Do you get insanely hungry while working at the hospital?

I'm seriously always hungry at work. I thought it would be the opposite with all the sick people and gross looking stuff and continuous coffee intake, but dang I can't control it. Please tell me I'm not the only one? I feel like a totally weird person...

I personally think it's a conspiracy to get/keep people unhealthy, guaranteeing the hospital beds will be full with heart disease, diabetes, etc. for years to come.

Oh, and to answer your question OP, yes. I get ravenous at the hospital and unless I bring something healthy from home I'm forced to eat the greasiness that is hospital cafeteria food.

Speaking of weird places to get hungry, after every anatomy lab most of us had the craziest appetite. You'd think cadavers and the smell of formaldehyde would have the opposite effect!

My community hospital had a McDonalds as the cafeteria at one point. Sad times

You guys need to eat better! A healthy breakfast right before work & a small lunch will get me through a 12hr shift no problem. One time I worked from 7-4 before eating lunch... never really noticed it since I was up and moving all the time. I think the key is really to get a good breakfast before you show up. If I skimp on breakfast, I'm feeling hunger pangs at 11 or so.

When I'm in the hospital, I usually pack a light lunch of pasta with divalo sauce (spicy tomato sauce). It keeps me going till I get home where I can cook something nice.

This made me want breakfast. Hahahaha. I've you've ever smelt the smell of tissue being cut by a bovie pen...it is distinct.

Similar situation for me. Not quite the same size (I'm 200), but between lifting and running, my body needs an obscene amount of calories just to stay upright during the day. Meals every few hours are a must.

I get a 30 minute lunch break on my 12 hour shifts and I waste half of it going to Subway so I can avoid our abysmal cafeteria. My strategy for staving off hunger:

-Eat a good breakfast
-After working 4 hours take my 10 and eat a bunch of yogurt and a Clif bar or two
-After another 4 hours go to Subway
-Resist the temptation to eat stale donuts left over from the nightshift

When my mom was a nurse in the OR, she said the doctors would talk about nothing but food when they were wrapping up a big surgery. Then they'd immediately go and start ordering food - INSANE amounts of food. She became vegetarian for like 15 years though, all that flesh... D:

This is actually a rather common reaction when scrubbed in. One surgeon I worked with said "there's nothin like the smell of bovie in the mornin" 🙂 I actually got really really really hungry in cadaver lab as well. There's something about cutting flesh that I'm convinced triggers the primal hunter instinct to think that dinners a-comin'. Anyway totally not weird in the world of medicine.

As to hungry in the hospital. When ur busier as a medstud and resident you'll think about it yes but I come to work with a bag full of snacks. I took a break while sewing up some stab wounds last night to eat some fruit snacks lol.
