Drop in and talk about yourself...

Interesting thread.. it reminds me a bit of orientation, without the crappy icebreakers.

I'm a 23 year old pseudo-grad student at UCSD. I consider myself a grad student, the Bio department considers me a grad student, but financial aid just told me today that I'm an "undergraduate/other". 😕 The problem arose from the fact that I will just be there for a year and am not going to be obtaining a degree (I'm essentially doing a self-made postbacc program). Oh well.. that just means I get less financial aid.

I graduated with a BS in Psych from UCDavis last year, wanted to become a research psychologist throughout most of my undergrad and was planning to go on to a PhD, but started considering med after my boyfriend went through a lot of heart problems (he's okay now though  ). That led to volunteering in a hospital and reading tons about medicine and physicians, which convinced me that medicine's for me and resulted in a return to school. I'll be going full-time this year taking O. Chem, Bio, Physics, and possibly Spanish.

September should be a great month for me. In 2 weeks I will be quitting my part-time job I've held since last September which has been driving me NUTS (I HATE paperwork and offices), sometime within the next 3 weeks my boyfriend and I will finally be officially starting our design business (I'm so excited!), and I will hopefully start working in a research lab at the UCSD School of Medicine P/T (I've got an interview this Friday.. keep your fingers crossed). Lots of changes. 😀

Now for a little more personal stuff. I live with my boyfriend who I'm indescribably amazingly in love with. We've been dating for 2.5 years but were best friends before that, and plan to get married once we can figure out the best time (between college, law school (him), and med school (me) we're finding it difficult to think of a time when we'll actually have any $$). I've got 3 younger siblings, 2 boys and 1 girl, and we all get along very well. Next time I go home we're going to have a massive lego battle. I have quite a few hobbies, but the most notable are writing, design, reading, cars, and dancing.

And that is more than enough about me! (Although I could easily go on for pages 😉 )

Does anyone else notice the time 11:11 more than any other? I think it has something to do with symmetry.
Anyway, I am 23, senior, took a year off in 2000 to mow grass and ponder my future. I've been to four different colleges, and changed majors 3 times. I will graduate with about 160 hours and only one major, no minors. Now that takes planning, people.
I work in a research lab (plant molecular biology) about 20 hrs a week. When I am not working, I like to sleep, run, or work out. I've found that running is a great way to relieve the stress of not knowing which schools, if any, will accept me.
Career goals: I hope to spend my first twenty years or so in military medicine, probably in surgery, but we will see. Then I want to devote as much time as I can to international medicine. There are many regions in this world where millions are dying of preventable and/or curable diseases, and I am sure, unfortunately, that this will still be true 25 years from now.
Well, I gotta go. I think I ate a bad cucumber a few hours ago.😱

That's what I'm doing! Except I'm 22 and living in the coldest place on earth (Michigan) . . . financial aid gave me the run around too. I've accepted it, I'll be poor forever!🙂

Hobbies:
I love to do a little bit of everything, but only for a little while. 🙂
I like quilting (I've started a colorwash quilt), reading (never tried Harry Potter, but LOVED 'East of Eden'), hiking, camping, kayaking (the only advantage of living in the middle of nowhere is being surrounded by nature!), Friends (I'm so addicted to that silly show) and the Oprah magazine 🙂 I also like creating little crafty things (like murals and such) to give to my friends. And I LOVE dancing and traveling.

Personality:
I'm pretty laid back when it comes to life, but ridiculously driven when it comes to school (but only stuff I like or that presents a challenge). I'm a pretty straight laced kinda girl, but have a mischevious side that gets me into jams every once and a while 😉

I just found this place a little while ago and am addicted!
It's great to have a different dimension to it now too...so we remember there is more to us than just med school!!

