I'm asking on behalf of my cousin, who's a pre-med and plans on entering DO school after a gap year beginning this May.

What's the deal with getting into MD residencies? He wants to do orthopedic surgery, and he is really intelligent for it and I'm sure he's gonna work hard and everything, but he doesn't want to do a DO orthopedic residency because they're all too far away from where he lives (and he doesn't want to move too far away from his family).

Is it unheard of for a DO to get into this kind of residency? Or if not, how can he get into one?

Regardless of your degree, it is very difficult to match orthopedic surgery, but even more so as a DO. Since the residency merger there are no longer separate AOA and ACGME residencies, but I can imagine the former ACGME residencies will still be harder to match into (which is where your cousin wants to go). So basically, possible? Yes. Difficult? Very. In terms of how, they need to absolutely demolish the boards (250-260 USMLE/670+ COMLEX) and impress the pants off of PDs at their audition rotations.

Yes. At least ACGME. Only 6 DO's in the entire country. ACGME Anesthesiology? Yo, Its a disproportionate number of DO's in ACGME programs.

Poor cousin, I'm sure he'll feel lonely. He can always request any teaching hospital to open a residency close by and ad-hoc to his needs.

There's a merger of the two and I believe all residencies will become ACGME certified.

Now I don't have much knowledge of the match, but for something like ortho, your cousin is going to have to have the stats (mostly board scores) to even think about landing a position in Ortho, let alone even get to decide where. ACGME ortho is difficult to match into as a DO and limiting the programs you will go to based on location isn't wise at all and can lead him to not match (these are all silly things to consider for any of us since we're not even first years). If he's that adamant about Ortho, then look up each program in the area and see which ones have any DO's in them, most likely will have none or just one.

However, your cousin could look into IM/FM/Psych/Peds, which is open to DOs and all you need is average USMLE board scores. I'm sure there will be programs that will allow him to stay by family.

0 to 6 DOs match acgme orthopedics each year. It's uncommon.

No, it's not. Do some google searching on match lists for the DO schools. BTW, I have a good friend at TUCOM-CA crowing, just crowing how one of their students was the only DO grad in the country to match into an allo ENT residency. ENT! My students match nicely, but needless to say, I was duly impressed.

Yeah sorry to burst you and your friend's bubble, Goro - but I'm pretty sure there haven't been any allo ENT matches at TUCOM-CA in the last six years. Osteo ENT yes (this year and in 2009), but no allo.

OP, any particular reason your friend is considering osteopathic medical school and not an osteopathic orthopedic residency? Seems pretty silly unless he knows exactly what fellowship he wants to do...?

. That will take him down a notch (my crowing friend, not the TUCOM grad)!

Your cousin is going to have a rude awakening about matching into residency if he doesn't plan to move. Most med students move to go to residency. To cut your sight's short on that matter is just naive and they likely will end up NOT MATCHING. Bad play.
