Duke University SOM has launched what appears to be a new service-oriented masters geared towards pre-meds with those matriculating this Fall being their first class.

Here is the link for those interested http://medschool.duke.edu/education/degree-programs/mbs

Does anyone here know any more information on this program? Anyone considering on applying?

I am about to e-mail them asking if their courses are graded against a medical school curve along with a number of other questions but I thought I would make a thread here as well.

When you find out more info, if you can post here that would be great! I see they don't have a minimum mcat score as it doesn't seem to be required for the program but I wonder if they have a GPA cut off.

anyone else thinking about applying to this program? It's new so I'm not sure whether to apply or not

It does, I guess I'm just worried how med schools will view such a new program. Also no linkages or guaranteed interviews. Interesting to see how it goes. I might apply

That's very true! Maybe the Duke name will carry some weight.

I'm applying as well. It seems pretty neat from the description online. Also, I read that they do offer pre-matriculation advising. I'm not sure if that means guaranteed admission anywhere, though.

Yea, I'm hoping the pre-matriculation advising is very helpful. I'm curious to see how the coursework and EMT training will mesh together.

I'm a little worried about the cost. $70,000 for one year is well over 2x more than what I owe for four years of undergrad. I'll be speaking to a financial advisor soon, though.

Yeah seems a bit expensive for such a new program with no known linkages or %matriculation into med school

Yea it's really expensive but it did say they have Scholarships. Need and merit based.

I'm also applying to this program. I contacted Duke MBS Admissions and here is what they have to say about funding: "Scholarship funds will be awarded based on the Admissions Committee's overall assessment of several factors that include applicant potential, financial need, special/unique circumstances or attributes, and contributions to community."

Does anyone know how many students will be enrolled in the first cohort?

Also, has anyone else applied to Hopkins' M.S. in Biotechnology, Health Science Intensive (also a fairly new program)? I still haven't received a concrete decision (been on hold for a while) but I'm wondering which program would be better for med school apps. They seem to have similar goals, except that Duke does not have MCAT prep included and Hopkins' thesis is optional & there is no EMT training. Both are one year programs and cost ~40 grand/year (tuition only).

I just applied here yesterday! Has anyone heard from them since December? I think this program looks great, and the EMT training gives it a different edge over some of the other's I've applied to!

A couple of months ago I spoke with the people heading this new program up. I would be happy to answer questions people have. I applied to the program several weeks ago and have not heard back - although I am not sure if my second recommendation letter has arrived.

Here is what I learned in my converstaion:

The inaugural class will be ~26-30 students.
Classes are NOT combined with medical students, although some classes are similar and taught by the same faculty.
The expense is comparable to other grade boosting Masters programs.
Letters of Recommendation must be specifically for a Master's program.
There is no required MCAT
Minimum GPA 3.0

I will do my best to answer other questions

Did they tell you anything about financial aid and scholarships?

I think both are available, but I don't really remember talking about it. I could be wrong though. Just email Duke MBS - the email is on the website. They are pretty helpful and quick with responses.

Where did you hear about the Skype interviews? I definitely must have missed that on the application.

Is anyone else having a bear of a time completing the PDF application form? I just spent HOURS and could not save or send the completed form.

Has anyone heard back? When I called earlier this week they said decisions would come out any time between Wednesday-Monday, but decisions should be sent out before Monday.

Similar situation for me....so I still think you qualify for priority review. I did not receive a confirmation until the 20th but they said that I would be considered for priority review since all my paper work was in before the March 13th deadline.

I spoke to admissions on Friday and they said for priority we would be notified by email or phone call on Monday.

I was under the impression that March 15th was the deadline for priority. Was it in fact the 15th?

No problem, thank you!! Good luck to everyone

Mind sharing stats for those waitlisted / deferred?

Hi everyone!

Just wanted to ask your advice on a couple of things: I just came across this thread yesterday, and would like to apply, but do you think it's too late? Especially given that my LORs and paperwork still have to all be submitted...

My second question is: this program seems very unique (and I love it!), how do you think other medical schools would think of the program when graduates apply to medical school upon completion of the program?

Thanks for your help!! 🙂
