Does anyone have anecdotal evidence of AP English credit not being counted as an English pre-req?

On my official transcript, I have two entries for AP English totaling 6 credits. They are clearly listed as English classes and my school accepted them to place me out of freshman English, etc. I saw these entries on my "official transcript issued to student", but I'm assuming that's the same as a real one that my school would mail out.
So, has anyone run into a problem with a situation like mine where a school did not count these as English pre-reqs? I still have time to take 6 credits of English before matriculation, but it would be a squeeze. I know sometimes people have transcripts that just say "Transfer credit-- 12 credits" or something and run into problems, but mine does not say that as far as I know.
All my other prereqs were taken at my university and I have also taken a few other non-science classes that involved writing if that matters.

Thanks for any input!

I applied to many east coast schools and didn't have this issue, but I did have an issue with schools knowing I actually had the AP credit. I had to send official AP scores to one school, and for the rest I had my registrar type up a letter saying I received credit for them since schools never see your official transcript, and aadsas doesn't have a way of notating specific AP class credit.

This was Meharry's response to me regarding 2 AP English credits.

Thanks everyone! I knew most schools didn't really like people using AP science credits, but my adviser always told me using them for English would be fine...:dead:

I'm applying to mostly east coast schools so hopefully I'll be ok. Maybe I'll email all of them. Should be fun haha. I think aadsas did have a way to note that it was an AP class and I noted it. I guess I'll see what happens when my transcript gets verified. Hopefully at least one of my writing-intensive classes can count and I could just take one more English class.

Yeah, they can note that it was an AP class just not for specific subjects, or at least that's what they told me last year. You could email them - I started doing that once I realized it was an issue with multiple schools. I also picked like 5 writing intensive classes that I thought could suffice and I noted and explained those in my emails, along with a link showing which AP classes counted toward certain college credits. Hope it goes ok for you, I had a little panic attack when it happened, haha.

Haha thanks for your advice! I guess I know what my plans are for tomorrow now. I'm just kind of mad at my adviser, and also kind of at myself for making an effort in high school English haha

I was under the impression that if it counted for an english course at your undergrad, then any dental school that takes AP credits would be fine with that. You might have to notify them separately if it doesn't show on AADSAS but they should take it, especially for english and not a science.

If you don't mind me jumping on your thread with a similar question...my official transcript just says "ADVANCED PLACEMENT - 60 units" and then above that "Entry Level Writing: satisfied." By getting a 5 on the AP lit exam I received 8 units of english and satisfied the entry english writing course but it only shows that I received those 8 units specifically on my unofficial transcript. Which is ****ing stupid, right? I mean how does the official one just say 60 units without being more specific -_- I can easily take another english class at a CC before matriculation but i'd really rather not have to stick around for 4 months just for that. Any advice?

edit: for comparison, my unofficial student copy says "ENGCOMP 3 ---- ENGL COMP-RHET&LANG ----- 8.0"

This happened to me for Maryland. They emailed me saying my application was on hold until I clarified the situation for them, which I of course did immediately. The problem is that they were so slow to responding and explicitly told me not to call about updating them since they were busy. I sent three emails explaining the credit I received until they finally emailed back three weeks later confirming. It is a hassle since it took so long for them to verify my explanation.

So... it was annoying but it ended up being ok? That's good to know!

Well not really because I haven't received a supplemental yet. Hopefully I get one but the fact that others have already means I'm behind in the timeline of consideration, which may affect my chances.

Gotcha. The AADSAS book says it's up to the discretion of the adcom, so I'll hope for the best. As for you, I don't think you're behind. I'm still waiting for my GPA to be verified, and many people (most not on SDN) haven't even submitted yet 🙂

CAn you ask your school how it shows up on your official transcript so you aren't stressing over this?

I should have done that, but when I submitted my classes I did it the way it said on my transcript which listed my courses as their equivalent at my college so it should have shown up as an actual class not just an unknown AP credit.

I'm pretty sure I know how it shows up. It's there, but it's noted as a transfer credit and not included in GPA. My question was about if schools are not ok if you use AP English as your English pre-req without taking upper level English department courses. It seemed like some would be more lenient with this pre-req than with the science ones.

Why would your app be on hold over a prereq? Plenty of people apply without having completed even some basic science courses, especially if they're only 3rd years at the time and I've never heard of a prereq causing this kind of hold up. Maybe if you're missing a ton, but with just a few don't they assume you'll finish before matriculation...?

Yeah thats what I was surprised about. Maybe it is because I am a non-trad. I graduated in 2013 so they probably weren't sure if I was going to consider taking courses. Either way it would have been nice to still consider me and then notify me that they wanted further clarification over the situation.

They probably go off the classes you list you will take in future semesters.
