A friend of mine said that some med schools know if you have been accepted Into another med school, so the other schools will reject you so that they can give the spot to somebody else who would be more likely to take it. Has anybody heard anything like this for vet schools or is it just a conspiracy theory?

I've heard of some schools over in the UK that operate in this fashion, but not any in the US. I mean, have you seen some of the kids that get on here and list all their acceptances at once? Some people literally get accepted into 10 different schools so I really can't see this happening...

I know applicants who were asked in interviews, "Have you been accepted anywhere else?"

It would behoove one to be truthful (lol).

From the vet schools' side, why would they NOT offer acceptance to a student they really really really wanted for whatever reason?

"Oh school B already said they wanted student A, so we'll play nice and let them have him/her." Hahaha, no

"More like "We want this student so we'll send an acceptance anyway. Screw school B, we know they will come here because our school is awesome-r."
That why schools over-accept and have a waitlist.

Yep. In my K-State interview I was asked the following question: "You are from Oklahoma so I assume you applied to Oklahoma State. If you are accepted to both institutions, what would you do?"

I didn't want them to not accept me for saying I would go to my IS ($15,000/yr vs $40,000+/yr) so I just said that I had really liked everything I had seen at K-State so far (the truth) and I would have to weigh the pros and cons of each school for my individual situation and base my decision on that (also the truth). I ended up being accepted to both schools.

I don't think vet schools know from a note on your VMCAS or anything where you've already been accepted, but imagine if they did. I can just see going to an interview and they ask "You've already been accepted at X and Y universities, what do you prefer about this school?" or something, and I just go 😱 "I got accepted to Y?" because I haven't got the letter yet.

👍

some schools asked on their supp. applications which other schools i applied to. does anyone know the logic behind this, if they don't look into where else an applicant has been accepted?

It can really change the tone of an interview if you say yes. It did for me at Purdue last year. I had already been accepted at Ohio and CSU before I got there and I think I got my acceptance from NC State while I was there (the husband told me on the phone). My interviewers asked me what factors I was looking at and I honestly told them "My husband needs to be able to find a job." (I did say more than that, but it was a big thing for me). Then they asked what he does (middle school English teacher) and they proceeded to talk about all the different middle schools they had and how it would be a breeze for him to find a job. It was actually kind of funny. But the minute they did that, I was pretty sure I was in there too.

That's only because over here they have a max number they can apply to.

Yup, happened to me.

Very early in the interview season, I was asked in the interview where that school ranked compared to other schools for me and how I would weigh that decision. Then the interviewers really went on to try to sell the school (even talked about the abundance of Asian groceries, which I have to admit was a huge plus 😛)

Very late in the interview season, I was asked point blank where else I'd been accepted. When I answered, it seemed like the interviewers were a little put off. It was kind of like, "oh... Congratulations I guess... Hmmm... Moving on..." I was accepted regardless, but there was weird and sort of uncomfortable energy in the room. So I guess it could go both ways...

Wow, really? I'm surprised. That sort of question should be optional at best.

I don't see how it is their business at all where else a student was accepted. That's a personal matter that should have NO bearing on how they evaluate a candidate's suitability for vet school, in my opinion.

Thanks for all of your responses guys. I think my friend was just trying to make me feel better about so many rejections. I didn't think it made sense though 🙂

Hi lfrese!

I agree with a lot of the comments that have been made, but Ive been kinda stewing about something that happened to me recently. I received a call from a school in my top 3 choices about a week ago. They called and kindly asked "I'm following up to ask you if you have been accepted to school X. And if so would you like to withdraw your application." The tone of the caller was definitely not happy after I responded--I said I had been accepted but not exactly where and I tried to emphasize my interest in her institution. Still she sounded a little annoyed I didn't withdraw my application 🙁. There was no question she was not happy.

I was disappointed and so surprised, and this event did seem to hint it was a factor in their admissions process. Sure there are hundreds of other reasons to not be a good applicant for a given school, but I'll leave my experience up for your interpretation. It just seemed odd they called specifically for only that piece of information.. 😕

That is...weird. Never heard of that happening before

That's really strange. Are you 100% sure it was someone from the school? I just don't see why a school would feel the need to ask someone about withdrawing their app.

That's really bizarre and I believe somewhat inappropriate.

That's downright sketchy.
They are not allowed to ask you if you are withdrawing your app or accepting a place elsewhere before the deadline.

Yes, the caller ID was the admissions office and after the call I thought the same thing. In the context of reviewing hundreds of applicants, a personalized call asking such a specific question was the last thing I had expected. I was pretty disappointed especially knowing how much effort i put into my application but im trying not to over think it. Again, there are lots of other reasons I might not be a good applicant for an interview invite, but can't help but think that this was a tipping point for my application. Que sera sera... 🙄

Edit: Also, I spent way too much time looking through the forums when this happened and couldn't find anything like it in the pre-vet threads. So I just wanted to share my bizarro experience.

So was lady from school x asking if you were thinking about withdrawing an app from her school (x) because you got into school y? Or was she asking if you were going to withdraw from school y?

The admission office may just be down to a handful of interview invites, and they might just be calling potential interviewees to see if they were intending to withdraw their apps from school x anyway, in which case they might as well save that interview spot for someone who wants it. It kind of sounds sketchy that they would ask if you'd gotten into a particular school, but there may not be malice so long as all they're doing is making sure you hadnt completely written off their school and was slow about sending in your withdrawal notice.

that's better than my first thought.... that a disgruntled mother broke into the admissions office and hacked the files, then proceeded to call all applicants still waiting to warn them off so that little Suzie Q would have a spot!

I like your imagination. It would make my life if you became that kind of parent and continued to post about your antics as your progeny grew

Admissions director from school X asked if I got into school Y and if I wanted to withdraw my application from her school, school X. I can understand the logic for sure--I can imagine what the adcoms are faced with each cycle--It just took me by surprise because she was so specific and I havent decided yet. Im sure youre right, Minnerbelle. Luckily I couldnt stew for too long because 2 days later I had my graduate comprehensive exam so I haven't thought about it too much since it happened. Adventures in vet school applications...!
