Do schools such as HMS, Stanford, etc. accept students who have research experience but not in the basic sciences? Do they still look favorably on applicants with health economics or epidemiology research experience?

Imo. N=1, but none of my research was basic science/bench research. Got into one of the top NIH funded schools, where they make you do research in order to graduate.

To the title: yes, for sure people get in with research outside of the wet lab, many people have clinical research backgrounds.

I don't know about something like "health econ research" though - what does that entail?
