DVM class of 2014???

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hi all. I'm a pretty non-traditional student applying in the next round, I've been reading this site and it's stressing me out! I just turned 29. I graduated in 2003 with a bachelor of engineering and 2004 with a BA in applied mathematics. I went and got a MSME in 2006 and worked a bit in medical devices and then got bored with filling out FDA paperwork and quit that job and went and rode horses in europe a bit (logically...right?).

Currently, I'm finishing all the dumb lower division classes I never finished in undergrad while I work for a horse vet p/t and in the clinic of an animal shelter p/t. I have the eventual goal of wanting to be a prof in equine medicine. I'm interested in applying my engineering background to real time equine health diagnostics. I'm also really interested in some facets of equine lamenesses. Hopefully I get into UCD (instate), but if not, I hope to get into penn or colorado....but I guess I'd be happy to get in anywhere!

Hello All!

I am a traditional applicant I guess (not really sure what that means). I graduated from Cornell this past May and am now taking a year off to work at an animal clinic and take physics. I am applying for the first time this year (yay!) and will be applying to the following schools:

-Cornell 🙂
-CSU
-Kansas
-Missouri

I took the GRE once and bombed so I'll be taking it again next month....ugh hate that test.

me too, except bombed isn't even close to describing what happened to my test. 🙁 i hate the gre, but not as much as it hates me apparently. lol

anyway, welcome! 🙂

Hi everyone-
I am a traditional applicant, I suppose, with a slightly aberrant back story. I graduated from Oakland University this Winter and am applying this cycle 👍.
Cum. 3.26, Science 3.3-3.6 (depending on which school calculates it), and last 45 hours is a 3.83. I took the GRE about a month ago and it was very humbling but as of now I have roughly average scores. I've got ~150 hours of SA experience, 200 h of animal experience, and a TON of lab animal experience (2.5 years at ~30-40 hrs./week). I'm trying to get more veterinary experience, but it has been hard to come by for some reason 🙁. Veterinarians in my area don't seem to want to embrace prospective students.
Schools:
-MSU (IS, but I truly believe that this will be a textbook excercise in futility)
-Ohio- high # OOS, but still....:scared:
-Western- If I had to put all of my eggs in one basket, I think it would be this one. If anyone that has some tips for me (those who have applied there, or been accepted there) that would be fantastic.
-Iowa- high number of OOS, plus I hear that they are on like # 60 on the alternate list this year...that's gotta mean something right?
-Tuskegee- This one I am sort of on the fence about
-Ross-
I'm going to live by this motto. The best vet school is the school that you get into. In the end it is ALL about the person and has very little to do with the school.
GOOD LUCK to everyone!

Thanks! I've been finding it a chore to muster up the determination to study for this test again. I studied so hard for it for two months straight and did horribly, I don't want that disappointment again. But I guess I have no choice in this matter...::sigh::

Hello all!

I feel you! I bombed my GRE too! 🙁 But I was just wondering, do you absolutely have to report ALL the gre scores to the schools you're applying too?

ETS will send results of all general tests taken to wherever you ask scores to be sent, so the schools will definitely get all of your scores. So yes, you have to report them all.

edit: unless you canceled them at the end of the test

another piece of info: if you have scores under two different last names (your name changed between the first and second time you took the test) both sets of scores will not be automatically sent out. you have to call and request both sets of scores be sent out. just now called about that, and thought i'd share in case someone else is in the same situation. 🙂

Hi all, another long time lurker, first time poster! Man this site is addicting...but informative, so its a good addiction. Anyway, I'm a traditional applicant, 20 yrs old and graduating in Spring 2010 with a BA in Biology with a specialization in Marine Science/ Minor in Psychology. GPA= 3.97, Science GPA is a 3.98 (I think). As for Vet/Animal experience, about 400 shadowing SA Vet, 400 as Vet assistant in an emergency/specialty SA hospital, 400 intern at a Sheep Farm, 300 as an intern at a Dairy barn, 200 as a Petting Zoo lackey, and 4 independent research projects (3 independent study, 1 senior thesis) on various marine animals which sum up to be about 700 hours! I hope to get some time this fall volunteering at my local aquarium in their hospital section (you can never have enough aquatics!) and hopefully finding a job as a tech/assistant (just to pay the bills).

