when it says on the website that students with "competitive" stats are welcome to apply

whats considered competitive?
is it competitive if u were to have stats above the average of their mat students?

Yes.

If you do better than their average matriculant, then your scores are competitive for that school, assuming that the rest of your app is solid.

What EDP adcoms don't want to see are apps from desperados with low scores and mediocre ECs who think that EDP will boost their admisssions chances.

ED is best used if you are a solid applicant who knows what school you most want to be at.

I'd say if you want to apply EDP, set up a meeting with the Dean of that school and get an honest opinion. They'll either tell you definitely apply EDP or apply regular admissions. BTW this is advice that I've read online here at SDN and it makes sense to me. EDP seems a lot like putting all your chips in one basket, so it's best to have some assurance that you're in a good position.

I would say "competitive" would be somewhere close to the national averages for matriculants. For example, Michigan State suggests that EDP applicants have at least a 3.5/30 to apply.

Depends on the school. Some will even give you written advice about what is meant by "competitive". Check individual websites and schools as it will probably vary.

This may sound stupid, but what's the advantages and disadvantages to applying early to a school. Does applying early put you at a disadvantage for other schools you apply to?

Advantage: If accepted EDP, you got yourself a spot at your most highly rated med school.
Disadvantage: The other med schools have to wait for a decision from the EDP one before they review your file. This means that if you're not accepted EDP, you basically got yourself a late application to all the other schools.
