"Doctors’ spat with Atrium Health spills into rare public view"

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
In a true free market anyone off the street would be able to set up shop as a “doctor” (I.e no medical license needed) some regulations work well for us.....

You mean chiropractors?

In other news..... Charlotte has had the highest murder rate in 25 yrs. Now, if you are a GSW , go to the trauma center and survive... you are a victim of a GSW..... but if you are a GSW go to the trauma center and die you are now a murder victim. The general public won't think twice that an experienced anesthesia team makes a difference. I am sure that the change in anesthesia department over the last 18 months has nothing to do with the numbers of increased murders as Atrium will attest.... the general public has just become better aim!

While Atrium is quick to publicly state they save $20 million on the new anesthesia providers they fail to point out the increase " in contract labor" i.e. anesthesia locums? (paragraph 3) and that all operating costs increased by last paragraph..... directly from public information provider by Atrium... oh BTW offset by lower surgical volumes in one of the fastest growing cities in the country!

UComparative Statement of Operations-Actual versus Prior Year (pg.5)
Net patient revenue was $173.1 million or 4.1% above the first nine months of 2018, driven largely by planned rate increases and growth in hospital patient volumes. Atrium Health hospitals experienced growth in bedded discharges of 3.2%, along with outpatient growth in the emergency room, cardiology, radiology and Levine Cancer Institute. This growth was offset somewhat by lower total surgical volumes and lower Medical Group patient visits than the prior year. Patient revenue growth was augmented by new assigned professional services revenues ($20 million) associated with the transition to a new anesthesia services provider, which was effective July 1, 2018. Increases in patient revenue were offset somewhat by a decline in the commercial payer mix, as growth in Medicare and uninsured revenues continue to outpace absolute growth in commercial revenues.

Other operating revenue was $54.3 million or 12.0% above the first nine months of 2018, due primarily to the growth in retail sales of specialty pharmaceuticals ($38 million) and the recognition of $15 million of shared savings as a result of achieving cost and quality of care metrics in accordance with 2018 managed care contracts.

Total personnel costs increased $97.0 million or 3.7%. Salaries growth was a result of market and performance-based salary adjustments and increases in contract labor. Total benefits cost remained consistent with the prior year, as non-provider FTE’s for both periods were essentially the same.

Supplies expense was $95.2 million or 11.8% above the prior year due to increased pharmaceutical costs ($68 million), primarily in retail specialty pharmaceuticals ($34 million) and hospital and Medical Group infusion and oncology drugs, due to volume growth. The remaining increases were related to patient volume growth and inflationary increases.

All other operating expenses combined grew by $18.4 million or 2.0% driven by $25.2 million in purchased services resulting from the transition to new anesthesia services and clinical engineering services providers in July 2018.

Atrium and Wake are merging now to form a 42 hospital mega system. This is bad for the community and bad for doctors.

The mergers continue after a brief hiatus.