I haven't taken my GRE yet...probably because im terrified of it. I did average on the SAT and fear i'll do the same on the GRE, curse those standardized exams!

I plan to apply to Cornell (IS), UPenn, UF, Illinois, UC Davis (long shot, I know, but they have a killer aquatics program), UPEI and VA-MD. Tufts maybe...if I have time afterwards.

Well, I guess that's enough of an introduction....good luck everyone!

Hi all!

Short-term lurker, but I figured I might as well join the party! I'll be applying for the first time this fall as a traditional applicant (I'm 22 and just received my B.A. in Chemistry). My overall GPA and science GPA are about average in terms of most applicants but my last-45 is very strong. I took my GREs once (very strong quantitative and writing, mediocre-decent verbal) and I'm going to take the test again at the end of the summer to try and bump up my verbal a bit. I'm coming from a very competitive liberal arts school and have taken a few of my requirements elsewhere (I hopped on this boat a little late). I have countless hours of animal experience (small and equine), about 70 SA vet and 60 Equine Vet, and I'm going to start working as a veterinary assistant in a SA hospital at the end of this month! I may try and volunteer at a local zoo, but I'm not sure yet. Right now I'm looking at UPenn (IS), Cornell, Tufts, VAMD, CSU, Wisconsin, and Ohio State. My gut feeling is that I want to do equine but I'm very intrigued by exotics. I'm very intimidated by the whole application process--my "pre-vet" advisor is somewhat helpless when it comes to veterinary admissions so I'm pretty much on my own. Anyone have any advice or helpful hints?

Thanks in advance! Nice to "meet" you all.

Wow, some of your guys' stats are making me nervous! Well, I'm finally applying to vet school. I had originally gone into college as an engineering major and decided to switch to become a vet after almost three years of that torture. So my cum. GPA is pretty low, around 3.1, but my last 45 is about 3.8. Experience wise:
~1000 small animal hospital
~400 wildlife rehab
~100 zoo hospital
~400 wildlife field work(that's where the little guy in my avatar came from)

Applying to Davis(IS), CSU, Minnesota, Wisconsin. I'm really interested in wildlife, but then again almost all the specialties in vet med look cool 🙂

Good luck to everyone this round!

Hey Everybody,

I'll be applying for the first time this fall. I'm 23yo male, graduated from Wake Forest, low GPA (around 3.2), haven't taken the GRE yet, and currently working at a SA hospital. I haven't decided all the schools I will be applying to, but I know Tufts (IS) and Cornell will be on the list. I also wouldn't mind going off to Europe. As my domain name implies, I am looking to do farm animal medicine. I look forward to getting to know everybody better in the coming months.

p.s i love how everyone has their track picked out 🙂 I have NO idea what type of vet I want to be. I think I am leaning toward public health or research though 🙂

Don't worry about that too much - most of us will probably change our minds in some way or another during vet school, and maybe even after. Having an idea is good, mostly just so you can show you've thought about it.

I need to change my info... since I posted on this thread last (quite a while ago) I have decided that I'm only applying to Oklahoma this year. I just really, really don't want to move if I don't have to - I love my house, my neighbors, the school, the town... plus, my husband's job is pretty nice and supports us well, so I'd hate to move him away from that. And, let's face it, Oklahoma is my best chance (even though I realize plenty of people get in OOS but not IS).

So, wish me luck folks... I suppose I'll apply to the places I listed NEXT time, if there has to be a next time.

I'm 21 and will graduate 2010 with a BS in Zoology from Auburn. This is my first time to apply. I have about 600 SA, 250 zoo, 150 LA, 100 research, and about 250 wildlife hours of experience. I've gone to 2 prevet summer programs (one in Africa and one at Texas A&M). I have participated in lots of community/school activities and held some leadership positions. I have an average GPA (around a 3.6) but my last 45 hours were bad!! I've taken the GRE and got just above average, but i'm taking it again and will actually study really hard this time.

