Hi, I'm currently a freshman majoring in Biology in his first semester of college, and I'm wondering if I should drop my pre-req course, Biology 2. I'm actually currently taking this course alongside Biology 1, Chemistry 2, and some other non-science pre-reqs and right now my grade in biology 2 looks like it's tanking. All my science courses include a lab.

I've made some minor calculations, and it's not possible for me to receive an A in the class anymore. With the highest possible grade of a B and a likely chance of tanking to a C for the class, should I take the W and retake it later or continue the class with a possible C?

Thanks for any comments and suggestions.

Even if you end up with a C, it's only freshman year so you'll have the chances to make up for it by getting good grades in upper science courses.

I would only drop if I anticipated a C- or worse.

How are you doing in your other classes? One C during your freshman year isn't going to kill you (if med school is your goal), but don't let it become the norm.

How are you taking bio 1 AND 2 at the same time? Wierd?

Many schools offer something like a freshman forgiveness thing. Where, if you are unhappy with a grade you receive freshman year, you can re-take the class and your transcript grade will change (assuming you do better the 2nd time).

This maybe a better alternative than getting a W, although I would check with you school.

Having W's aren't terrible, as long as you can back up why you got them. I just wouldn't have too many...

From my schedule, I am currently doing extremely well in chemistry 2. Biology 1 is somewhat borderline A/B so it might take a bit more work. As for my other non-science classes, I'm confident I will pull out with at least a B or greater in each one.

My school actually signed me up for Biology II initially under the knowledge that "topics don't overlap so it should be fine". I've somewhat run into some trouble regarding this issue, but it wasn't too big. I haven't heard of freshman forgiveness so I will try and take a look into that. Thanks.

I'll think about my decision a bit longer as my drop deadline is early next month.

My advice would be to stick with it and try your hardest to get yourself into the B- range. Go and see your professor and make it known that you'd like to improve your grade in the class. There is still plenty of time left in this semester so stick with it and see if you can improve.

I'm not sure at all about the grade forgiveness thing. My school would replace the grade in your GPA but it would always be present on your transcript. The AMCAS (medical school application service) uses your transcript to calculate your GPA so I would be very surprised if your school would completely forgive a previous grade. It certainly wasn't that way at my school.
