I followed the EIS 2015 thread and found that it had a lot of useful information about the program and application process. I just completed my application (first time) and was hoping to have another thread like the one last year. Anyone on here apply for the program this cycle? Is it your first time?

Just submitted my app, first time applicant.

I also followed the 2015 thread. I applied for the second time this year. Here we go!

Just submitted, first time applying, looking forward to following the thread

Glad I didn't find the 2015 thread until after I submitted! Super helpful information but just amplified my anxiety but like 10 haha

Glad to see others on this thread. Good luck to everyone!

Sent in my application on the very last day of submission. And the wait begins......:panda:

What backgrounds do you all have? degrees? work experience, etc? Just curious.

I just graduated in January with a PhD in Population Health (infectious disease epidemiology). I worked at the state health department for 2.5 years doing outbreak investigation for foodborne illnesses (LOVED this job, but needed to quit to devote every waking moment to the all-comsuming dissertation), then I worked this spring as adjunct faculty teaching stats, and now I am back at the state health department as a population data specialist.
I've been drooling over the EIS fellowship for the past 6 years, so I have all my fingers and toes crossed at this point :)

Wow that is awesome Tendaji! I dont have quite as much PH experience. I just finished my internal medicine residency and am working as a hospitalist. I am almost done with my mph in epi and global health. Interested in infectious diseases and have done various global health projects , one internship with a health department etc. I've wanted EIS forever too and am dying with anticipation. I hope this year invites will go out early September since they don't have quite the same Ebola situation as last year

I just found the 2015 thread. I applied in 2013 and never saw that my status online went to anything (including being under review). Never heard back at all whether I was even looked at. I applied again now for 2016. My online application status current says "online application has been accepted, check back to check receipt of supporting materials". Does anybody else have a different message? For anyone who has applied in the past, how long did it take until your application was "under review". After reading the 2015 thread, I am now concerned that somebody thought my application wasn't complete and never even looked at it in 2013

My application status says the same thing: "online application has been accepted, check back to check receipt of supporting materials"

My application status says something like " your application materials have been received. Your application is being reviewed. Check back for a status update."
I am a recent infectious disease epi PhD graduate. I also have my MPH and have been working for about ten years in PH doing mostly epi research. I have minimal applied experience which is why I'm so interested in the EIS program.

My application states "All of your application materials have been received. Your application is being reviewed. Check back for an update on the status of your application." I am a physician with an MPH, practicing as an attending for four years. Just as a heads up, I noticed the Application Instructions on the EIS Application Homepage now says "Candidates selected for admission to EIS will be notified by February 28, 2016." Thought the thread may find this interesting. https://fms.cdc.gov/Legacy/Application/EIS/ApplicationInstructions.aspx

Mine just changed today to say everything has been received and application is now being reviewed!

Mine changed too. I just finished 3 years of IM residency and I'm doing a chief year now. Always wanted to be a part of the CDC but I have limited epidemiology/PH experience. Excited about this whole process and nervous at the same time...

Friends, I am hoping we will start to see some invitations to interview in the next week or two.
Do any of you have access to current EIS officers? Perhaps this is a good time for us to meet with them and ask for interview tips. I'll get in touch with my EIS co-workers and bring any interview tips they can share to the rest of the board.

I'm also wondering, how are you dealing with other job opportunities and life plans during this EIS wait? I'm finding it a bit tough to keep next year open for EIS, without putting all of my eggs in the same basket.

I am applying again this year, i first applied back in 2011. In 2011 i received my interview invite on September 12th, so i'm hopefull we will hear something soon about interviews. I would imagine though that there are changes in the notification dates from year to year.

Hello all, I'm applying for the first time this year. Based on snooping through last year's thread here, it looked like invites went out around the last week in September through mid October, but 2014 was an outlier because of scheduling conflicts due to the CDC Ebola response. Hope we hear soon!

Anyone else's status still read "Your online EIS application has been successfully submitted. Check back to track receipt of supporting materials."? I wonder why the message has changed for some applicants but not others.

I'm not going to pretend to understand the mysterious innerworkings of the EIS application process, but I understand that the applications are reviewed in sections reflective of the applicant's areas of interest. I remember this affected the times that interviews were offered last year, because the applications progress through the channels at various rates depending on who is assigned to review them. Maybe this is the reason? You could also give them a call and make sure.

I'm not sure if this helps ease the stress of waiting, but my area of interest is chronic disease. My application was completed the last day of submission, not sure if that impacts the order of application review. I asked for all my references be uploaded as pdf files and my application only changed from 'waiting for supportive materials' to 'under review' a week ago. I doubt that offers insight into the mysterious inner workings but maybe it might offer some stress relief of wondering....

So glad there is this thread again for this year!

Hello everyone, I am applying for first time this year. I found a lots of useful information from 2015 thread. If anyone haven't saw, I highly recommend to review that.

And did anyone get invitation of interview up to now? I am so nervous for waiting...

Made the interviews last year, didnt make the cut. Reapplied this year, waiting with ten fingers crossed.

I had difficulty finding both 2015 and 2016 fora via google search, I suggest this forum renamed to include the words 'CDC' and 'fellowship'.

One love to all fresh and oldies like myself.

Congrats on landing an interview last year! Would you mind sharing your interview experience?

The interview I had was a series of five one-to-one interviews with different officers lasting 30 minutes each. Three interviews were with supervisors from three CDC units (the three areas I chose on the application form, I presume). Two interviews were with members of the selection committee. My impression is the three supervisors will submit a written report while the selection committee members will be in person when they finally decide on whether to take you on to the EIS.
All interviewers were nice and professional. It felt like they genuinely wanted to get to know you and your motivation for wanting to get into the EIS.

