Are away rotations necessary in radiology?

Classmate of mine did zero aways. Matched at Louisville. Had usmle and was DO

This couldn’t be further from the truth. Radiology programs have strict ACGME guidelines to follow (# of studies, didactics, # of faculty and subspecialties etc) you can’t have a bare bones radiology program because at the minimum there’s a decent amount of infrastructure required (3T MrI, # of CT machines, # of procedures etc). I’ve seen super shady psych programs located in the middle of nowhere (particularly Florida) with very questionable facilities and faculty. Makes you wonder how they even got accredited in the first place

Larkin cough... cough...

TBH, I can argue that some academic institutions in Florida outside of UMiami are straight up trash as well.

I wish we could have each school's match list edited onto the OP so I don't have to sift through this mentally stimulating discussion about Psych.
I edited post 1. Pretty sloppy work, but I need to study. If someone wants editing privileges to clean it up/update more than me, feel free to PM.

lol guidelines. Either way this isn't about rads. It's about psych. As in Florida it's because of their broken Baker act law. You can literally send someone into a psych ward by saying you think they're dangerous or might hurt others or themselves.

Psych has ACGME guidelines to conform to. Every specialty does.

And I know plenty of DOs with very average applications who matched Radiology in undesirable areas. One of my friends from college just matched in an undesirable area with a 540/220 and no research. He’s not even a particularly fun guy to be around.

I agree with celty - psych should be considered way more like EM or anesthesia than FM/IM. DR might be pushing it a bit due to the known high board scores. Don’t care about geography? An average DO will probably match if they apply broadly. Want Chicago, NYC, or Cali? You’d better kill your boards/ aways, you should have a good story, and research is gonna matter.

UF-Jax, USF-Morsani, FSU are all solid.

99 percent sure they are both categorical. I know UT Houston for sure. Guy is a baller. Said he missed zero on the comlex and two on usmle. Remembered all the questions. I remember when we did the practice comlex exam our school made he got a hundred on it. He probably could have went into any field tbh.
oh one of those guys

Yeah there's something about Florida. For anesthesia there's like 10 programs in Florida but the only decent ones are UMiami and UF-Gainesville.

My exp is similar for Neurology. The other places are very mediocre.

The reason I bring this up is because if there are people out there who are interested in psychiatry but are discouraged by statements like "psych is the new derm," you shouldn't be. Look at the data. Average Step 1 for psych is 226, for dermatology 249. 6.8% AOA for psych, 49% for dermatology. 15 research projects vs 5 projects. Nearly every objective measure says that psych is not as competitive as everyone is making it out to be.

This is me. I worked for a time between undergrad and medical school in direct contact mental health, and it is from those experiences that have pushed me to want to go into psych (particularly with a population oft ignored).

But like I am seeing all this about Psych becoming hyper competitive that if I don't have X research and X pubs and X school board experiences that I should've given up before I applied to medical school.

Would you say IM at UF-jax is bad too? I see a lot of DOs in their program.

Its uni affiliated program and they seem to match internally for fellowships. Sounds like a typical uni affiliated program.

Same for Rads. more than half their class is DOs and multiple DOs matching IR fellowship after per their website.

You understand most, if not all, states have similar laws on the books, right?

Don't judge the program by the number of DOs. The only red flag is if the program is comprised of ~90% IMGs bc then you know that it's the intention of the PD to have that many slave labors. Here's the thing about IMGs: their asses are the PD's. PDs can abuse them as much as possible without a single complaint from them unless these guys want to be deported back to their home countries and lose all chances of practicing medicine in the US. PDs can't do the same thing to American residents without possible repercussion.

I can't say about UF-Jax IM. But, I interviewed at UF-Jax Neurology. Man, the place is a total dump, that reeks of high volume bs and underlying abuse. I also get a lot of bad vibe coming from that place on my interview day, like unsafe medicine practice.

No one is saying that. The points we’re trying to make is that applicants need to take the competition seriously and be smart about applying and ranking. Psych isn’t like FM/community IM anymore, even though some people on SDN like to treat it that way. Psych in a random geographic location is realistic for an average DO who applies broadly, but desirable cities are gonna need some combination of scores, aways, pubs, and luck.

Yeah would really like to know the backstory to these matches as well.

I don’t know what’s more impressive...

Sure, the Derm at Penn State is amazing, but DOs have matched at ACGME university derm programs (in less desirable areas) before, albeit in very small numbers. It’s wow, but not WOW like the other two.

Ortho, at a university ACGME program, in an NYC borough? I believe that’s a first.

And IM at a towering top 10 academic medical powerhouse like Duke? Damn.

Yeah yeah Derm, Ortho, university IM, and PSYCH, but here's a shoutout to all you FM homies. Y'all matched in some cool places.

Do you know which ones? Because UT Houston and ECU-VIdant are excellent matches but only if they are categorical.

Edit: most of them are solid honestly, those are the two that just stood out to me the most

According to her Facebook, the ECU gen surg is a categorical as well.

The list that @weqwerq posted is inaccurate. Not their fault. The Duke match was for Neurology, not IM. Several other errors have been reported internally as well and they are working on correcting it.

I can confirm the Derm match at Penn State is valid, but not sure about the Ortho match at Montefiore at this time

Solid matches by OUHCOM. OhioHealth is a partner of OUHCOM and a lot of students do their rotations in OhioHealth hospitals so it helps that they had a ton of their residencies get ACGME accreditation. Same with Kettering in Dayton and the Cleveland Clinic.

Haha yeah that’s 2019 but we had decent matches.

A lot of GS
Ophthalmology but idk how good the program is.
Good neuro matches.
Good amount of psych and some good matches.
2 Urology
I think the class did well. Personally I am glad after intern year I’ll never manage diabetes again lol
I go to VCOM-Carolinas. That optho match guy spoke to us (he was in for a req OMM lab thing), anyways he matched at a very prestigous hospital in MI (where i'm from). He did all his aways there though - also did took Step during 3rd year.

Thanks for letting us know. I said that because obviously being in neuro I don’t know anything about ophthalmology and was hoping the group would comment on it as it’s not a university program and someone before mentioned to me those programs there were on probation. Hopefully not.

Looks like DOs did very well in integrated IR this year!
Considering I thought IR was basically untouchable for DOs, I was pleasantly surprised as well.

This is what I've been saying. It's like the one hyper-competitive field where there seems to be less of a bias. Great stuff.

Its Beaumont health Taylor. Just looked into it. Not ranked on USA new and world reports and was at the bottom of Doximity rankings. It also has initial accreditation with a warning per acgme. Not prestigious by any means but still a cool well deserved match for a DO

By the numbers, radiology is competitive (MD Senior: Step 1 for DR and IR are 240 and 246, respectively [1]), in-demand [2; table 5], and well compensated [2; table 9]. For whatever reason, it is not seen as prestigious [3]. To me, the last point explains the apparant lack of bias.

I was strictly referring to hyper-competitive fields, which IR obviously is. But the third article would definitely explain the lack of bias across radiology as a whole. It seems that they culturally value prestige a lot less than other fields. It's a great thing, honestly.
