hey:

I was at an interview yesterday where someone said "I've got interview X on Monday, but I think I'm gonna cancel it."

I didn't say anything, but I was thinking 'what a jerk! give other people a chance to interview if you don't want to go'

you really ought to give at least 1 week's notice out of respect to other applicants not to mention the program and whatever administrative work they have to do.

agreed...well said.

That is all well and good, but in the unperfect world we live in, you cannot always predict how far in advance you will change your mind about an interview. My PD will tell you that he would appreciate someone cancelling anytime over showing up disinterested. You learn new things about other programs on the interview trail just talking with other applicants and other programs. I agree that notice is the obvious correct thing to give, but you can't always do it that way. Last year I ended up loving a particular program (my home program now) and I decided to stay an extra night to attend the applicant dinner for which they only held one night between interview days. I could never have predicted I would like Iowa so much that I would be willing to cancel and interview the next day at a nearby program. But it was worth it and I would do it again. Is it ideal? Of course not.
