Oh, and I almost forgot! 7 days! One week!

Cue "One Week" by the Barenaked Ladies (or, if you're more gloomy, there's always "The Ring"*... one week after watching the tape...)

Greetings again from Illinois.

I'm with you SB. Hang in there:luck:! Working in a lab Duke-Dreaming all day here so I feel you.

We need to recreate the FCD 2007 SDN microenvironment on here for good luck.

Heh, bored lab technicians unite!

I agree... but how to go about doing so? Maybe from now on, every post should end with the dancing banana smiley (it was really popular last year).

Six days left!!!! 😱:luck::corny::luck:

:banana::banana::banana::banana::banana::banana: (6 bananas!)

Wow, I can't believe it's only 6 days. Though I bet they'll go by incredibly slowly. I am also waiting to hear from my local (Canadian) medical school, which releases decisions on.... May 15. So, it'll be an anxious wait, for sure. :scared:

Anyone wanna make predictions on how many Dukes Anonymous thread contributors will be admitted from the wating list? I say three. Just a random guess!

:luck::luck::luck:

Yeah, Duke very rarely sees a lot of waitlist movement... I'm really pessimistic (it's been a really long application cycle! I'm worn out!). I'd love to think that the reason that Duke's waitlist is larger this year is that they intend to take more people from that waitlist... Eh, who knows?

Does anyone want to take bets on how many acceptances we'll see on this thread and when the calls will happen (this idea is inspired by the UPenn acceptance thread)?

That's what I was suggesting 😳 As I said, my guess is three from this thread.... As for the calls, May 16th, I think.

ooo!!! may 16th is my bday! ... i want a bday gift from duke 🙂!!!

:banana:Official Dukes Anonymous Acceptances Prediction:banana:

1 acceptance: SBBunny (phone calls around 2pm on the 5/16)
3 acceptance: nova1983 (5/16)

----
Okay, so how many acceptances do y'all think will happen on THIS THREAD (not total Duke waitlist acceptances) and when do y'all think that the first round of phone calls is going to be made?

I was actually suggesting some kind of wager... The problem there is that I don't actually know how to go about betting. Maybe the winner gets a Duke t-shirt or some huckleberry jam? Anyone who had some free time in the Raleigh-Durham airport probably noticed the peculiar abundance of huckleberry merchandise...

OK, Bunny, you seriously made my heart skip a beat. Geeez. I thought that you just got accepted! "1 acceptance: SBBunny" Ha. And while I'd be really thrilled for you, well, you know.... Please, please, just think of my poor heart before posting the word "acceptance" in bold with dancing bananas surrounding it. :laugh:

And yeah, a Duke acceptance on your birthday.... Talk about an amazing present! :hardy:

Very few, at least judging from last year. I believe only around 16 waitlisters were accepted last year. Hopefully this will be a better year.

i was under the impression that more than 16 people were offered acceptances off the waitlist last year from previous posts on this thread. maybe out of those offered only 16 people took their acceptances from the waitlist? can anyone clarify this?

I'm pretty sure it was actually less than 16 last year.

Oh no! I'm so sorry, nova! I'll be more careful. With dancing bananas comes great responsibility. :banana:

Burnsie... long time no see. Where are you these days?

:banana:
I'm in the Dirty D, almost done with spring break (unfortunately). It's been sooo nice not to have to go into the hospital or do any work at all this week. I'm definitely looking forward to this year being over. How's B&D and everything else?

Have any of you checked out the Duke Med Class of 2012 facebook group. It is filling up and is now at around 30 members. Hopefully it does not fill up too quickly and that there will be more room for us waitlisters!!!

:banana:

So, the Duke Med 2012 Facebook group has 29 members (just do a search of "Duke 2012" and you'll find it. Let's compare the size of the Duke group with the size of other medical schools (I'll include the class size, just to give you a sense of how full the group is):

(class sizes via MSAR- I think the number corresponds only to MD students)

-Duke Medical 2012: 29 members (class of 98 people)
-Columbia Medical 2012: 51 members (class of 155 people)
-Harvard Medical 2012: 85 members (class of 165 people)
-Yale Medical 2012: 24 members (class of 99 people)
-Stanford Medical 2012: 62 members (class of 86 people)
-Mayo Medical 2012: 30 members (class of 43 people)

I suppose the data are hopeful for us prospective Dukies? I mean, there's obviously a lot of factors to consider... plenty of people might not have decided yet, tons of people who are 100% committed to Duke probably haven't thought to join the facebook group, and not everyone uses facebook. When you compare Duke's group to that of other schools, it seems like we might have a decent chance :luck:. Let's hope that's true. Viva Quince de Mayo (Long live the fifteenth of May)!

