Does your Dean exclude those occasional (out of no where) bad eval comments?

In your Dean's letter, does your Dean exclude those occasional bad eval comments?

I was just going over those "compiled" eval comments from my clerkship directors and the OB director actually did include the comments from this one resident.... (never got a chance to look at them because the school never told us that they are available for viewing......)

Well, Ob is one of the first rotation I did back in April. One of the resident wrote me a rather negative feedback and has basically tainted my otherwise fine evals.... During the first week I was at OB, I basically got 3hrs of sleep a night with no sleep on the first day because 1) my overnight week was immediately followed by our 8hr orientation (a lots of didactics) and 2) we have mandatory didactics every afternoon throughout that week ... imagine getting off at 11am after scrubbing in that C-section or ectopic (we had a back-to-back ectopic one night) and getting back to the hospital at 4pm for didactics for 5 days in a row....
Anyhow, by the end of the week, I was a zombie. I couldn't tell A from B and this one resident actually wrote that about me. Well, the clerkship director did comment on the fact that I made significant improvement over the weeks (well... because the rest of the residents gave me excellent feedbacks and I know that the director is being nice not to screw me over...) but it still mentions about my extreme lack of knowledge in the beginning....

The clerkship directors' evals from the other rotations (IM, Surg, Peds, FM, etc) were spotless but this one just sticks out.... You know what I'm saying?

I am actually quite bummed out because I might decide to go into Ob (either Ob and Em now)....

At the school I went to, they told us that if there was an outlier on evaluations, they typically would disregard that outlier in the Dean's Letter.
 
To answer your question...HECK YEAH! At my school, the clerkship director compiles a paragraph for the MSPE. It is based on all our evals from that rotation. They take only the good stuff for that paragraph. Anything negative or suggestions for improvement are for our viewing pleasures only. I <3 my school. 😀

the dean at my med school will throw out up to two bad evals.

Look I'm not trying to be an *******, but the Northeastern States of the world are exactly why med students have been forced to study their asses off for a pass/fail exam (Step I). Evals are worthless enough already as these little subjective snapshots, and schools absolutely should remove the odd outlier comment from the grumpy post-call resident. But removing everything negative is an absolute farce. It might seem great for you now, but if I knew this information as a PD it would cause me to seriously question your institution's academic integrity and the validity of your entire residency application.

Fair enough. However in my school's defense, I think I may have made too much of an extreme implication. Furthermore, perhaps I was too quick to generalize to the entire student body. The idea is that the faculty tries to put us in a more positive light. If a student received stellar comments, it is easy to do so. They get rid of the mandatory BS suggestions for improvement comments like "keep reading," or "continue to work on presentations and write ups." I'm sure if a student gets comments like "lazy, useless, stupid" or anything of that nature, the director will find a less insulting adjective for the dean's letter; something that sounds a lot more constructive. So in response to your comment, I can only conclude that my last post applies to me and as for my colleagues, it'd be rude to ask. (Before you react, I can honestly say, in fear of sounding like a bragging dickhead, that I had at most one rare outlier comment in each rotation. The overwhelming majority were extremely positive). But given the caliber of students my school accepts, I have no doubt that these comments are in some way useless as they will all be excellent physicians. Unfortunately, that is only my insignificant opinion. And I still <3 my school.

As for your "northeastern states" part, I assume you are referring to grade inflation? Where have you heard this from? Does this apply to all northeastern medical schools? There appears to be some underlying animosity and I would just like to clarify.
 
The only way to know is to ask your dean.

At my school they include everything. When evals are done their is a section or deans letter stuff and a separate sexton do "keep reading" crap. You have 30 days from the end of you rotation to fight any negative comments and get them change by the clerkship director. After that they are set in stone. They are copied word for word (even typos 🙁 into our deans letter.

As you can see there is a huge spectrum of what schools do. You need to ask yours asap.
