Drexel Med Class of 2011

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I am doing PIL as well. I believe that I read somewhere that our orientation starts Aug 1st and everyone else's starts on the 3rd. And I believe the White Coat Ceremony is on the 6th.

Yes, it looks like they sent out another e-mail today. Thanks for the information though!

Hey guys,

Congrats on Drexel! Welcome!

I'm a soon-to-be second year... I have a room for rent in my house. Right now it's sort of furnished - bed, bedside table, lamp, bureau. The house is completely furnished. All of the furniture in the room can be removed, though. The total rent incl. utilities is $650. Covers things like cable, wireless, and then the basics like electricity so we can use both the cable and wireless.

Anyway, if you are looking for a place to live next year and don't want to bring an apartment's worth of stuff, this is a great spot! We're close enough to walk to campus, or drive without feeling too guilty, and we're very close to the restaurants and bars of East Falls. Also a block up from the river, so great for decompressing and such!

You can contact me at [email protected] if you're interested or want to know more info.

hey guys,

i was just reading a bit of your posts, came upon one on the previous page about east falls and it being a crappy place to live and to go to manayunk or center city.

in a couple ways that person is right. in a couple ways he isn't. here is my 2 cents:

1) east falls is quiet, kinda sleepy. some huge beautiful homes, right by the river, no big distractions, right by school. There aren't too many restaurants around, but it takes 10 minutes to drive to Germantown, Manayunk, Bala Cynwyd, and 20 minutes to downtown. it's also 20 minutes by train to downtown for $3. However, there are 5 restaurants/bars that serve food on the hill, and none of them are bad. Obviously if you're an eater-outer, they can get old if they are the only places you go, but that's what you got. We have a coffeeshop with internet, and we're 20 minutes from Mt.Airy and Chestunt Hill and their eclectic coffeehouses and restauratnts.

2) Manayunk is supposedly this great fun town. Sorry, I have been there a ton of times and I still don't see it. Perhaps I'm old and cranky, but whatever. There are some good music places, bars, restaurants, coffeeshops, etc. It's wanna-be trendy, and the masses make it so. However, to live in manayunk i've heard is not so great. Parking is always a problem, noise at all hours, especially after 2am when drunks like to smash things about, and apartments are small. Some i've heard are bigger, but on the average they're small. You have to drive to school. Yay global warming!

3) I wanted to move to center city this year, but it's just too expensive to live how i want to and have the space I have now. Everyone i know who lives downtown loves it. There is a shuttle that drives between the hospital and school every half hour, for free, so you can always get there and back that way.

4) do not live on the 'other' side of Wissahickon. stay on the school side, unless you live in one of the complexes that are ON the street. it's shady.

5) there are a lot of people who rent out rooms (like me) and apartments in these huge houses that are either a whole house w/ rooms or turned into apartments (each floor, say) and these places are great. check on craigslist and on the welcome student website.

6) east falls is just convenient to everything and a good quiet non-distracting environment. my gripe is that there isn't a good grocery store that is nearby. you have to make a trip or have them deliver. but, that's about it.

7) crime is up in east falls from previous years. however, crime is up in philly city-wide. we just broke 150 homicides. make sure you get escorts home (yes, even you, guys) or to your car, and it is good to get a place with a security system. don't be stupid, like i was, and leave your laptop sitting in perfect view of a window, or someone will smash the window and take it. do not leave $2 on the center console of your car, or someone will smash your window and take it. just be smart about yourself and your stuff.

ok that's it.
good luck deciding where to live :)

Hi future classmates! I was wondering if anyone is considering a long distance commute to Drexel.

I live in Maryland, and found out that Amtrak takes an hour and 15 minutes from Baltimore to Philly...in all, the trip might take 2 hours including getting to the station and the shuttle ride to Queen Lane. The big advantage would be being able to live with my family, but I'm not sure about the practicality...and the cost is $944 for a monthly ticket (unlimited rides).

Does anyone currently have a commute like this, or is considering it?

Hi JBoz-
I'm in Pgh too and headed for Drexel. Let me know if you want to meet sometime.
Katie

hey all

i was accepted to drexel!! i'm on one waiting list so unless i get pulled from there i'll be joining you lovely people in philly next year. right now i'm on the other side of the state in pittsburgh. philly seems like a great place, though i haven't really spent much time there. i'm really excited for the pil program!! and to start med school in general!!