Oh yeah-
FOUR days 😱

:banana: :banana: :banana: :banana:

How are y'all structuring your email updates? Do you start with the address, date, etc as with a formal letter or do you just start with "Dear [X]?"

Good facebook breakdown Bunny. I love how scientific we're being 😀. Another thing to take into account with the facebook numbers is that some people may have registered for the group when they were accepted to Duke but have since withdrawn. For instance, I know of at least one person on the Yale group who has already decided against attending but hasn't removed themselves from the group.

I've only sent one email update but I did the Dear X version. I figured email is a little less formal so...

Hey Bunny, you speak Spanish?

Cool, I'll try for the less formal approach (then attach a word document of the more formal version). I sent my two previous letters via snail mail, but I want to make sure that this one gets there before Thursday...

Hablo muy poquito Espanol. I learned a little bit of Spanish from volunteering at a hospital (I pick up languages pretty quickly). I wish I knew more. I speak Polish and Japanese- not exactly the two most useful languages for practicing medicine.

Unbelievable, 4 days.... SBBunny, I love your extremely scientific approach to the facebook group analysis. You are most definitely a scientist at heart! 🙂

I wonder if anyone will get a call before the 16th. I'm torn whether to anxiously check SDN in the next few days or whether to just go incognito and try and wait it out on my own. Anyone gonna try the latter?

Heh, I'm glad that my facebook analysis was useful.

I was definitely thinking about just taking a break from SDN for the last few days of the week... I'm not sure if I'll be able to do it or not, but it seems like a good way not to be too discouraged. Then again, I think that I'd like to know for sure whether I've missed the first round of calls or not. I tried to stay off of SDN for March... it didn't work 😳

I think that I'll end up anxiously checking SDN. When acceptances start going out, I'll be curious to know who ended up getting calls. I'm not expecting to get into Duke (although that certainly would be an amazing turn of events), so I guess that I'm not going to be too disappointed when I end up with silence. Good luck everyone :luck:

Yeah, I agree that it's a very different situation from decision time in March, when I was incredibly hopeful (and incredibly anxious) about hearing news from Duke. I still have a tiny bit of hope left, but the chances of getting off the waiting list are so small and I am in a realistic state of mind. So I'm with you, Bunny--I definitely won't be anywhere near as disappointed as I was in March if I hear nothing but silence next week (although I'm sure I will still get that stomach sinking, throat stinging, heart racing feeling if/when people start posting about phonecalls...).

All that being said... I will be SO PLEASANTLY SURPRISED and SO INCREDIBLY OVERJOYED if I get good news! 😍It would definitely be a dream come true.

Anyway, I'm sure you all really needed to hear about my personal state of mind... hehe. Not sure what motivated me to go on that rant! 🙄

:banana::banana: I JUST GOT ACCEPTED!!!:banana::banana:

(Heh, heh. OK, I'm lying. I'm already a student. I couldn't help myself...)

Mean, mean, mean, mean. :meanie:

I hope you got your kicks, though, meany! 🙄

I'm a bad person, I know.

What are you people doing checking the thread at this time of night anyway?

I'm on the west coast, so it's really not that late.

Nope, but close. I'll give you a clue: I have big, bushy sideburns and I wrote the greatest anatomy textbook on the face of the planet.

Keeping the countdown going.

3 days left = :banana::banana::banana:

Someone got in off the Penn waitlist today.... Maybe this one'll start moving soon too?!? :biglove:

Current Duke students, do you guys have any inside news for us? That is, any current Duke student other than GuardianAngel (a misnomer if there ever was one) since I have no trust left in him/her. 😡

Oh man, nova, I was JUST getting ready to bump up the thread. My phone is now at my side at all times (I have a bad habit of just dumping my phone in a drawer and not checking it for days). If it rings, I'm going to go... well... bananas. Let's hope for the best :luck::luck::luck: 🙂banana🙂

Glad we're in this together, Bunny. I am literally between everything in my life right now (work, school, travel, etc.) so I don't even have anything to distract me these next few days -- which is why I am spending so much time on SDN.... Just bought Juno on iTunes though, so that should give me nearly two hours of distraction. Hah.

GOOD LUCK ALL! :luck::luck::luck:

Heh, my job doesn't give me as much to do as I wish it did...

Have you heard of This American Life? You can stream full episodes online for free. I recently got into listening to This American Life and I absolutely LOVE it. That might be good for some entertainment.

What is it, exactly? I opened the link, but am too lazy to poke around more than superficially -- ironic, considering I have NOTHING TO DO! Hahah. But why don't you just tell me, Bunny?!?

OK, signing off this thing now. Catch y'all tonight!
