I am going to DO school and really want to go into Anesthesia. Any tips on which programs are DO friendly and what to do in order to give myself a great chance at getting a slot in one of these programs.

What are your experiences with DOs in MD residencies?

Thanks,

All I can say is take the USMLE.

I was kinda hoping not to have to take it. Are you a DO, or are you just making a general suggestion?

Doesnt it cost a bunch more money and doesnt it test alot of different things other than what the COMLEx does.

I'm not a do but if I were you I would search this forum for info. Most programs won't interview do's without usmle. Those with good usmle scores can be very competitive at many good programs.

I am a DO who matched gas this year. I took the USMLE and I say take it absolutely. It was the smartest decision I ever made. There are a number of programs including some very good ones such as Johns Hopkins that take either test. However, it is GREATLY to your advantage to take it. The differences in the tests have been discussed ad nauseum in other forums. Generally, the USMLE is written better and has more biochem, molecular biology, and biostats.

Whats 500 bucks compared to the 100,000 you will be in debt. It is a prerequisite as far as I am concerned.

Search for this topic in the osteo forum. You'll get to read even more of my admonishing and highly inciteful posts. 😉

I don't know if things have changed in the last year or so, but I think the COMLEX should suffice. I interviewed at several top tier programs, and matched at my top ranked pick without USMLE. None of the programs I interviewed at even mentioned it.

You are the first person I have heard about doing this in 04. I've met at least 20 DO's who matched into gas this year.

As far as "DO friendly" (I hate that term) goes its more of an issue of "strong applicant friendly." Only a few places will absolutely shun DO's. We had a guy match into U. Colorado this year for gas. They won't even let DO's rotate there without them paying $1000, something to do with accreditation. Yes, he took the USMLE.

I'm a DO and I matched into anesthesia last year. you NEED to take the USMLE. This is your life. Why wouldn't you want to set yourself in the best position possible? Wouldn't make sense otherwise.

Programs I encountered DOs at during interviews:

Penn
Beth Israel Deaconess
Montefiore

Does it make sense to take the usmle step 2 or should you only take step 1?