I would strongly advise against doing that since DUCOM MS-1's have a TON of tests, quizzes, conferences, gross/micro/neuro labs, and patient and physician meetings every day. Things like these get started as early as 8 AM and people usually get there 1 or 2 hours beforehand to study for tests and such. You have plenty of time until orientation starts, so you should be able to find better accomodations easily in the meantime. Good luck.

Thanks Jamen for the feedback - the more I think about the logistics of taking Amtrak, the more impractical it seems. Would you say on Fridays, classes typically end by about 3 or 4pm? I was looking at the Year 1 calendar and it seems the schedule varies day by day depending on exams, quizzes, etc. Appreciate your help!

Hi all. I was wondering if anyone could give me some info on the Summit Park Apartments in Roxborough. I've heard mixed reviews so far. The rent is fairly cheap but I hear that there are noise problems and maybe even some violence (a woman was raped there in sept. 2006). But how do these apartments compare with those around the drexelmed campus?

Also, I don't have a vehicle although my roommate would likely have one. If anyone knows about the busses from Roxborough/Manayunk to the drexel area, will you please fill me in. Is it safe to wait at the bus stops at night, near queen ln and henry ave? Are there special bus passes that drexel students can purchase?

thanks for the info

I've talked with someone (who attends PCOM) who lives in Summit Park, and he seemed to like his apartment, the condition of the building and the inside of his unit, etc. Also he liked that the apartment complex is across the street from a shopping center that includes a grocery store, a couple of banks, Staples, and some restaurants. That said, it takes me less than 10 minutes (no joke) to drive from where I live--a block off campus--to that shopping center. I avoid the 5:00 traffic, when it might take a bit longer, but any other time of day, it's less than 10 minutes. I personally wouldn't want to wait at the bus stop if it's late at night (not to mention it's cold in the winter!!), so if you really want to live there, I'd suggest getting a car. If you want to minimize your contribution to global warming by not driving, consider living near campus if you don't feel safe walking around here at night. The security guards do have an escort service for some distance between Wissahickon (the street that intersects Queen Lane to the east of campus) and quite a few blocks to the west of campus. But you need a car for third-year rotations so think about when you want to get one. I don't know whether Drexel sells discounted bus passes.

Thanks for the info Sierra.

Another question on a different topic. Do all first year students have labs and small group meetings at the same time? Looking at the online course schedules it shows specific times... it might say 12-1pm for a gross anatomy lab, for example. So all students do that gross lab from 12-1pm? Or are students split into groups, each group with a separate time? Hopefully this makes sense. thanks

anybody in here get in off of the waitlist by any chance???

Well I did PIL so I don't know about the small group meetings, but the anatomy lab can accommodate all of IFM. I don't know if everyone shows up but lots of people do. The deal with the anatomy labs on the schedule is when all the Anatomy department faculty are available to explain to you what the heck you're looking at, to help translate the two-dimensional diagrams in your atlas into 3-D. You can work in the anatomy lab pretty much anytime you want, though.

Sorry! I also have another question for anyone who may know. Is there anyone currently living outside of philadelphia county, for instance on the main line/villanova area? I have found alot of properties for rent in this area, and was wondering if anyone had any advice on whether this was a good location, especially in regards to how long it would take commuting on the train? On google it says its about 8 miles, but I figured someone with experience might have some good input!

What train would you be catching? The problem with queen lane and SEPTA is that all of the regional rail trains except the R8 have to go through center city first, such is the case with the Main Line area. Your best bet would be Chestnut Hill West which is the last stop on the R8 line. It is a pretty "high income" area so I dont know what apartment rates would be out there but it may be worth checking out: http://www.chestnuthillpa.com . You may also want to look at the SEPTA website about transportation issues: http://www.septa.org/maps/click_map.html

Hey guys,

another housing question: are most of you looking for apartments first and then finding roommates, or the other way around? I am going to start looking for housing in June, and was wondering whether to get a 2 bedroom or a studio. I would like to have a roommate, but I dont want to be stuck with a 2 bedroom in case I can't find a roommate. Any help/suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks a lot!

I am wondering the same thing. Also, aside from the list that the admissions office is putting together, does anyone have suggestions on how to find roommates?

