sorry if i'm duplicating an exisiting thread...

i just called duke and was told that i'm sitting middle of waitlist. not good right?

ps. they said that they have not started moving the waitlist yet.
 
Hey hello, did they seem annoyed at all about you calling? Did you have to push them to get an answer, or was it pretty easy? I'm just itching to call! 😀
 
I think it depends on who you are talking to when you call. Just remember the list is not set in stone. You never know! K?

A number of people have told me that it's solidly ranked and that sending in supplemental info is likely futile. Well, I talked with one of the Deans who said they do look at supplemental info and that could help your placement on the list. My friend at Duke said that may also try to "preserve the diversity" of the class. But who knows?

Ask them where you are but don't give it another thought. The only thing that works after that is prayer.

Not good I suppose.

But not panicked either. I have been concentrating so much on the whole May 15th and choosing between two schools that I haven't thought about Duke or Cornell for a while

Well, I will keep you guys posted if I hear anything knew/good!

I don't know where I am. Maybe I'll call tomorrow.

Hey, do you guys think you're really in the middle? Or do you think they just tell everyone that because it's sorta neutral, or just because it's easier than trying to explain why they can't tell you anything? I had heard that in previous years they would only tell you top or bottom half. I bet that led to a lot of withdrawals. Who knows, maybe you're actually better off than you think!

Man, this whole Duke waitlist thing is driving me crazy!

The person who answered sounded kinda young. She asked my name, placed me on hold, then said you are in the middle.

But in all honesty calling didn't help. I feel the same way I did before. That is my chances are not great but you never know!

Ya know!
 
BrentwoodBoy, any luck finding out your position on the waitlist? Are you into any other schools, on other waitlists, etc.?
 
the lady had a mild-mannered, reasonably young voice. she did put me on hold to look things up, so i'm presuming that she isn't just making things up for fun. as to the # on the waitlist or where in the middle i sat, she said she could not disclose. i was told during a previous phone call that the waitlist is ranked; supplemental info is accepted, but your rank will not shift dramatically, regardless. they've been very kind every single time that i've called... as i posted on another thread, sometimes with waitlists they might not even be looking for you to get all a's 2nd sem sr year. it could be where you're from, your undergrad institution, etc. - and well, there's nothing that can be done about that!

hi guys, i just called yesterday and the woman told me that they do not disclose that information. she said that in previous years they did, but this year they aren't going to. also, she said that they haven't accepted anyone off the list yet...they are still in the process of reviewing the files. hope this helps. i will most likely call again today or monday to see if i can find out my rank...
 
Cool shoudygrille...thanks for letting us know! I also got hit with the classic "sorry, we can't say" response. Ack! I hope the list starts moving soon.

Does anyone have an idea about how many students have accepted Duke's offer, to date? Last I heard, they had accepted around 170 outright, and about 40 had declined the offer. This was from omores, who's currently a Duke student, and was told this recently by Dean Armstrong (here's the link to the thread: <a href="http://forums.studentdoctor.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=002365)." target="_blank">http://forums.studentdoctor.net/ubb/ultimatebb.php?ubb=get_topic;f=2;t=002365).</a> It's a little scary to think that at this point they might still have an overfilled class, by 30 people! Don't worry. The 130 figure was from 2 or 3 weeks ago. I'm POSITIVE it's lower now. Even last year, which was very tight by their standards, they still took ~19 people off the waitlist. With 30 fewer acceptance offers, they could easily grab ~50 people!

I'll check with the admissions office next week and see what I can find out about how many people declined and when they expect things to start moving.

Maybe they tell everyone who calls that they are in the middle of the waitlist. That way they don't get anyone's hopes up, and those who do get accepted get an extra-special surprise. 🙂

Did you just get the e-mail today (I was confused because you put 5/17 as the date you got in on the waitlist movement thread)?

It's about time the waitlist started to move! 🙂
 
I received the email on Friday asking me to call them. I called today. He said they are "working the list". Translation: they are actively pulling people off the list.

This should be a great sign to the rest of you because it is only 5-days post May 15th!!!!!!!!!!!!!

What message did you get on your online status page BEFORE you were accepted? Was it a waitlisted message?
 
Actually, the office received a new letter of intent I sent them along with a recommendation from my boss on the day (last Friday) I was emailed about my acceptance.

For BrentwoodBoy: My status page changed sometime between Sunday at 5 and Monday at 9AM. I know because I checked Sunday at 5 after reading the email for the first time, and it gave the "you are on the alternate list" message. After I called the office around 8AM on Monday, I checked at around 9AM and it said you have been accepted to Duke. More than likely, this occured after I had contacted them and confirmed my acceptance.

Hope this detail helps. I am not sure how they are contacting everyone else. I do know that it says alot for Duke to start accepting off their waitlist so early in the game.

There was a thread last year about the wailist. I'll see if I can bump it for you guys.
 
Hey- Just wanted to let you guys know that I just called the admissions office. I was calling "to update them on my new phone number and address" (which you need to do by email, by the way) and I also asked about my position on the waitlist. They said all they could tell me was top half or bottom half, but when she looked me up she said I was around the middle . . . maybe the theory is right that they tell a lot of people that- I am not even sure she actually looked me up-
 
I concure don't by into the "middle" of the list answer. Figure that since their waitlist has already begun to move, plus the fact that there are slackers out there still deciding, that you have a decent chance.

Keep sending those letters!!!!!!!!

This is VERY frustrating. No one is telling me anything when I call, although both times I have spoken to the same lady. Can someone PLEASE find out the name of the person who is giving out this info. I would really like this info. At least if I am in the bottom half, I will have some closure.

Still no word for anyone else? What's taking them so long?! 🙁 I guess they're not on a once-a-week schedule like Columbia. Once again, the mystery surrounding Duke's waitlist continues...no one knows when it'll move next! <img border="0" alt="[Laughy]" title="" src="graemlins/laughy.gif" />
 
Ooh, I almost forgot! Omores, were you able to get an update on the number of acceptees currently holding spots at Duke, or anything else useful like that?

I haven't visited SDN in a while, but thought I'd check in because I remember the waiting that I was going through this time last year. FYI, I was in the Admissions office last week and they said that they are right at the 100 person mark right now. So now when an accepted student lets them know he/she will no longer be coming to Duke, they take someone off the waitlist. One for one, and I guess this will continue on until school starts. It's all a matter of how many people decide to decline their acceptances. I know that's not much help, but hopefully that will clear up some of the confusion.

Wendy of the Admissions Office says that the declines are just kind of trickling and, and that she expects they will continue to do so through the summer...
 
Wow, I'm surprised at the lack of waitlist movement thus far. But it's good to hear that now they'll be offering a spot each time someone withdraws! Hopefully a lot more movement will occur in June 😀
