being from california isnt so great. getting into the schools is just as hard as getting into hopkins, harvard, duke, etc.

Yeah and all the schools in TX except Baylor and UTSW suck hard.

UF would be better off if it wasn't in Gainesville. In 30 years, I think UCF's medical school will be the flagship medical school for the state of Florida.

On a different note: I asked this earlier and nobody responded so I'm trying again:

Does Duke pay for any of the travel expenses for the second look weekend? (It's right around the corner, March 30).

i dont think they pay for it. Not certain though.

Yo, so hopkins, ucsf, or duke...? the one that gives you the most money?

On the other hand, it makes me happy when I see people on this forum who are so grateful that they got in anywhere

I mean, US allopathic is one of the harder roads of life, right?

EDIT - Don't get me wrong, UT-San Antonio wouldn't be my top choice....but if you want to do primary care and you care about debt.....

Oh yeah that's absolutely true. They just suck if you want to go into academia.

Touche. Me? I want to go into academic medicine so that I can *own* an admissions committee somewhere. Then I'll religiously check the thread for my school so I can mail out some of the acceptances just a few days later...I'm an evil mastermind.

most of us don't know and are waiting for any news...

quickest answer: call Aron (sp?) at admissions (919-684-2985) and ask over the phone.

So I just saw the mailman putting mail in everybody's boxes for my complex. I told him I was expecting an important letter and politely asked him if he'd mind checking the mail for my apartment. This guy is a serious jerk and he said I'd just have to wait until he finished. Geez!

Wow, This whole method of sending out acceptances before rejections is a really cruel method. I was reading back on Harvard's thread from last year and they sent the rejections first, so at least they didn't have to speculate every single minute.

I thought it was confirmed that everything was being sent at once, and that acceptences will be sent all week.

I'm not too sure about that by now, unless a bunch of people start receiving acceptances today.

I think all schools should send acceptances/rejection/waitlist notifications by email. then send the snail mail/priority mail package.

I just want you all to know that not all of the acceptances have been sent out yet. Trust me, this info comes from a reliable source (i.e. ADCOMM). Don't lose hope just yet. There may be enough room for ALL of us! 😀

Well, nothing in the mail. I just can't imagine why there'd be such a delay between the wave of acceptances on Monday and the next wave of letters. I'd like to be optimistic, but the most likely explanation looks like those were the initial acceptances, and the waitlists/rejections went out yesterday. If everything went out together, we would have had people getting waitlist and rejection letters by now.

So celltech - since you seem to be on the in. (GREAT for us by the way.) Do you happen to have any idea of whether they are doing it systematically by interview date or pretty much randomly?
I ask because well ... Duke is by far my top choice. I had very definite plans for that 3rd year if I got in and I am in love with the school and program. However, sadly - I have received not a single inkling of news from the school. I interviewed sorta late (Feb 13th).
Unforunately for me, I will be out of town from tonight through Sunday also. Argh.
I have to admit I am a bit discouraged by the stats of the accepted people thus far as mine are not quite that good, although I did have a very unique undergraduate experience. 😎

Thanks so much!

OK, I just received confirmation: the last of the acceptance letters went out yesterday at 4:30. I repeat, "acceptance letters." They are not sending waitlists and rejections via bulk 3-5 day service. Everything is mailed via the regular 2-day US Postal service.

Oh man...I guess if I don't hear anything by this Saturday, I should expect a thin envelope 🙁

Personally, I think that is a bad idea. I will not swindle my way into knowing. I'm not that impatient. 😛

For some reason I feel oblicated to use a smiley face of some sort every time I type something on this thread (or any thread for that matter). It adds character. 😎

Then how do you puncuate something that really needs it? 😕

With a thumbs up, too! I love it!

I actually just got into the emoticons within the last week. I'm trying to break in easy.

Did I mention that beneath my mild-mormon-mannered exterior I am going positively INSANE to hear something?

And I'm actually SaltLakeRyan now. My wife is a paralegal at a law firm up here, which is why I can afford to be a substitute teacher for the time being. I was so excited to "help kids learn," but it turns out that it kind of sucks. My job pretty much consists of calling role, hitting play on the VCR, and making sure nobody makes anybody else bleed.

