ELAM Debt- Free Medical School in Cuba?

Just wondering if anyone has any information on ELAM medical school in Havana, Cuba. My partner will be attending this fall and I admit, I am a bit skeptical. The program is to help students "relatively" young adults who would like to work in underserved communities attend medical at minimal or no costs. (It's a 6 year program)

I've looked up info about the school and can't find much more than what they've posted. I found a twitter post from this year, congratulating 15 US graduates on matching residencies. However, some of the graduates finished their studies several years ago? I did find the name of one US graduate who works at a clinic in rural North Carolina also. I'm just curious as to how the other 200+ US ELAM physicians are doing. Wondering if anyone else has info on this school and the successes of US students? Any insight? It sounds too good to be true, but I could be wrong.

From all indications it's a pretty legit medical school, but not really geared towards placing physicians in US residencies. Go if you're okay with practicing in a Latin American country, otherwise don't.

Pragmatically, any non-stateside school is going to to a **** ton of difficulty matching, so their low US doc numbers aren't really that surprising.

It's not a scam if that's what you're asking.

I once showed my post-doc a really cool protocol I found in a paper that claimed to have superoptimized a very important protocol used in my research. The paper was from 3 yrs ago and she said, "It isn't true; don't waste your time trying it. If it worked as well as they say, it would already be the standard method used in the field."

Debt free medical school that easily gets grads back into the US....it would be more well-known and competitive if it really worked like that, imo. You will probably be worse off than someone from Ross (due to name recognition/history), but with a lot less debt

The Cuban education system, especially their medical education is quite reputable and has been for decades. Even though the US hasn't traded with Cuba in 50 years, the EU, Canada, all of SA has. And they have been very busy with their own medical technology. My gut feeling is I would trust Cuban schools over a large portion of the for-profit Carib schools

my comment was coming from a Cuban-American. Obviously I am biased and have no desire to go back to that communist filled country that took my families livelihood at gun point; however, Cuba has always been known for educating phenomenal doctors (my grandfather went to medical school in Cuba). I also spent quite some time in Spain and met with a bunch of wonderful doctors from Cuba who had nothing but great things to say about the education (now everything else is a completely different story).

Look it up on YouTube. There's a video from a guy who studies there. Cuban doctors are known to be some of the best doctors. And this is not from a biased POV I'm not Cuban haha. The Cuban medical school ELAM provides a completely different way of teaching, in America it is competitive, there they try to encourage more team work. The elam program is geared towards lower income students, between ages 21-25 only. And the entire curriculum is taught in Spanish! So it'd be best to practice before going if you intend to, and they also provide a Spanish crash course while there. Yes that program is 6 years long, and the quality of living is a lot different than US. But I've heard it's worth it because of the principles the Cuban medical school instill in you. Also, it is an accredited school, so coming back to us to find work isnt a problem. They only ask that you work for poor communities in your own country where health care is needed. I was reading that it's different because there's student from all over the world that come to ELAM. So there's plenty diversity. I know this post is about a year old but for anyone who has thought about this, I'm gonna post anyways. Hope it helps someone!
