Hi gang,

I am just now finding out about the world of D.O. Seems like a great fit for pretty smart people that just don't do as well as expectd on the MCAT. My current science GPA is around 3.0-3.2 Can't see it going up to 3.5 with only O. CHM II and physics II to go.I am taking my MCAT in April. Practice tests have me ranging from 26-33. We all know that some practice tests scores are not very accurate. Do you guys think I should even bother with M.D. Schools or just apply to D.O schools. (Pending my practice tests scores are valid when I test in APril). i don't know if this helps but I have like 3 years experience as a clinical laboratory technician and I have shadowed like 4 docs. I am also URM. What do you guys think?

Whats your overall GPA? If its above a 3.3, as a URM, you should be competitive for both MD and DO schools, especially with a 28-30 on the MCAT.

Well, even being URM probably can't make up for your low GPA for MD schools. As for D.O., your science GPA is not really competitive, but you will still probably get in somewhere. What is your cum GPA?

Depending on how low it is - it certainly can. 3.2 is probably enough with a 30 MCAT.

My overall GPA is a 3.4-3.5. Thanks for all your input. I will apply to my state MD schools and some lesser competitive schools along with 5-10 D.O. schools. Thanks!

OD = optometry 🙂. Make sure you apply to all your state schools, a couple reach schools and all of the schools such as Meharry, Howard, etc that were created specifically for URMs (especially for African Americans, but Hispanic/Native Americans also get a preference).

you have good numbers, actually everything you have is good, with 5-10 DO programs and a few in-staters MD schools, I would guess you have a very strong chance of being accepteted somewhere

good luck

Great. You figured out you can't get into an MD school, so now DO school is suddenly the greatest thing since sliced bread.

Realizing you can't be a doctor, then realizing you can be a doctor sounds a hell of a lot better then sliced bread to me.

EVEN if that was the case.... its not a bad thing....there are people out there who think that if one can't make it into an MD program, they shouldn't even bother with DO, they should either go to carrib or forget med school all together.... Props to those who want to become "doctors" and not care about the last 2 letters behind thier names

I agree. We need good doctors. Not potentially promising careers cut short because someone doesn't understand what a DO is.

Don't make a DO or an MD 'sound like you.' Make 'physician' sound like you. If you want to become a doctor, the letters behind your name mean absolutely nothing, focus on this goal, not others. In response to your question (as my previous remarks were pointless) yes, apply DO - it's a wonderful route!!

Ok,

You folks are going to far with the generalizations here. I do not care about the DO or MD title. However, everyone on this site claims to have a >3.7 GPA and >35 on MCAT. Regardless of the route, I will become the doctor I know I can be. The question was simply from a financial perspective. Why waste money applying to more MD schools than DO schools if I'm not competitive there. Anyways, wish me luck on my MCATs in APril and I look forward to inputting the class of 2013 acceptance thread.

From a financial perspective, the money spent applying to more MD schools to increase you chances is well-spent when considering how much less you could possibly be in debt in the long run.
