So I've decided that I am going to email the dean of the med school that I am on the waitlist for. The problem is I'm having trouble actually writing it. Should I be specific as to why I want to go there or more general and try to kept the email short? Does anyone have any pointers on sending an email to the dean of admissions??

I wish I knew, I wrote an email the other day and still have no idea whether that was helpful or harmful to my status.

i don't think you need to be TOO specific. keep it straightforward and to the point. and yeah i agree i hope this school's your first choice so you can state that.

I *might* also include in the conclusion of your e-mail something along the lines of "I would love to have the chance to speak with you in person more about why i feel I'm qualified to attend XYZ University. If you could contact me at your convienience, i would greatly appreciate it. Thank you so much for your time, i look forward to speaking with you soon"

Just a thought.

It is a tough question...now you'll have me thinking about it the rest of the day.

ive talked/written to many deans throughout the admission process, and here are some of my personal suggestions:

1. be concise. deans are busy and wont read through a 1-2 page letter if it doesnt grab their interest.

2. no fluff. this is related to #1. every word should have a reason for being included.

3. try to tailor your reasons of interest to the specific school, and be specific. dont include stuff like "i really like your school because of the excellent research opportunities!" Be specific as to WHICH research opportunities you are talking about, and why you could not find such opportunities at other schools.

4. Try to get other faculty members to write to the dean on your behalf. Receiving a two-sentence letter from an important faculty member endorsing you may have a lot more impact than you writing a two-page letter yourself, not to mention it is a lot easier.

Hope this helps...

Thanks for the advice. Yes it is my top choice and also the only school that I am waitlisted at so its either this school or reapply. Although this is the one school that I really wanted to go to in the first place. Thanks again.

Don't email. Send a hard copy. Dean's aren't going to go through the trouble of printing the email and placing it in your file. Also, e-mails are too casual a mode of communicating. Either place a phone call or a well-written letter.
