Rural practice has its benefits.

Oh yeah! Maybe I can find a place in Wyoming or something to practice! I have an interest in Emergency Medicine, so I think I would probably be able to find a good job in a rural area!

Sounds a bit too Royal Painsy for me.

There are lawyers and judges who make decent to a lot of pay, but they live under their means. The same goes for doctors. I mean really, unless you have a family when are you ever going to use that space?
I don't think it's about the space itself.. it's more a feeling of satisfaction of being in and owning a big luxurious house. There's also the status among relatives/friends (possibly). I mean people don't buy mansions for the space... no one needs that much space to live a comfortable life, but they get it because they can and it provides them greater satisfaction in life.
I'm sure a 2006 civic gets you from point A to B, but the quality of the drive (overall) is much higher in an R8.

That's very true. I'm going off of what I've seen thus far. The neurologist I knew owned his own practice, but he still drove the same Q35 he has had for years.

The space comment was made because I'm a pragmatist. I've always been that way. I have a friend who is an architect who usually lives beyond his means because his family expects it and he has a slightly insatiable hunger to impress people, but as far as what I've seen of the medical professionals I've been around, the PA was the flashy one.

All you seem to care about is money, whether you are looking into med school or pharmacy school, you are looking in the completely wrong area if you are hoping to make a lot of money in either. If you're smart and good enough, go study business and get into something like IB or partner at an accounting firm or something similar if you want to live the lavish life, your attitude and desire for money will make a career in healthcare a huge disappointment to you and guarantee your failure.
1) OP's just a troll

2) Going into business and expecting to make anything more than a 5 figure income as a corportate slave is a big mistake. You might hit 100-150k/year by your mid 40s if you kiss enough a$$ and work enough soul crushing hours though.

These posts about going "into business if you want money" always tend to irritate me. The vast majority of people in business make less money than physicians do. The whole IB thing is over exaggerated in its income perks when you consider that they work surgery-residency like hours for the 150-200k range (if they even get there, which they often don't). Don't look at a tiny minority of the guys in fields like IB and assume they all rake in the big bucks.

Thing is, you need much more talent and luck and just as strong of a work ethic (as a physician) to be able to succeed in business in today's world.

Oh, and can I clarify. "Dream House" is very relative. I would dream of something like this:

Or like this:

But those are too big to be a retirement home. I want something that my wife and I can take care of without having to hire a maid or something. More realistically, it would be great to retire in a nice little luxury house like this:

Amazing-Landscape-And-Site-View-Custom-Designed-Cabin-with-Lake.jpg

So much easier to clean and maintain.

It's all based on preferences. If someone wants to get their medical degree and go straight into cosmetics so they can rake in enough $$ to buy whatever house/car they want, nothing wrong with that. I have an issue with people who love to criticize such people. As long as your quality of care is up to par, it doesn't matter what your motive is as a physician.

But yea some people don't care to spend much on certain things while many others love to do the opposite. No right or wrong.

Seems a little sketchy.... hope you plan on owning enough guns.

Hi all,

So I was recently invited over to a friends house. My friends father is a plastic surgeon who owns his own practice in a fairly large city. His wife doesn't work and they go on vacation at least 6 times a year to the nicest places. When I pulled up to my friends house, my jaw dropped. They live in a 5.5 million dollar mansion with a Ferrari in the garage and a Mercedes SLS in the driveway...

The fact that he can support this lifestyle astounds me. This got me thinking of what kinds of houses other doctors live in.

Do you guys know any doctors who live like this?
Stop trolling, rifle.

I know a neurosurgeon who secretly bailed out the Vatican bank when all the money it had invested in Lehman Brothers disappeared in '08. Literally has more money than God.
I wonder if he gets extra points to make it to heaven.

Lmao wait young people actually want to live in houses?

If you're not in a penthouse, you're doing something wrong

Brb busy active city, full of beautiful women, delicious restaurants. While most pre-meds here want to be in the countryside until they retire. No danke

What kind of surgery?
That one that operates on that one organ that pumps blood or something like that.

Here is my list from favorites to a maybe.
  1. Plastic and reconstructive surgery.
  2. Orthopedic surgery.
  3. Cardiothoracic surgery.
  4. Neurosurgery.
  5. Transplant surgery.

Did you go on Google and typed TheBuffOp's current lifestyle + gf?

Money is money. Things are things.

What's important is being able to heal an angel's broken wings.

All the rest is simply fringe.

Don't assume he can actually support it, many people live well above their means in order to keep up appearances. Regardless, you'll find super wealthy people at the top of many professional careers. It's not worth dwelling on these things when the vast majority of physicians live far below this kind of lifestyle. You want to know the kinds of houses other doctors live in?

Typical upper middle class homes. Not flashy but still better than what the vast majority of Americans have.
These are probably upper middle class homes in expensive areas in the country--like NY city, LA, Wash D.C. ect... Physicians do better than that where I live now... Proletarians own these type of houses in my city (town).

Haha, well, if anybody wants to go to the trouble of robbing me, they'll have to find my house first!
I like the way you think! And good taste, too. I wouldn't want a house too big to maintain myself, either.

What would be nice, is having enough room, maybe a basement, for something like this:
Dojo-shomen.jpg

Just enough room to practice with a few other people. My kids could be Shodan by the time they're 15. 😀

Worst plastic surgeon ever. A 7 million dollar home, 3 Ferraris, 2 Aston Martins, a helicopter, and a miniature giraffe are the bare minimum for any respectable physician.

But who wants to live in Texas?
People that want less debt from medical school and want to get a residency at TMC. I have lived in Texas since 2007 there is good things about it, but I do miss California. In California you can always drive to awesome attractions like, Disneyland, Universal Studios, Las Vegas, beaches, and skiing places. But in Texas we only got a crappy beach (Galveston), Seaworld, and Six Flags.:dead:

Does that qualify for PSLF? Because if so, I might be convinced to do FM.

Not the typical doctor. How many plastic surgeons are trained per year....100 or something?

The super rich docs don't make the majority of money from practicing, rather turning their practice money into smart investments that pay off more.

Or, like my PCP, they have money from inheritance.
