I guess a lot of pre-pharmacy students works at pharmacy industry, but I'm just curious about what kind of job you guys have. (part time or full time or volunteer)

In my case, right now I'm preparing to get a pharm tech licence and after that I wanna part time job with that.:luck:

I think many prepharm students would be techs, or at least the ones that are on this board. I've been a part time tech for 6 months, and a volunteer for 3+ years.

I've been a technician for about a year now, in retail.

I have been working as a part-time tech at a chain retail pharmacy for a little over 3 years. I used to work around 20 hours a week while I was in high school, but since college I don't work except for a few days on breaks when I am home. I am working around 15 hours a week this summer.

I honestly do not know anyone who did industry (Big pharma) work as a technician. Most of the work was done by interns, working in the lab over summer break.

I work for a pretty large pharmaceutical manufacturer as an intern. I got the internship last summer and just never left because I pretty much work the hours I want and I make pretty good money for a college student. The experience is really cool and I'm sure it helped during the application process since I didn't have any retail experience on paper (shadowed some before my interviews). I also worked as a tutor and chem lab assistant during school, so I'm looking forward to working less and having more study time during pharm school this fall.

I'm an accountant. 😳

Any other oddballs out there?

PhT, about to get license, then possibly volunteering at my local nursing home for no more than ~100 hours total for application purposes.

I work 8-5PM at an agricultural lab on M-TH and 1PM-5PM on Fridays. I manage to fit volunteering into my schedule and volunteer 5:30PM to 7PM on Wednesday at the library. I also volunteer Fridays at 9AM-12PM.

I plan to add a pharmacy tech program in the summer to get license by next year. The classes goes from 6PM to 9:15PM M and W starting in July (29Wk program).

In addition, I will try to volunteer in a retail pharmacy during weekends if possible.

Do you guys think this time schedule is a killer? Anyone in the same boat as me?

I figured I do not go to school and I do not have kids so might as well have my schedule full so I will not get bored. Besides, if I have free time, I found that I often just waste my time online either watching asian dramas, playing spade, or spoil my nieces and nephews.

I work fulltime as a lead fulfillment specialist for a start-up company in South San Francisco. They are an online buyer's guide for scientists.

I've never worked in a pharmacy. I've been a part time lab tech and assistant researcher for almost 3 years now. Helps out with critical thinking and calculations. I sometimes wish I had a pharm tech position, but I honestly wouldn't change the experience of having my current job. Hopefully I can start volunteering at a compounding pharmacy soon.

Conducted research in Inorganic Chem for 3 years. Now I am a bench chemist for the QC department at Conair.

For those of you that landed a pharm tech job, how did y'all apply for the pharmacy tech job at CVS and Walgreens? Did you apply online? or use some other method?

I applied for a CVS pharm tech position online, but I don't know if those online applications are very effective due to the massive amounts of applications they receive. How long did you wait for the pharmacy to hire you? Thanks.

I have worked in Pharmaceutical Development in BigPharma for the last 3 years. Also worked as a pharmacy tech part-time while I was in college.

I'm currently unemployed. I really underestimated how hard it would be to get a summer job. I've applied at all the pharmacies within a 20 mile radius, and now I'm trying to find a job doing landscaping or lawn care. So far no one is hiring. This sucks!🙁

ok, me: another different job here:
full time architectural engineer, 8 am - 5 pm M-F
pharmacy clerk, 9 am - 1pm Saturday
Student in community college 5pm - 10pm M- Th
have a 12 month baby at home, and I am the mom.

I just feel... exhausted? looking at your schedule, but I'm very impressed. How do you manage something like this?

I was a Walgreens Pharmacy Techinican, but I recently just quit that job.
I will interview tommorrow at Target for a tech position.
If I don't like Target, mail order will be my next option.

I have worked almost three years as a pharmacy tech. in an independent retail. I have been certified for about 6-8 months. Volunteered at a compounding pharmacy. During my first two years I worked anywhere btwn. 15-25 hours a week during school and 30 in the summer. My second year of college I stayed around 15 hours a week. I will begin at Samford in August, so I don't think I will work much at all until I can get into the swing of school, studying and whatever else needs done.