Hey everybody... longtime stalker, first time poster here. I'm looking forward to meeting you all in August. Lots to do between now and then...namely finding a place, as I'm sure is the pressure on many people. Any hints or tips, as I am going to be traveling up until about a week before orientation and would prefer a place west of campus though within walking distance (from what I hear that's a decent area and I am undecided on the car situation)... Thinking I would like a roommate. Any ideas??

So for the first half of the Anatomy block, PIL has the lab to themselves because IFM does not start right away. It's nice, because you might be able to move some of the unoccupied tables around and have more room for your group. For my year, there were two faculty who helped out for each session; sometimes there would be a fourth-year student or two in the lab whom you could ask questions of, as well. The labs never overlapped with IFM, and I suppose that's done on purpose. Everything is really fast-paced because you go through all of anatomy in about 12 weeks (I think), so you're going to end up spending a lot of time outside of scheduled labs doing dissections and learning everything. I'm a visual learner, so I enjoyed the experience.

Thanks for the information. I'm very happy to hear that the sessions don't overlap, I could only imagine how crowded it would be.

is anyone with a care planning to live in the manayunk area? i am going to live alone but i'd like to be around other classmates.

also, i'm going to philly to apartment hunt the 7th and 8th of june. anyone interested in meeting up?

I am also looking at the Manayunk area. I am already in Philly and have been looking for a 1BR for quite some time... it's not easy to come across. I need an off-street parking spot, and thats part of the reason.

Hi Everyone.
Trying to figure out how long my lease needs to be for the philly area. Does anyone know what type of presence is required at drexel during the third and fourth years if rotations are taken in another city?

why not lease one year at a time?
on another note, do some people wait until orientation week to find housing? im hoping i can find someone looking for a roommate in a 2+2 around then...

Myself and other med student at Drexel have a 3rd room available in a 3BR/2BA house close to Main Street in Manayunk. If you are interested, message me.

So any interesting conversations with the 2nd year students (as they were supposed to call 6/4/07 evening)?

Anything that might be helpful for the rest of us?

No interesting information to report here. Just the basics on being excited to welcome us and general information on what materials will come in the mail. Oh, and a reminder that orientation will be pretty boring, but a good time to meet all of the other first years. It was a pretty quick conversation! Anyone else have something more helpful to add?

Nothing new really. But, anyone in Philadelphia this weekend should make their way toward Manayunk/Kelly Drive as the Philadelphia International Championship bike race will be taking place on Sunday. Good times no matter whether or not you're a cycling fan!

i'll be there this weekend. i'm coming on thursday and will be hanging out in the area that night. if anyone will be around and wants to meet up pm me!

i'm kinda confused about the whole loan thing...i already finished the entrance counseling, but haven't received anything from any of the lenders. I called the finan aid office and they said that i will be receiving something from the lenders, and that i can sign the promissory note now...but i thought that we sign the promissory note after picking a lender. Can anyone please help me out? thanks

hey guys i was wondering if anyone had heard of Empirian Luxury Towers? its a pretty cheap place to live and it seemed pretty good when i went down there, but the reviews online arent exactly the greatest. im hesitant to just trust the reviews though, because those people always post the most negative things. if anyone has any input, itd be helpful.

I've called the financial aid office and it seems we receive all the loans (Perkins, Stafford, PLUS, ect) when we start in August. Give them a call, they are very nice.

Hey all,

I'm an incoming first year at Drexel. Coming from NYC, so not so thrilled at the prospect of living in East Falls. On two other waitlists (one of which is looking extremely unlikely), so unless I get accepted off those lists I will most certainly be joining you folks this august. I am IFM as well.

Currently planning on living on wissahickon in one of the complexes. Do not have a car (NYCer), although I am contemplating Center City (despite its high prices) since I thrive much better in an urban environment.

Holler back!!

BK

My cousin lived there, and he didn't seem to like it. He told me that I should check it out myself to see what I thought of it, so it must not be totally bad. But I could tell from the tone of his voice that he didn't like it. I got a similar response from another person I talked to who lives in the area. It seems like they've changed their name in the past few years, but I can't remember what it used to be.

Some one upthread mentioned that living on Wissahickon might be dangerous. Does anyone know anything about Henry ave or Indian Queen lane?

Wissahickon might be rumored to be dangerous, but as far as I know the whole East Falls area is slightly sketch. I have vaguely heard that Henry is safer, but I don't believe it since many of the non-complex buildings have been subject to break-ins (Queen Lane being used as a proxy here). The other thing is, I haven't been able to find a resource that lists the rental agencies that rent out the row houses and small units around those areas, which seem like the cheapest, more convivial places to live but unlike the big complexes their management companies are hard to find. If anyone knows any, pls forward them my way, it would be greatly appreciated.

