today I went to another DO, i asked her a letter upfront, and she told me to write it myself and she will just sign it. does anybody have a sample LOR from a doctor? i have no clue what to put in it.

also, is it expected to lie a little bit? since i shadowed her for one day, can i say i shadowed a few times and yadi yadi yada...?

thanks yall

I was asked if I wanted to write my letter and I said no. I'm not sure what to write but it is definitely not expected that you lie.

so should i write that the doctor met me twice for 5 hours total and doesnt know me well at all?

Just write that you were impressed with her Ninja doctoring skillz and wanted to go to a skool that you could learn said ninja techniques to become the best doctor you can be.

You don't have to lie but you can choose your words wisely.

In your case, I would say, "jpc984 has shadowed me on two occasions where he ..."

i think she does want me to make **** up in my letter, otherwise why would she tell me to write one

if you dont feel comfortable making stuff up then don't include it. Just say "While shadowing me in my clinic, John has demonstrated a sincere desire to learn osteopathic medicine." Then say something about how you ask insightful questions, say that you sought her out to shadow, you do this at school, you were here, you volunteer at this place, etc. Might seem generic but gives you some ideas on what to write.

Just try to be as honest and objective as possible while playing to your strong points. You don't have to lie, but if you want you can embelish a little bit. If I had to write my own LOR I would certainly do the best I could to portray myself in an attractive light. And, regardless of whether there was some embelishing invloved, I would still let my recommender review what I had written before he or she signs it. That way, If the recommender feels like I had taken it too far or was overly complimentary, then I could edit and tweak it.

Tell them what a badass you are and that you have incredible healing powers - you cure anything that you touch. That will surely impress them.

HAHAHHAHA
this is by far the ultimate answer.
you should definitely say it.
Good luck, i would hate to have to write my own letter.

Dear Admissions Committee,

I am writing this to give my endorsement of thethethe, as he applies to medical school. This is because he ****ing rules. He gets mad tail, and can drink more jagerbombs than anyone I know. This one time, he got totally stoned before he came in to shadow me, and you couldn't even tell. That's how smart he is. He's got skillz with a z. U heard it here first, bitches. Don't **** up and reject him or u r gay.

Peace.

So-and-so, D.O.

thethethe, I think it is a good thing she asked you to write the LOR. When you want to get your application in early depending on someone else can put you behind. My DO gladly aggreed to write my letter, yet I had to remind him numerous times before he actually did it. Writing your own letter means you get things done on your schedule. As to what to write, I suggest you look at a DO evaluation form some schools provide. You can use it as a general guide as to what the schools are looking for. Here is one for OSU-COM... http://www.healthsciences.okstate.edu/student/forms/supp_do.pdf . Finally, be honest in your letter.
