Hi everyone. I'm new to SDN, and I just wanna say that I am really learning alot from you all. Thanks. Anyway, I am very interested in attending Duke Med, and I will be doing Duke SROP this summer. Has anyone else participated in this program? If so, what was your experience like? I am really looking forward to going, and I was also wondering what Duke minority relations are like. What types of activities do blacks participate in, etc..?

Just your usual 'welcome to SDN' post. You should talk to Original - I think he is black, and he is going to be in Duke next fall. I'm about as white as they come, so I'm probably not the guy you should be talking to. 🙂

Anyway, the campus seemed pretty diverse when I was down there, and there is a large minority population in the city, at least that I noticed...

I can give you the inside scoop on Duke, but I've unfortunately never heard of this SROP program. In anycase I can definitely put you in touch with people who can tell you whatever you need to know about it.

Brandonite is right about how diverse Duke Med is. It's one of the most diverse medical schools in the country. The general student body there IMHO is very friendly and down-to-Earth. In addition to this, the medical education there is top notch. Even amongst the top schools, Duke med grads have a reputation of being very well trained. Residency directors love them and they essentially write their own ticket. The free research year and/or 2nd degree throws 'em into a whole new class. 'Nuff BS. If I'm right that SROP is an acronym for "Summer(or student) Research Opportunities Program" then I'll probably be able to offer some info in the near future. I'll be in the MD/PhD program and intend the be active in minority recruitment into biomedical research. Holler! 🙂

Original- How did you get into Duke? I find it simply remarkable that you got in. Congratulations. What are your stats if you don't mind me asking? I really don't think I even have a chance, but I'm still trying to be a little positive. I am a sophomore with a 3.44 gpa, 3.1 bcm, currently taking physics. Duke only seems to want people with at least a 3.7 and above 30s on the MCAT. I'm just really scared that I won't get in anywhere, unless I get my GPA up to a 3.5. Any advice?

Any advice?•••••Your overall gpa is not bad. It's true that a 3.5 will look better, but I think you should focus your attention more on your BCPM gpa. Considering that you are only a sophomore, you definitely have time to pull it up significantly and get a chance at Duke or any of the others. But you'll have to do something different ASAP. Such as drastically increasing your study time and/or changing your study methods.

My stats are 3.8 Ugpa and 33 MCAT. I had lots of leadership & Xtracurrics; am completing a masters in mathematics; and I did research in neuroscience. Don't be intimidated by the stats of people at Duke or any other med school. Have confidence in urself and realize that there is no sub for you in the universe. Though you'll need to bust major @ss with regards your gpa. It'll also be a good idea to plan for some time off to study for MCAT (ninjitsu), and take a review course if possible. Thanks for the motivation. I really needed that. I'm in AmeriCorps right now, but I will be out at the end of this week. Working with AmeriCorps has been really rewarding, but it's eaten up lots of study time. Once I get out, I'll have lots of study time. Reading these boards and your advice has helped me to realize that I need to vote much more time to studying. I've known this for a long time, but sometimes I just don't have the drive to study all of the time. I think if I was to get an A in physics, a 5 credit course, I would feel so much better about going to medical school. Again, thanks alot for your help.