I'm planning on applying to
Tennessee- IS
Auburn- My undergrad school
Mississippi- Have a connection here
Kansas- Good OOS #'s
Ohio- Good OOS #'s
and possibly Iowa and Illinois

Hmmm I have been thinking about this a lot lately...and if anyone has advice i'd gladly take it!!😕

I am 100% sure I am attending Glasgow in the fall as a member of the class of 2014...but I think i may reapply to a few US schools again this year to maybe have the option of moving back closer to home next year. It is still up in the air as to if I want to, but if I do, I am leaning towards Missouri, Tufts, VA-MD (IS), and maybe one other (Kansas, Ohio, or Iowa because of their OOS acceptance rates...). I really like that Missouri and Tufts are direct application so I have more time to think if reapplying is what I really want to do...either way...I shall be class of 2014!!!

Good Luck to all!!!:luck:

I have been reading the boards for a few weeks and posted a few times. I suppose it is time to introduce myself. I graduated in 2006 with a BS in Biology, concentration in Animal Biology, minor in Chemistry. I am volunteering at the vet clinic at the local humane society. I am studying for the GRE now and take it next week. (Yikes!) I will be starting the online Animal Nutrition class through OkSU in a week or so. I am 25 and a first time applicant. I am applying to Oklahoma State, Western, and Ohio State (IS-maybe). I am currently interested in emergency medicine/critical care and mixed animal practice. But I know there is a lot I will be exposed to in school, so I will probably change my mind a thousand times! (That's what women do, right? haha)

Oh I have about 700 hours mixed animal practice, 150 hrs zoo nutrition research, and 16 hrs SA shelter medicine.

I'm here as well lurking and posting. Non trad first time applicant. Contemplating applying to U of MN, Iowa state, Univ of Illinois, CSU, VA/MD, and U Penn.

I was going to say that Missouri is only a direct app if you are IS but it looks like it is either way. That's cool

Hi everyone! So i'm pretty excited to see so many people post replies already.

I'm a traditional, 20 yr old, graduating this spring of 2010 at ohio state with a BS in animal sciences.

I have an above average GRE and GPA compared to the stats of previous classes. i'm lacking in the average amount of experience tho. I have 200 SA, 1000 research, 20 equine.

I'll be applying to Ohio State (1st choice), UC davis, U penn, and 2 others that i havn't decided yet.

i think you might be the first person i've seen from osu that doesn't say "THE ohio state." 😉 welcome!! you have a lot of research hours, is that your primary area of interest right now?

Hi everyone! I figured I would introduce myself as both a new member of the SDN forums and a hopeful for the c/o 2014!! I will be graduating from NAU in May 10 with a major in zoology and minor in chemistry. My GPA took a recent decline but isn't too bad. Cummulative ~3.48 Science and Math is slightly lower and I have no clue what my last 45 hours is. I took the GRE once last summer and BOMBED it. So I will be taking it again here soon (biting nails, completely scared). I have ~4,000+ hours working in SA which includes exotics such as sugar gliders, pot-bellied pigs, hamsters, ferrets, etc. I have ~70 hours volunteering at a wildlife zoo. And many, many hours volunteering in various shelters. Living in Phoenix and working at a SA vet here and then moving to the small town of Flagstaff and working at a SA vet there I have realized the diversity that small towns and big towns can have on practicing veterinarians.

Schools I am applying to:
1) CSU (WICHE) and it is an absolute dream of mine
2) WSU (WICHE)
3) UC Davis (WICHE) its a long shot but why not?

Possibly:
4) Western- I really like their policies and PBL system.

:luck: to all! I hope to see some of you as future classmates for c/o 2014!!
WE ROCK!!!

ckd816,
Where in AZ are you attending school at?

Although I have a lot of research experience, it is not my career interest. To graduate with honors, I have to do a research project, so that is where half of my hrs are from.

HI ALL!

So I have submitted all of my applications (besides Tufts) and have my GREs and transcripts ordered and on there way to the various schools. I am wayyy nervous about the application cycle!! Some days I think I am a strong, unique applicant and other days I think I am average at best. I think its driving me crazy 🙂

So here's a question:

I emailed the schools to see if they have recieved my materials. Will I actually hear back or should I call?