Speaking of which, if anyone is looking for a roomate (or maybe 2 or 3), I'm looking to live around campus at least the 1st + 2nd years until I buy a car and move to CC for years 3+4. I'm a non smoker, runner, 26 year old male. I think I may have found a place on wissahickon, but am not sure if it is the right one yet. I think a row house could be a great place to be for 2 years.

I found an apartment in a duplex in Manayunk through the listings on the Drexel housing website. It was purely by chance though, but I noticed that there have been some listings on that website for smaller apartments and complexes. Hope this might help

Does anyone have any information on this Big Brother/Sister program included in our orientation paperwork? Is anyone doing it? Are there any second years who did it last year and thought it was worth it. I've never done anything like this before, and was just wondering if it was good networking or a waste of time?

anyone still looking for a roommate? i havent started looking for a place to live yet. Im a 23Y male from cali, non-smoker, very easy going, prefer to live in manayunk area, and i plan to bring a vehicle...

and one the one.drexel.edu website, are we supposed to be able to access our financial aid info, i dont see anything on there.

Congrats on your acceptance folks. I am a 3rd year and I love being at part of Drexel. This school is way better than it is given credit for. Once you're here, u'll understand how well the program is run.

Anyways, to the point, a lot of you might be looking for loans etc. Although our school pushes you to SalleMae medloans option, I would suggest you shop around as there are many different lenders that offer better packages and save you thousands in the long run.

I recommend T.H.E Total Hight Education loans http://www.northstar.org/ I have all my loans through them. They have very good program for medical students, and offer much better repayment options than the sallemae scam.

If you have any questions about IFM or anything about Drexel med, feel free to contact me.

IFM Yr 3.
Go Pittsburgh Steelers!

i'm going to do it. i don't really know anything about it but what they've told us but i don't see how it can be bad. if it goes well you get a person to talk to who's been through it already. and if it doesn't i don't think they can force you to hang out with the person.

how's everyone doing with their pre-matriculation checklists? i did my CiM stuff tonight while being bored at work (i work nights... that's why i'm on sdn at 4 in the morning, i swear it's not just because i'm a huge dork).

Hi jboz3. So far, all I've done is the HIPAA certificate and requested a transcript from my undergrad institution. It seems like there are a lot of things on the checklist.

When is everyone leaving their jobs? I'm thinking to resign the third week of July.

I'm done with my "job" in a week, woo! Time to play Colorado-style for a while before moving mid-July.

Hi Everyone,

After hearing what the financial aid director at Drexel had to say, I got the impression that Drexel has limited money for students. I am wondering if anyone has received a scholarship from Drexel, either from the list they provided or not?

Thanks! Can't wait to meet everyone :)

i'm done with my job on the 14th of july. i'm moving my things to my apt on the 19th but i'm not officially moving down there till the 30th.

Last week i received an email with my scholarship info attached.
on another note, how many are living in the manayunk area with a car? i might need to find someone to carpool with for the orientation.

Hey dude, sorry I didn't get back to you earlier. Classes can end anywhere from noon to four but the good thing is that all the lectures are available online that same day later that evening. So, don't feel compelled to hang around for the last lecture of the day if it's getting in the way of your schedule. There are some things like labs and conferences that mandate your attendance so I don't advise skipping those, but major tests and quizzes are usually first thing in the morning.

PIL's Gross class is on a much more condensed schedule than the IFM, so we are on totally different schedules and never have to occupy the lab at the same time despite all the cadavers being down there.

The Big-Little thing is really low key and most of the interaction occurs during the orientation. After that you basically have a phone number or email to meet with them if you ever have any major concerns, but it's not like you have to meet with them every week or anything. It's a good chance to get a crack at some cheap books (since the bookstore stopped buying old editions and then stopped buying everything back after a while), some free food at the BBQ, and some answers to any questions you might have up front. I personally had a ton of questions about what books to buy and my big was really helpful in that area. After that first week though, we pretty much just said hi when we saw each other, although I could have gotten ahold of her at any time if I had other concerns.

I'm probably not going to be on here for a while, but anyone can PM me if they have any questions before orientation starts. See you guys soon. Good luck with everything.

Jamen
