I have a 3.21 GPA which isn't anything to brag about but I am enjoying my college experience. I work, volunteer, and am in a sorority but I don't know that I would trade a better GPA for not having a social life. I am just wondering if anyone feels as though this pressure to get in to graduate school and get amazing grades has compromised their sanity, or made college life less glorious? I am also definitely not saying that anyone who is not in a sorority does not have a social life. Thoughts?

When it really boils down to it you have to do what it takes to get what you want. If you want to go to grad school you must get the grades. But if you want to be a social butterfly- understand that your gpa will not be the best it can be.
Just try to work on time management, it is definitely possible to pull off a stellar gpa and be a social butterfly. Not to sound harsh, but true friends will be there when you finish, you dont want to sit there at the end of the road wishing you studied just a little bit harder and forgoed just a little bit of activities.

best of luck

🙄Fun??? What is this word...fun??? What does it mean???

Time management is where it's at. Undergrad I went out 3-5 nights a week. You can def have a social life and a grad school worthy GPA.

Gatoraid helps too 😉

Also, the specific undergrad school you attend has a considerable impact on your ability to obtain "stellar" grades while still retaining the capacity to have a social life.

You seem like you are looking for someone to justify a mediocre GPA. It is very definitely possible to have a wonderful social life and make great grades. Sorry.

You can absolutely have a great social life and still reach your academic/career goals. The key is balance.

I thoroughly enjoyed my undergrad experience. I ended up with a decent enough GPA (3.4), and got into an optometry program that I'm thrilled with.
Did I miss out on some social events/relaxation time/sleep because I had to study? Sure.
Did I not do as well as I possibly could have because I was having too much fun? Definitely.
Do I regret either one? No way.
Is it worth it to make yourself miserable by depriving yourself of any social life so that you can get a 4.0 (considering that people get into optometry school with much less than a 4.0)? I don't think so, and clearly you don't either.

As a disclaimer, during undergrad, keep your eyes on the prize. Have your fun, but don't let it get in the way of your goals.

I have a 3.96 and I feel as though I had a fun undergraduate experience. Studying for tests never really consumed too much time, the only thing I hated were papers from elective classes outside my major. I definitely had enough free time to do things that I enjoyed.

My road to Optometry: I partied, and traveled, had 3.2 GPA, got married, went back to college and got 4.0 before getting into optometry school. It's not black and white when it comes to GPA and "having a life".

The main reason I switched from pre-med to pre-opt is so i COULD have a social life! 😀