Its going to be hard to sit back and wait. ahh!

My schools are:

Tufts
UC davis
NCSU
CSU
OSU
Illinois

You're ahead of me - it's a good day if I feel like an average at best applicant. 😉

As far as emailing schools, I can only speak for Davis but I wouldn't call them. They will let you know if they received your stuff somewhere between late Oct and late Dec, and if you call before that they will basically tell you the same. I remember people here getting emails in like November the last time I applied and I was freaking out because I didn't get anything until very late December (saying they were missing a GRE score, and I had about a week to get it there!). I had called less than a week prior, twice. One person told me they weren't sending out emails if the applications were complete, the other told me they couldn't say anything until they were sent out. So yeah, probably don't call. 😉

Hi all! I'll be 26 this year. Fourth-time applicant (due to three cross country moves in as many years), first year as IS. I have a Bachelor's in Biology/Microbiology, and am planning on specializing in Pathology and Infectious Disease...ideally I'd like to work in diagnostics.

I'm only applying to Ohio this year, for several reasons. I currently work at the teaching hospital, so I have a foot in the door, and have come to really feel at home there. It seems each school has its own "personality," and this one seems to mesh well with mine. I've also got a house and a hubby, so I'm more tied down to one location.

I'm currently stalling, because OSU's supplemental app makes me tired. 😀

Best of luck to you all, and try not to stress too much!!!

My turn!
I'm 24 (25 in Novemeber) so I suppose I'm on the fence about being trad/nontrad.. anyway.. Graduated with a degree in Psychology (yes psychology!), and a minor in biology. Coming from NJ, it's going to be rough but I'm going to stay strong 🙂
Cum gpa is low (very low) as I had some issues in the past when I was 18-20. Not counting that, my GPA from the school I graduated from is around a 3.5, science is a 3.4 and last 45 is a 3.9.
I have tons of hours in neurosci/lab animal research and a honors citation for my senior thesis. Beyond that I have worked in a variety of settings both vet and animal exp wise so I'm hoping that will help out on my apps.
As far a GRE, I'm taking it Oct 1st!😎
schools i'm applying to:

CSU
Tufts
Tuskegee
Ross
Edinburgh
Iowa
Missouri (yay 6-year elim plan!)
maybe a few others...

Yes it does. I'm not applying there for several personal reasons though.

better late than never, i suppose...

i've posted a few times, but never officially introduced myself! i'm 27, and a non-trad first-time applicant currently living in texas. majored in anthropology at a decent little liberal arts school in the northeast, undergrad gpa of 3.5, but i managed to improve that slightly with good grades in my pre-reqs this past year. i've got about 1300 hours SA clinic experience, 4000 hours shelter experience, and 3500 wildlife research (traipsing around after monkeys in kenya). grew up riding/handling horses too. just took the GREs this past week--not thrilled about my math score, but did well on verbal (that's what i get for having a librarian for a mom). anyone have any input as to whether that'll be a huge handicap?

applying to: tufts, colorado, davis, wisconsin, and maybe edinburgh and LSU.

lovely to meet you all! good luck in these next few weeks...

Well, I am well and truly a non-trad 😛 I'm 38 first time applicant. No prior degrees, though I'm one class shy of 4 AS. degrees! I spent 9 years in the Navy before getting out to pursue my vet dream. I'm only applying to UTK as I live 30 minutes away and work 10 minutes away.

You all have been a GREAT help while I have been lurking and reading everything these past few months! I wish you all the best of luck:luck:

Hi everyone.

I'm 23 and a first-time applicant. I just graduated with a BS degree in May. I have 2 years experience as a tech with both LA and SA, and zoo animal and wildlife experience. Wish I had food animal experience to add to the list though. My GRE wasn't great and my GPA is ~3.5 depending on how you calculate it. I can't wait for this process to be over! I applied to Auburn (In-state), Minnesota, Michigan, Kansas, Mississippi, Tennessee, Missouri, and Western.
