of urine).

Southern Californians are in love with themselves, with their beaches, and with their money. That is why I don't like them. Not because I don't think its nice, but their personalities are so polar opposites of ours, that it made living there unbearable.

Oh my GOD! WEEPING JESUS ON THE CROSS, THIS IS HILARIOUS!!! As if SFans aren't even more in love with their "culture," their pretty skyline (do you have any idea how many Bay Area people started freaking out about the GG Bridge after 9/11? It didn't even make sense--the targets on 9/11 were the Pentagon and the WTC, which are both quite directly symbols of American commerce and military. Had the Statue of Liberty and the Washington Monument been targeted, the fears might have made sense), and they love their money at least as much (in my experience more). And God forbid you try to be a person without a degree, because the intellectual snobbery here is far more overt than any degree of physical beauty heirarchy that may exist in SoCal.

Hey Legend, I think there's actually some serious thought going into splitting up the state. It's just getting way too big to handle. Even though I'm a SoCal person for life, we need NorCal much more than they need us. We have lots of people and Hollywood, that's about it.
The Constitution clearly states that you cannot divide one state into two or more. The only exception was Virginia at the time of the Civil War. So none of this talk should ever be perceived as serious--it isn't.

And what makes you think that SoCal needs NorCal anymore than NorCal needs Socal? What a silly thought.

I think halfing the state is a good idea, because its obvious from the posts here that people from norcal and socal can't get along. Seeing as I have gotten my fill of bickering and have tired of watching people from both parts of the state make idiots out of themselves all I have to say now is: ciao! 😉

Hmmm... I guess you missed the big news stories about the al Qaeda video tapes that showed footage of the Golden Gate Bridge, Disneyland, and the Sears Tower in Chicago among others as possible targets? Given that al Qaeda was taling about attacks on symbolic targets, and at one point a terror alert was issued on West Coast bridges, I don't think the fears were totally unfounded. And that is why the California National Guard was stationed on that bridge and others in SoCal.

I'll leave it for Tim Duncan (Dunkin) Donuts to squash and eliminate the LA butt-Lickers to settle all this.

Nutmeg, chill out. The OP did ask about SF, but the bay area emerged into discussion because some people started saying socal is more superior to SF because it has Santa Monica, Malibu, OC, SD, which are not a part of the city of LA. The conflict then became socal vs norcal with norcal to include Sacramento and bay area. It got a little crazy there and now there's even a bit of Sacramento vs bay area with King fans starting to talk trash to Warrior fans. I'm still waiting for the Fresno and Merced fans to jump into this squirmish to boast about their new UC.

Woohoo! :sings: "I was working as a waitress in a cocktail bar... when I met you..." 🙂 I'm proud to say I'm not part of the Green party though.

....I picked you out, I shook you up, and turned you around...turned you into someone new

Don't you want me baby?

Sigh... 🙄

I've always thought the Kings-Warrior Rivalry brings out the worst in people.

I don't consider it a rivalry...our rivals are the Lakers and the Mavericks (who have...GONE FISHIN'!!!

The Warriors always play the Kings tough, but I have nothin' but love for our Bay Area friends. I wish they felt the same...

Ok, this thread is hilarious, so, 2 years later, i'm totally bringing it back.

The only two places I have ever lived are Los Angeles and San Diego. In terms of where I would choose to live (which is where I am living now) it is by far the obvious choice being San Diego. The San Diego vibe is much better than the LA scene. Unless you have aspirations of being a model/actor/singer or living next to 'The Game' in Compton, there is now way given the choice I would not pick San Diego. Not to say LA is bad because there is a lot to do and more diverse, its just that San Diego has better burritos, better beaches (you can drink on them), the best weather, and for the most part a friendlier vibe. The only downside I can see with San Diego is that it could be the most expensive to live out of all three (highest housing prices, highest gas prices).

In regards to San Francisco, which is probably the best "big city" of the three it is a very different culture than SoCal (people say things like "hella" and hug trees). However lots of young professionals live in SF which is cool, but then again the weather is not even close to SoCal. I think it rained like 23 days in the month of March up there.

Either way California will always be California, and people like yourself will continue to flock here for good reason. You really can't go wrong but if it were up to me San Diego is the place.

Who dug this thread up? 🙂

To answer the OP, SD and SF are the only way to go. LA Sucks - yes, capital S. SD rules, and SF is nice if you can afford to live there and are slightly more liberal than Howard Dean.

For anyone who has the luxury of choosing between these cities for med school this year (or any other year), congrats! You are a rock star in the admissions game.

Based strictly on location, I think I'd choose SF, but then again I'm a freakish liberal, followed by SD. LA is third because my two-hour daily relationship with the 10 freeway drives me friggin' nuts.

I read the whole thing, freakin hilarious. I have to vote for Socal simply due to my name even though I've never been to cali.  Bel Air represent!!

man i just have this urge to respond to every one of your posts cuz i can't get over your avatar. told my mom about it, heh. is your puppy really that small, and so freakin adorable?

anyway, why does LA suck so much? i know there's definitely a difference from the norcal feel i'm used to, but i could never put my finger on it. and, yea, you don't have to be liberal in SF, but you just have a lot more pride in it (and fun) if you are.