My interviews went so well (I thought at the time) it felt like I made the cut.

Anyone thinking about calling soon to ask about interview status or is it too early? It's rounding out a month since we submitted but people didn't seem to get interviews until the 22nd last year.

I don't have any plans to. The only people I know who have applied, have all applied > 5 years ago but they heard back in as late as Nov/Dec. From posts from last year, it appears that it will have several cycles of releasing offers for interviews. It seemed like it was related to who is reviewing / how long it takes to get through his/her stack of applications. My uneducated opinion is that there may very well also be a waiting if you are the border to be offered an interview based on availability, but I don't know that for sure. In either case, I feel like I would only call at this time if my application still said "waiting for supportive material" and I knew I had everything in already (as one of the previous posts did mention that there had been a glitch in the system in years past which was fixed by a phone call.)

The EIS site says that interviews will be held in October and November, so hopefully we'll be hearing soon!

Thanks! That sounds manageable. The good news is that you get extra points for re-applying, so if it was just a marginal decision last year, you'll be in extra good shape this time.

Second time applicant. Was interviewed and waitlisted last year.
Thanks for starting the thread.
Hopefully in less than a week we will hear back regarding interviews!!!

Good luck to everyone! I applied for the previous two years in a row, made the interviews, which all went extremely well, but was passed over. I actually am at CDC and probably too familiar with the process. I did not apply again this year because I finally achieved a coveted FTE position and am very happy (that also took a few years to make it through). I have a Ph.D. and many years of experience. It's my opinion that I was a bit too far in my career for the few spots for the "Ph.D." candidates and since I was already here at CDC, it wasn't a good combo. Regardless, the interview experience was wonderful, everyone was great, and I always enjoy meeting the new officers once they start each year. For those with research experience and don't make the cut for the EIS program, I highly recommend the new Laboratory Leadership Fellowship. It is following with the EIS program each year, is 2 years, and will likely lead to a position due to the heightened awareness of lab safety, etc. in Federal Agencies.

Remember that statistically, the odds of getting in are really, really low - just to keep it in perspective ;) If you make it, that's awesome! Just don't make it your life goal to get in...that could become all-consuming (and disappointing)! There is no formula that is obvious to prior applicants or to those who were part of the interview process on the other side of the table. I had a few interview people who were extremely honest about the process and how it confused them that people they rated super high wouldn't get in...so just be yourself and relax! It's fun and take what you can from the entire experience. I have heard that repeat applicants fare better though, so keep trying (but don't stop your career waiting to make the cut).

My two cents, and (again) good luck to everyone!

If you're interested, here is the link for the Laboratory Leadership Service program:

http://www.cdc.gov/lls/

"LLS is a new 2-year CDC laboratory fellowship program that combines competency-based public health laboratory training with practical, applied investigations and service. LLS focuses on biosafety, quality management systems, and management and leadership competencies.

The program is aligned with CDC’s Epidemic Intelligence Service (EIS) to promote interdisciplinary training, applied learning, and networking. EIS has successfully trained epidemiologists for more than 60 years.

The inaugural class of 7 LLS fellows began in July 2015. LLS will begin accepting applications for the 2017 class beginning in May 2016."

Has anyone heard any information about this interview cycle? I feel like I'm going crazy waiting for some kind of motion.

Hi there! I'm a second-time applicant as well. (Applied two years ago, got interview, but didn't make the cut.) I'm a physician as well, just finished with residency a year ago and working as an attending now. I've also been getting very anxious over the past few weeks about an update, but I just received an email invitation to interview today. So it seems like the notifications are being sent out! Good luck to everyone!

I also just received my email invitation for an interview. Super excited. Good luck to everyone!!!

I just received an invitation as well. It sounds like this first wave of notices are going out slowly. Good luck everyone!
FYI the interview date options they gave me ranged from October 19-November 6.

Got mine too today!

Has anyone heard back confirming their interview time? I know last year it was pretty quick from when you turned in the interview form. Thanks!

Congrats, friends.

I also received an invitation to interview on Friday. I returned the materials last night, so not surprisingly, I haven't heard back yet.

I had trouble with the PDF so not sure if mine got in before 5 pm on Friday. I haven't heard back yet

Has anyone else heard about an interview this week? I'm trying to figure out if all interview invitations have been mailed out yet. Thanks!

I'm also still waiting to hear. My impression from last year's thread about this was that invitations went out slowly over a several week period, perhaps based on area of interest.

I also subscribe to the "based on area of interest" theory.
I'm infectious disease, and I am guessing ID Doc may be as well?

I think the waves of interview requests have more to do with professional training rather than interest. During my interview date last year, there were only 1 or 2 physicians in the group. The rest were PhDs, DVMs, and others. I got the impression that the MDs had heard earlier than everyone else and secured the first few interview dates. But maybe the ebola outbreak threw the normal system off...

Hi guys! I am a first time applicant, foreign MD, and finishing up PhD here in the US. I got my invite on Friday too but no word yet. I don't know if the invites are based on interest since I ranked chronic diseases first, though infectious diseases is in my mix. It could be a mix of the two, who knows. Let's keep the hopes high though. Fingers crossed for everyone!

Hi! I applied to LLS (the new lab oriented program), but I have not heard anything yet. Keeping fingers crossed. Good luck to all!
