How bad would it be for a pre-med to get something like a misdermeanor conviction for marijuana on his record before applying? It would seem to be a common thing among the college crowd for something like this to happen. I have heard that schools and licensing boards don't worry so much about misdermeanors, only felonies?

This has been talked about ad nauseum. Go back and look at one of the numerous other threads for more detailed conversation. But yes, a misdemeanor is not that big of a deal, given there is only one...multiple would be a problem.

Drug convictions are a particuarly sticky matter because as a future physician you will have access to controlled substances. That said, a lot of college kids smoke pot at some point or another, and adcoms know this. But then, most people don't get busted their first time do they 😉. For this reason, adcoms might be hesitant to admit someone with a past history of drug use.

That's not to say your medical career is over before it starts, though. Make sure that you are ready to deal with this in your personal statement and during interviews. You'd definately need to show that you learned/grew from the experience.

P.S. there's no need to get into how STUPID marijuana prohibition is (and it is stupid) in this thread. Smoking pot is illegal and everyone knows it. So if someone smokes, they gotta be ready to deal with the consequences.

What is bull**** is the financial aid laws for that.

Access to drugs? I think a cocain or heroin conviction could warrent denial. They are addictive etc. But come on, marijuana is nothing like drinking. Why can't our society understand something that was put on this earth is better than something we made, that is a poison (although a poison of choice for me). We are all going to be dealing with completely decriminilized marijuana someday...but I know some people on here will disagree!

And if i'm causing no harm
It shouldn't bother you"