BWAHAHAHA!!! Well underneath my terrorist-looking exterior (thanx to the beard I have been growing for Duke), I am freaking out too!

Don't ease your way in... go balls to the wall. 🙂 😀 😉 🙁 😛 :scared:   :luck: :meanie:

for those of you who were accepted (congrats), do you mind telling us what your PAS status pages say?

Browsing through the earlier pages of this thread I caught something about beards, but I didn't really bother to get the whole thing....

So are we growing beards for the first day?

Funny story: At BYU we sign an honor code promising not to have beards. Mustaches=okay, beards=notokay. I'm not really sure why, it's not that we think beards are evil or anything. The idea is to look very proper and conservative, I suppose. Anyway, my PI was a really cool guy and we regularly got together with the other cool systematics PI for dinner, parties, etc. Dr. Johnson (the other PI) has a brother-in-law who works in law enforcement in London. He told Dr. Johnson that there was a critical shortage of men with mustaches for the digital lineup. We ended up having a mustache contest with a six-week growing period followed by judging day from the Women in Biology-type club. My lab won, then Dr. Johnson supposedly submitted all of our mustache pictures for the digital lineup in London.

I guess that's what we do instead of drinking at BYU...

Nice... drinking is for losers anyway. Ya the beard thing was that I decided (since I have never grown a beard out) to grow my beard out like 2 months ago until I get some sort of an envelope from Duke. Well, still no word so I still have a beard. Either way, I'm shaving and getting a haircut Saturday. But ya, it has been tough. If we get into Duke, we should definitely have some facial hair growing competitions! 👍

maryland just lost. sweet.

In a show of solidarity with me, my brother has taken to wearing his Duke shirt to bed every night until I hear something. He's going on 4 nights in a row now (nothing in the mailbox today 🙁)

RWallace, for the sake of my brother's poor roommates, please! send me something!!!

for those of you who were accepted (congrats), do you mind telling us what your PAS status pages say?

Here is what mine says. Same as a week ago.

"Your application is complete and is awaiting a final decision from the Committee on Admissions.
All decisions for applicants who have interviewed for admission to the 2007 entering class are sent via the U.S. Postal Service and will be mailed from the Office of Admissions during the month of March 2007.

To insure your privacy and to protect the integrity of the admission process, no decisions will be transmitted over the telephone or through e-mail at any time or under any circumstances.

We appreciate your interest in the Duke University School of Medicine and wish you the best of luck!"

supposedly last year duke accepted 200 students to get 100 students enrolled in the 1st year class. does that mean that they initially only accept 100 and fill in from the waitlist as candidates decline? or, do they initially accept slightly more than 100 since not 100% will accept? this wait is awful!

Well for everybody's sake I just hope your source is pretty damn reliable cuz I got nothing here in TX today.

Does anybody else just about throw a clot when they refresh the Pre-Allo thread page and see that the most recent poster in this thread is somebody new?

They initally accept more than 100.

two more days and then the rest of us are rejected? This is heartbreaking.

My permanent address is at home because mail here isn't really reliable...so, everyday promptly at 12:00, my parents call me to tell me there wasn't a letter in the mailbox. I can't even tell them to stop becasue that's what I want. Med school really brings out the masochism in all of us.

But we haven't seen a single waitlist yet...

didn't intend to send anyone to the hospital🙁 my apologies

No, no, no...it's my own paranoia that has become unhealthy. Next week is going to come, Duke or not.

Hey calltech, I'm beginning to question how reliable your sources are... can we not just ask RWallace to chime in and keep it real with us. We are all rejected right??? We have shown too much interest??? :scared:

No news? No rejections, no waitlists? If they were sent on the 7th, somebody in Durham must have heard by now. I have a sneaking suspicion that they're not giving us the whole picture here, just to keep the horde of crazy premeds from smashing down their doors or something violent to that extent.

We know that some at Duke indeed pop onto SDN once in a while. I'm sure they're taking special delight in seeing all the hub-bub (and some pride that a thread devoted to their school is approaching 20 pages long).

Has anyone received a waitlist from Duke?

It's not a letter, but... my fortune cookie from dinner says, "A judgement will rule in your favor."

How appropriate!

(Now if I could only find out if it's true! 😱 )

I just wanted to make the 900th post...

but someone beat me to it. I guess I'll settle for 901
