EM forum roll call

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
27 y/o EM PGY1 in Washington state. Went to med school at the birthplace of EM. Regular reader of the EM forum, but infrequent poster. s/p 2 cross-country moves, 1 for med school, 1 for residency, and facing another short move to a new (to me) house. Love the environment of the Pac NW, but wish I had more time to get out and enjoy it!

You will get a definate bias in Miami towards Trauma surgery. Ryder is amazing and the attendings are awesome.

The ED is a disaster. 😱 Get out of Miami to get a good EM rotation so you can make a strong well understood decision.

Yeah, I've heard this from a number of people. I've kind of got my heart set on moving out west after this, so I'm thinking of trying to rotate in Denver and SLC. I shadowed on a shift in Denver while on vacation once, and I absolutely loved it out there. I've got a family, so I can't afford to move to CA.

You mentioned being an artist. I used to be a band manager in Miami and a professional drum instructor for a while.

I am sure some of the west coasters can comment on the programs out there. I don't really know anything about them. 🙂

You've heard it because its true. The trauma there is amazing and the attendings and residents are fantastic. You won't get a better trauma rotation. I will be doing a month there in dec/jan for the TICU. 😱

31 Year old PGY-3 EM at Lincoln in the South Bronx. Currently in a string of nights. Tired, grouchy and currently trying to think of creative ways to deal with the string of champions (ETOH greater than 300) that will inevitably come in this foggy, soggy saturday night.

31yo male. Probably the earliest member on SDN and one of the first moderators(family medicine). Now doing it right as a PGY-2 in EM at Texas Tech. Led BKN to SDN.

Join date: Nov 1998. Holy cow! He's been posting since he was an M1. I wonder if I'll have that much SDN stamina when I'm an attending.

Yay!

I'm glad my idea has been so well-received.

And that I've discovered another Carolina girl (best in the world...)

OK, I'll post too. 28 y/o PGY-1 SUNY Upstate Resident loving intern year thus far. Currently on medicine floor and actually enjoying it (I'm with really cool people). I enjoy fishing, skiing and spending time with my wife and 15 month old son. Couldn't ask for anything more!!!

EM PGY2 wondering why the only people his age are already attendings (and have been for some time). Hmmm, must have been those 13 'lost years', aka EMS.

Take care,
Jeff

29 y/o EM attending at a Level 1 county hospital
and occasionally still do helicopter shifts

WOW - I'm willing to bet this is the most balanced forum on SDN, and we definitely have the most chill attendings! 😍

My gosh deuist - that list is ALPHABETIZED.

Someone's procrastinating on studying path...

I'm game.

33 YO, newly minted PA about to start my first job in Neurosurgery w/Q every other week trauma call.

Started out as a scrub tech for 6 years, undergrad in medical technology (bloodbankers of the world unite) and EMT-B.

Love this forum for the stories (I miss the box) and I actually manage to learn quite a bit here.

-Mike

You act like that's a bad thing. At least it's not immuno.

Dude - procrastinating on studying path or immuno is almost NEVER a bad thing.

With that said, I'm off to study path today.

28yo male at a military pediatric program. would do peds em in a heartbeat but my current system won't allow it. currently debating whether to "do my time", get out, and do peds EM or to divert my interests elsewhere.

know kungfufishing in real life. 😱 :scared:

member since 2000, lurker for 6 months before that. carry a big stick and have many ongoing research projects on the behavior and and activity of internet messageboard trolls.

Ok, I'll Bite. 35 y/o M, MSIV, with a previous career as a paramedic. I am American by birth, southern by the grace of God (Did I hear someone say something about carolina girls!). I am currently taking a brief respite from the repressive heat and conflict in southern Isreal in an attempt to boost the pizza and beer economy in New York. Set to begin a PICU rotation in two days and seriously considering scrapping an illegible essay known as my "personal statement" for the third time and starting over.

27 y/o male MS IV in Tampa, with a history of being an SDN junkie, c/o how stressful matching into EM will be. But I love EM, I've done 2 rotations at my home school, an externship in Cincinnati (great program!), and about to do one in Jacksonville starting this week. I even have one more lined up but I'm probably going to cancel because this is 4th year and it would be overkill (unless I can get one in the DC area b/c of my girlfriend).

Applying to 34 places, because I don't know where I want to go. DC area, Chicago, Boston, NY, Tampa, and Cinci's program are big on my list.

Here's my $0.02:

Finished up my 5 years of indentured servitude to the navy (hey--no debt) in June, got married, moved one state, relearned how to be a civilian, and started up EM residency down here in the Tarheel State. Biggest challenge thus far has been not calling my attendings sir (most seem very taken aback by it) and learning how to deal with sick patient again....

