I have my final year elective next year, and wanted to visit two different places (I have 9 weeks in total). I already have something lined up in India, but I was also thinking of doing a "clerkship" at Yale (as it has strong links to the Clinical School at Cambridge University, ergo I shouldn't have to pay an exorbitant fee). Can anyone give me a feel for what the Department of Ophthalmology is like at Yale - it seems small compared to MEH or the Wilmer.

I don't know a thing about Yale but those who know are at the Academy meeting now.

My impression is that Yale is not an outstanding ophthalmology program. Patients may "wow" but ophthalmologists don't think it's any better than the average program. I did see a fellowship application from a Yale ophthalmology resident but speculating on the program based on what I read in the application probably isn't a good idea.

Yale is a smaller program than MEEI, Bascom, Wilmer, Jules Stein, Wills, and Iowa, and, I agree with 20/20 that Yale doesn't have the same reputation as these programs. I know a former graduate of Yale, and he felt that it was an above average program and that he received strong clinical training there. Yale is not located in the best city, but you'll have to judge that yourself.

For a rotation, I think it'll be good. I've seen several letters of recommendations from Yale faculty, and it appears that students receive good clinical exposure there.

Good luck!
