Everyone always asks this and everyone else always says search or there is a number war. So I think there should be a sticky for this so that everyone can read it and all questions will be answered.

I know there are salary figures buried in one of the stickys already, but the data on those is from 1999.

This is from an article in the New York State Dental Association October of 2008 issue. The title of the article is Private Practitioner Income Continues to Rise. It lists the results from a 2006 ADA survey.

This is a survey and of course these are averages, so there will be dentists earning more and dentists earning less.

Here are the numbers (private practice):

In 2005: national average net income of an independent private practice general dentist was $209,350 (full time 32+ hours a week)
and $146,000 (part time about 25.5 hours a week)

Independent specialist: $326,800 (full time 50.9 hours a week) and $219,800 (part time 24.9 hours a week)

Employed dentists:

General: $109,500
Specialists: $139,700

Specialty breakdown:

Endodontists: $327,500
OMFS: $399,000
Orthodontic and dentofacialorthopedists: $285,800
Pediatric: $314,400
Periodontists: $263,200
Prosthodontists: $212,300

Gross Billings:

General Dentists: $660,650
Specialists: $882,300

Expenses:

General Dentists: 59.9%
Specialists: 55.1%

Payment:

General Dentists: 46.7% from private insurance
38.7% from direct patient payment
9.1 % from managed care
4.4% from government programs

Specialists: 48.1% from direct patient payment
37.6% from private insurance
7.1% from managed care
6.1% from government programs
