I'm a non-degree post-bacc student at a CUNY school, and I'm really interested in doing research with a professor at NYU-Poly. I'm just wondering if anyone knows whether professors care whether someone interested in doing research with them is a student at their school.

Thanks for the help!

It's definitely harder to get a research position at a school that is not your own, but it's not impossible. I am an undergraduate at a small liberal arts college and just completed a summer research position at a large university. I got the position simply by e-mailing the PI saying I was interested in the work and was looking for a summer position and sent my CV with the e-mail. The fact that it was a summer position might have made it a little easier in my case but it's worth a shot.

i don't think it matters at all, especially if you're doing a post-bacc. i did my undergraduate in Boston, essentially one big college town. if anything, it's only easier because students are more aware of positions within their own school, but if you spend the time to look, there are people looking to train younger generations everywhere. i actually only did one research stint at my alma mater. my other positions were at HMS.

i think the post above mine goes to show that people don't care if you're from their school or not.