The application is online. Hint: Go into the store and fill out the application because you can go ahead and fill out part two, which is just math and basic stuff. The only bad thing about CVS is that you have to fill out a different form for every single store (I think.) Have you tried applying anywhere else?

I just volunteer at an inpatient pharmacy on select saturdays Besides this, I'm just a full-time poor college student who has more holes in his wallet than bills... .... the job market here in MI is rough!

I thought I'd update this since I just got hired to do landscaping today. Not really what I wanted to spend my summer doing, but at least it's income.

I'm in car sales... so yeah you are not the only oddball out there. haha.

And OHHHHHH it's such a joyous time to be in the automotive selling business let me tell you!

:laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh::laugh:
😡

You're doing better than me 👍
To keep busy I'm taking a summer class a couple days a week and volunteer 2 days a week at a hospital for 5 hours/day.

Are you talking about walgreens? 'Cause that's not necessarily true. I filled it out at home and it said go to the store to fill out part 2. I did and the manager said that since they were not hiring I did not need to fill out part 2 of the application. I left them my contact info and he said that if they needed anyone they'd call me to fill out the rest of the application. I am certified but that's not having any effect.

got a job at a biotech company , had to quit due to time constraints (won't hire me to work for under a year)

met the the president of allergan's cosmetic products, he helped me get a temp position - again couldn't take on the job , really wish I found this opportunity when I was still in college

got my pharm tech license, the next day I was accepted off the waitlist at USC. I had planned on working at a pharmacy to gain more experience, but that turned out not being necessary.

Yes, my summer exactly. I've gone ahead and applied to all the major retail stores and pharmacies within a 15 mile radius but so far I've not received a call-back yet.

Then again, I do not have much working experience and this is not really the ideal summer for unemployed college students.

You HAVE to stop in and ask to talk to the pharmacy manager.

And then the pharmacy manager says that they are not hiring
Not much you can do after you filled out the app, talk to teh manager and give them your information.
If no one's hiring, no one's hiring

That was pretty much my experience. I talked to the pharmacy managers personally and made sure they got my resume, but everyone told me they weren't hiring at the time.

Lol okay you haters you proved my statement wasn't 100% truth. Who would have thought! 🙂 My point is you really need to talk to the manager rather than submitting your app online an expecting something to happen. I applied to about 30 pharmacies I didn't get ANY phone calls. Then I stopped in with my resume in hand and talked to the manager an basically got hired on the spot (the first pharmacy I walked in to). And of course she had no idea that I had even applied nor had she seen my application. This was when there was more demand but the point is still there. The job I got before that was at a restaurant. I called the manager and he said he'd interview me. When I got there he had no idea where my application was and had never looked at it. My point is get of your ass and take a little initiative. You aren't going to impress anyone by filling out an online application that they probably won't even see!

I don't know where you are, but in Niagara Falls there isn't much hiring going on. It's actually the other way around.
I've decided to volunteer in the meantime

yes.

Since we're on the topic of jobs, is it ethical to go for an interview with a second company after interviewing for a position at another place?

For example, the past few days I received 2 calls from 2 different companies. I passed the first interview for Company A and is scheduled for a final interview to decide if I'm hired. Today, Company B called me to schedule an interview. Is it wrong to accept it?

not at all - you've got zero obligation to Company A.

The natural medicine clinic would be fine, even if it's not directly related! I'd go for it.

Southern California is well-saturated right now, as many people (Including those on the big boy Pharmacy forums) have said. It's going to be a tough road down there.

One thing I see within your control is the studying abroad in September. This is an optional decision you're making, and if you weren't doing that, you might've gotten one or more of the jobs you were interviewed for.

Not saying you shoudn't go or what not, but you're not making it any easier for yourself.

I'd totally go study abroad. You can make up for lack of pharmacy experience with other parts of your application. I had none when I got into to school. Plus your interviews will be way more interesting when you can talk about how much you've grown because you studied in [insert country here]. I wish I had the chance to study abroad. 🙁

lol. I used to be in accounting doing accounts payable. Before I got into pharmacy field I got a two year degree in accounting. I like the medical field better.

I just finished my internship at a hospital as a pharmacy tech and passed the PTCB exam. But right now I'm still looking for work. I am also interested in doing some volunteer work at a hospital.
