Hello,

First post was zapped so I'm trying again. You're lucky; this one will be shorter. DD is a H.S. junior, excellent grades (4.0 u.w.), will have 9 AP's (5.0 on all taken thus far), all around good student. Anyway, we don't get a lot of guidance counselor help. In fact, if we hadn't done some research, we'd never have heard SAT II's mentioned as possibly needed for some undergrad admissions. Anyway, here's the question: DD would like to apply to UF pharmacy school after two years. Must she come from UF as an undergrad or will any florida university do. I guess I'm trying to say is there an obvious admissions advantage coming from UF. I think she can get into UF, that's not the issue ... but we live next door to UCF, and their honors program offers full priority scheduling for all honors students for every class for four years. I do not believe that's the case at UF. And in today's current budget crunch climate, I know how difficult it can sometimes be to get the classes you need or want. DS is at UCF and he's had such an easy time with scheduling via the Burnett Honors College. So, I'm trying to figure out ... if all things are equal in terms of admission preference would it be better to have her attend UCF for two years and then apply to UF or if UF students get priority should we go that route? Any who have dealt with this scenario ... love your advice!!

Thanks,
Zebes

Not knowing anything about UF in particular (I'm sure those posts will come later today), it doesn't sound like DD will have anything to worry about whether or not UF gives preference to its own. If her grades stay similarly strong in college, and if she works or volunteers in a pharmacy also, it sounds like that will be the beginning of a strong application to pharmacy school.

Since she's still a HS junior, there's plenty of time to think about getting into pharmacy school! But so long as you're thinking ahead, when it comes time to pick classes for college, she should keep in mind the pre-requisite lists for any schools of pharmacy she wants to apply to.

Dear Daughter (DD)
Dear Son (DS)
Dear Husband (DH)

usually anyway

How about you have your DD do her own investigation? There is nothing more annoying and unpleasant to work with than kids who are always expecting their mommy dearest to resolve all their problems. Well, outside maybe their parents. I hear all kinds of horror stories from people in admissions, records and financial aid about parents who demand to know why their little one is not treated like a king/queen. It looks like she is already doing some of what she needs to be doing - getting excellent grades, but it is not enough. She needs to learn to stand on her own to feet, and it is a good time to start.

(Don't take it personally, please, it's my big soapbox that people don't take responsibility for themselves anymore, always expecting to be mommied... )

I wish I'd had parents that were as involved in my life. Granted, it can be taken too far, but there's no evidence of that from one single post.

Grow some manners already.

I think UF's pharmacy school gives some preference to UF undergrads, but how much or how little is up to debate. If they're looking at an all A student, then it probably won't matter. However, if they're picking between two similar students that are borderline and one is from UF and one is from another university, I'm guessing they would go for the UF student.

My friend is from Creighton and the admissions there told him they prefer Creighton undergrad. (But, of course, they still admit non-Creighton undergrads.)

IMO, as long as the excellent grades keep up, go for UCF if it is better for her. I don't think she would have a problem getting in.

My biggest advice for pre-pharm undergrads is to make your own schedule to allow completing all the pre-reqs within 2 years and then going straight to pharm school (as parabolic mentioned above). This means between the 1st and 2nd year of undergrads, during the summer, you need to take the PCAT and you need to apply to pharmacy schools. If you don't time correctly, you can have 1 year of doing no school work.

SCCPharm,

Thank you. This is the kind of info we're looking for. DD already wrote to one of the pre-pharmacy counselors listed at the UF pharm school page, but we haven't heard anything back yet. I just stumbled upon your site one day while she was at school, and thought I'd give you folks a try since so many of you are not that far away from having been through this process. I appreciate all help.
