Does anyone else think minus grades are STUPID

We got the minus grades system implemented this past semester at our college. I just feel that it's being used incorrectly. In one of my classes an 90-94 was an A-... I thought A-/B- were supposed to help you. For example an 88 could be an A-, not a 94! =(
This semester screwed up my GPA sadly....

plus minus system is bull****, if I have a 92% and the kid beside me has a 93%, he isn't smarter than me yet he's transcript A and mine will have an -A.....10 point scale is much more relevant IMHO.

Good thing the minus doesn't really matter that much anyway...

Not to try to undermine you or one-up you or anything, but... Instead of a percentage point, try seven points. I love numbers and calculations (seriously), so sometimes I like to run numbers to see how close my grades were... In my computer science class, I was seven points from the next grade up, so I figured I would ask my professor if he would be able to give back some points that I previously felt were incorrectly taken away. He said he would, but then when I brought the two assignments to him, he said he wouldn't... I was pissed at him, not because I couldn't get the grade, but because he was such a jerk about it... Especially when he was wrong, haha...

It's been amazing to see some of the grading mistakes I've encountered... For one class, I got a full letter grade less than what I had expected (at least 10% less than I thought), so I talked to the professor about it. I found out later that he had lost half of two of my tests! Haha...

True story:

In undergrad, I took a pharmacology class and walked into the final with a high A. I studied hard and knew my crap, and I needed an 80ish to keep my A and a 70ish to get an A-. In the middle of the final, I needed to go to the bathroom really really really badly.

I went up to the prof and quickly explained my situation but before I could let him answer, I ran out the door and had explosive poo in the bathroom. Took 20 minutes out of my 2 hour final.

I ran out of time and got a 75% on my final and got an A- in the class. I was pissed off for about 30 seconds until I remembered that I'm not a douchebag who complains about getting a friggin A-.

 Sorry for laughing... But thanks for the story, haha.

I don't think minus system will matter since the GPA is calculated upon the grade and not its sign .. so you can always think that it's stupid .. but relax .. it doesn't even matter ..

Are you serious? The purpose of grading is to stratify students by performance and to provide information to all interested parties (the student, grader, and anyone in the next rung of the academic or professional ladder who wants some objective measurement of performance).

More grading intervals = more information, which serves the ultimate purpose of grading in the first place. People complain about the classic H/P/F system at many medical schools for exactly this reason - if 90% is an H and 70% is a P, someone with an 89% gets short-changed precisely because the rubric isn't informative enough. Would you rather have an H- (or High Pass, or A-/B+, or whatever nomenclature you prefer) there or the P?