Hello everyone. I am an 18 year old biology major working part time at the dorm where I live. Yep. I like long walks on the beach and... oh wait, wrong forum. I am attending UC Irvine, so if there are any anteaters out there, HOLLA BACK!

but then again, I'm really into Spike Lee movies, saw Clockers last night and that was also pretty good (though not as good as 25th Hour, Ed Norton is genius)

Sachin

25th hour kicked ass... most of my friends liked it too but it didn't seem terribly popular.

i'm 19 and a junior at ucsd. i spend way too much time lurking here cuz i have no advice worth giving since i haven't done much and decided on pre-med pretty late in the game. i still have too many classes to take.
my name on sdn is my real name backwards... how creative

ok, my turn.

I was born in Los Angeles and moved to the midwest when I was 7. I am a 22 yr old, supposed-to-be-a-senior-but-probably-won't-graduate-for-at-least-another-year (thanks to non-transferring classes) at UMKC. when I eventually graduate, I will have a BA in Spanish. I have been an EMT for 4 years now and haved worked in an ER for the past year and a half. (which, BTW, is where i am now. I'm alittle bored at the moment)

I like to read (just finished The fellowship of the Ring), draw(charcoal is my friend), and play piano (I've played since I was 11).

As of right now, I have an empty passport but plan to put a few stamps in it later this year. I have family living in Australia that I'm just dying to visit.

I'm sort of the black sheep of the family when it comes to looks at least. Besides my dad, I am the only green eyed redhead. I have 3 sisters who are all blondes/brunettes with blue eyes. So i kinda stand out.

When it comes to personality, I'm pretty laid back, except when I'm stressing over chemistry. Most of my friends would say I am the one who never gets excited over things, kinda take it as it comes. I used to be pretty quiet, but since i started working in EMS, things have changed abit. Not that I'm obnoxiously annoying now, just a little more confident with myself.

Here's something I don't tell everyone: I've never had a boyfriend. Hmmm....not sure why, just haven't. I guess I'm just alittle too picky. And I'm waiting for Michael Vartan...😍 😍

Anyway, if you REALLY wanna know more, let me know. I'm sure I can find more to write about. 😀

Funny that there actually ARE two Dmitris on the same thread... well.. hell.. russians are coming!! he he kidding!!
Anyways, was born too, across the ocean, and few seas... only few blocks away from the beautiful Caspian Sea bay. Came here when was 12 with parents. Served some time in the army already here... which brought a fury upon my head from my mother, since she claimed that one of the reasons that we moved here was that I wouldn't have to face the rigors of the Soviet army... well so much for my mother's wishes... got the taste of the Airborne Jump Week in Fort Bragg, NC.. hehe
Hoping to graduate from Arizona State within the forseeable future and make it to med school..

Hey quid.. just like you.. besides everything else I love reading and hiking.... hiked down the Grand Canyon few times... an amazing experience... suggest you do that sometime! 🙂 I did get into ancient greek philosophy for a while... Plato's Symposium did shake me up a bit.. hehehe... did not expect to read that my best friend (according to Plato, who himself was reinstating words from Socrates) is considered to be my platonic lover... 😱 anyways.. the book is fun to read, only if you get away from any moralities for a moment 😉
I love to skydive... hence from my early days in the Army.. Arizona gives a great opportunity to skydive all around the year! 🙂
Hoping within my lifespan to see all the natural wonders of the world! 1 down (Grand Canyon).. 6 more to go.... including mount Everest. 🙂

This is a great thread! Really getting to know people here... some possibly as the future collegues.. 🙂

Good luck to everyone, keep this thread up and running!

Dang it, I haven't seen a movie in about a month and now I'm all jealous! 😛 I really wanted to see all the ones Tezzie mentioned but between school and planning the hubby's b-day, there's been zero time.

I'm a 26-year-old returning student; not looking for another degree, just my prereqs. I got my first degree in journalism and worked for several years as an editor at a large-ish daily newspaper, as well as publishing SGML documents for the military. I quit the paper last week but am still doing SGML 40 hours a week and taking 7 credit hours plus 2 hrs of lab. I am looking for someplace to volunteer on weekends because most of my volunteering has been in the news industry, and I'm not in it anymore.

