I meet with a gastroenterologist at his office once or twice a week to discuss/work on clinical research projects. Additionally, we often talk about his field and he has often taken me to his weekly GI meetings and clinical talks. Overall, we've published around 8 papers together including those in major journals like The Lancet. In general, he knows me very well and will definitely write a solid LOR.

I feel that by talking and working with him on research projects along with attending weekly clinical meetings has allowed me to better understand and appreciate the field of GI. However, I have never followed him around to see patients. Therefore, did what I just describe constitute as shadowing? Thank you.

No, it doesn't. The purpose of shadowing is to follow him around seeing patients and observing various parts of his job so you know whether the reality of his day-to-day is something you want to do for the next few decades.

Thank you. My logic was that clinical research is a key aspect of his day to day job along with attending these GI meetings. However, I understand what you mean. Thanks!