You are lucky! My school only lets us do 2 rotations in any given specialty in 4th year. Although I understand that if someone's going into peds, IM, surgery, psych, ANY rotation that is mandatory in 3rd year - I think that they should allow the people going into specialties in which you DON'T rotate 3rd year to do one additional rotation. I mean - the IM guys will have 5 months of IM behind them before they graduate. I'll have 2 of EM 🙁. I will probably end up taking a vacation month to do a 2nd away elective early in 4th year.

If you are interested in rotating in DC you should talk to Quinn (excuse me, DRQuinn!) since he's a new attending at the new Georgetown program!

nice, we just admitted a guy last night with a level of 411. i was reading on uptodate and 300-400 should be coma haha.

27 y.o. M, MSII in the lovely South. Twiddling my thumbs until I have to take the next test. Trying to decide if SEC football takes precedent over Step I.

Currently a full-time academic attending and a fellow in medical education at Stony Brook. Yes, is it possible to do both at the same time (more money, less sleep)

Have been advising residents how to get out of bad residencies for three years now...

25 y/o female MSIV in the wilds of Pennsyltucky... submitting my ERAS app for EM tomorrow...

My interests are international health, public health, reading and writing (I have a degree in creative writing from undergrad). I'm originally from New England but my second home is in Africa....

25 yo male MS4, can't wait to match into EM!

Excessive lurker. Infrequent poster. Oldest MS4 so far but you wouldn't know it since I exfoliate and moisturize daily!

Former rock band screamer, lab rat working in experimental agriculture, FF/EMT-P, ED RN.

I am applying to a ridiculous number of programs b/c I can't stand the thought of doing anything but EM.
I want to be just about anywhere south of the Waffle House line. Mountains are a plus.

WOOOHOOO! Waffle House 🙂.

. Mountains are a plus.

I've got your mountains. And they're all green after a month and a half of rains and floods. Some desert.😉

55 yo attending (beat that!) PD for Texas Tech program in El Paso. Fond of scuba, coral, wine making, mountain hiking, advanced statistical models and giving Derek grief.

WAFFLE HOUSE!!!!! And don't forget the glories of the Huddle House. Mmmmm I've had countless numbers of 3am waffles at both of those fine establishments. So good.

Yes, I think we're going to be very good friends 🙂.

You know what I miss? Bojangles.

And Chick-Fil-A.

I can't decide which one I miss more!!

Yet another in a long line of those that discriminate against Waffle Steak😉

Waffle house.. Love it.. Also wanted to let you know that my city is due for an inn n out in the next few months.

28 day old Fetus..
Pgy-1 Originally from Miami now in AZ... GO CANES!!!

27 yo M EM2 at Christ in Chicago

Jack of all trades, master of none...except saving lives (OK, so I'm not a "master" yet, but I'm workin' on it).

I'm into a lot of stuff, but mostly performing/enjoying music, reading stuff by SJ Gould and J Diamond or about RP Feynman...and trying to find errors in Tintinalli.

My favorite patients are the really sick ones, because I know what to do for them. The worried well confound me to no end.

Greatest achievement in life = introducing Fatty McFattypants to this here forum.

30yo WM PGY4, s/p Peds residency, now doing a Peds EM fellowship in the deep South. Procrastinating studying for Peds Boards by playing too much Xbox in my new fellow office. Enjoys spending time with my wife and 2yr old daughter. Loves moonlighting, esp. with our Peds Transport Service and flying in the helicopter.

Peace,
Greg

PS - Also a Waffle House addict.

Alright...I give in and will post.

27 yr. old MS4 in Chicago praying for a match come March 15th. I've finished auditions at Cook County and UCD, heading for my last at Jacobi later this week (1 more month till I can slack off some). ERAS is NOT submitted yet...although my PS are all done (kinda backwards). One of my biggest goals this year is to finally get a chance to SCUBA dive again, it's been almost 4 years since I've gone 😡

28 y/o male, MS IV, currently living in NYC (Forest Hills to be exact), doing a EM rotation at Beth Israel in Manhattan. I'm hoping for an EM residency (i'll get one somewhere! Anywhere! I don't care where...). Applying to MANY programs...casting the net broadly, know what I mean??

I lived in Forest Hills when I was prelim - 68-11 Burns St. (a block from Hatzolah heavy rescue). What street are you on?

EM1, PGY-2 at cook county.

having a good time, though i wish i was an EM-2.

All right, I'll bite

I am a long time user, haven't posted in quite some time.

I am a 28 yo fellow/attending. Doing international EM fellowship and getting my MPH with it. Can't believe I'm back for more school. Did residency in the midwest, and moved out east for fellowship.

In my spare time, I like traveling (duh?), traveling, photography, cooking, watching movies, and lurking on SDN.

Anyways, if anyone has questions about fellowship feel free to PM me.

35 y/o female M2. Former HS teacher and EMT-I (and numerous other jobs).