I've been married to the love of my life for almost 6 years. I was planning to party hard until I hit 29.9. and then settle down, but I met him and knew that I'd never find anyone as great. And I still believe I was right! 😀 Hobbies and interests would include: Making crafts out of "found objects," especially those ubiquitous AOL CDs; reading; writing fiction and nonfiction; watercolor; tormenting others with my bass guitar; and picking one godawful reality TV show to watch each season. (Last spring it was "America's Next Top Model;" now it's "Newlyweds.")
Fav TV shows are Gilmore Girls, Alias, Reno 911, Scrubs and The Powerpuff Girls. I also like the Xbox, especially Halo and SSX Tricky. On PC, I like multiplayer 1st-person shooter games. Runtfest on Quake III Arena in particular. I swam and played basketball for three years in high school (and also was a cheerleader but not a very good one!), enjoy resistance training, swimming and street hockey, and like to pretend I'm athletic, but the truth is that I am pretty bad at all of them ('cept swimming -- I rule!). Sports I like watching would include baseball (go Cubbies!), tennis, figure skating, gymnastics, hockey and anything involving a bike or a board. I tried skateboarding once, but my mean brother said I had too much "ballast." (I have a nice brother, a mean brother, and an adorable little sister.)

I also love planning and throwing parties, going to other people's parties, going clubbing, shopping, picking out shoes, and giving and getting makeovers (except salon manicures, which freak me out). Yup, I'm a huge girlie-girl. I'm pretty anal about grades, but not to the extent that I'm psycho. In real life, I'm pretty laid back and a good listener, kid around a lot, and my friends tell me I'm hilarious. However, it's the kind of "funny" that isn't for everyone; my parents ask me if I think I'm funny, with a disapproving glare.

I love this post! i'm new to SDN, but i love it!

junior (so i'm still kind of a young'un, about this time next year i'll be where most of you are, stressing about secondaries and such) biochem major, minors in biochemical engineering, history.... at UD, doing research in biochemistry, hopefully will have a paper in JACS within the next few months...

now for interesting stuff,.... yes i read harry potter 5 too, in about 16 hours. had a friend who read it in 6 hours, i have no clue how. I also love LOTR, the books that is, the movies are great too though... if you haven't seen the new ROTK trailer, go watch it now!

i'm up there with the single, never really dated much people higher up on this thread... 🙂

i love ER, yes i know it's not real, and i love survivor, a worse addiction. i just love the strategy involved, the insanity of it, always has unexpected results due to the randomness of us humans....

Besides studying, my major pasttime, i'm a amateur biker, am a mentor to freshmen, love the board game Clue, and enjoy computer games. Favorite right now: Grim Fandango, classic. Oh, classical music too, Nocturne in E flat Major Op. 9 No.2 by Chopin 🙂 And i used to play piano, now i'm teaching myself flute. still way beginner though on that.

I also read the Harry Potter book in 2 sittings.

I'm 22 years old...originally from Louisiana but moved to NC for school (and hope not to return to LA). Graduated last year with an English major, and I'm currently working for my school's chemistry department.

I really enjoy reading (favorite authors would probably be Madeline L'Engle and Ayn Rand) and doing anything crafty. I really love animals (particularly dogs) and I currently have a bunny (who unfortunately is stone-deaf-- Makes me sorta sad actually, those big ears and not being able to hear a darned thing.)

Anyways, I'm a pseudo-vegetarian and have loved wine since I spent a semester in France. I'm a worrywart, but love to be silly. I like learning about new things, and so I'm actually kinda looking forward to the work of medical school. I'm a Law&Order and Trading Spaces junkie, but thats about all the TV I watch.

Me in a nutshell 🙂

currently I enjoy a game called airsofting which is akin to paintballing only using high-powered automatic BB guns.

Doesn't that hurt?
