I am in dire need of some interview days that I am currently on waitlists for. I thought maybe we could use this thread to "switch" days with each other in hopes of expediting the waitlist process...

Does anyone want to switch days for:

Iowa: I am scheduled for December 14th, but I need December 10th
Wisconsin: sceduled for December 14th, but I need January 7th

PLEASE HELP! I am couples matching and these are a some of the few schools we both have interviews at. Somehow I need to go to both, but have them scheduled on the same day!

I guess I don't quite understand. To me, it doesn't seem to make much sense to "switch" with someone because then what would the point of a waitlist be? I would think that you probably couldn't cancel an interview and say, "I want this person to take my spot because I switched with them." Because when someone cancels or changes dates, then the next person on the waitlist should get that spot. Maybe I don't understand what you're suggesting, but I don't think it can work that way.

If both would contact the PD and say they wanted to switch dates it would work. Someone on the waiting list is less desirable to the program than someone who already has been invited for an interview.

but isn't the waiting list an invitation to interview?

No .. I think a WL just means they call you if someone cancels.....thats my understanding of it anyways. I know people in my class who have switched interview dates by calling programs and it worked. So my understanding is yeah .. programs will let two people swap dates.

Nope it just means "if the person we really wanted drops out we will send you an invite because we want to make sure we interview enough people"

that's not entirely true. Many people on waitlists are people who have already been invited to interview but need/want to change interview dates. For example, I have a number of interviews already scheduled at programs, but at those same programs I'm on the waitlist for alternate dates if they become available. But I won't give up my already scheduled date unless I get a spot on another day. At some of the programs I have even been told where I am on the waitlist, 2nd, 3rd, etc, which I why I was confused about the question because I was assuming the waitlist was in order of first come first serve.

I second what MDLove said. I'm on several waitlists after having to withdraw from scheduled dates due to scheduling conflicts. There was no human way for me to make a certain date, but I like the school enough that I will still interview on another day should a spot become available.

And sometimes the waitlisted people are just the unlucky ones who didn't reply fast enough to an invite to get a date- that's happened at some programs this year that didn't anticipate the amount of interest they actually got.
