There was once I got a check from CDC for participation in a survey and I thought it arrived rather quickly (Probably not 3 days, but less than a week). I assumed it was from Atlanta, but it may be from elsewhere.

Anyways, Erica's reply to me is as vague as it can be. I was hoping she'll sorta hint at my status, but no, nothing.
 
I just found out Emory has the sixth largest endowment in the nation with over 4 billions dollars (Just behind Havard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, MIT). I hope Emory gives some nice financial packages 😀
When do you think it is good time to find an apartment for this fall? I never had to go find an apartment before.

Did anyone get emails or letters about being on waitlist? I received nothing yet and I fear that it's just a straight rejection.

That e-mail from Erica indicated waitlisters would find out via e-mail this week. Has anyone gotten an e-mail?
 
I interviewed in november and still haven't received any e-mail.
 
okay.. i just got an email now from Emory saying that I have been waitlisted. I'm happy I still have the chance~~~~ 🙄

waitlisted but I'm withdrawing. I'm sent multiple letters showing my interest. If that doesn't do anything, I doubt that additional letters will.

Edit: I really need closure in the process...I'm just exhausted and I don't wanna be worrying about where I'm gonna be next year. Good luck everyone 😉
 
I just got a waitlist email from them too.

It's a little strange considering I sent them a withdrawal letter about 2 months ago.

I got the waitlist email too... although I'm enjoying hearing about everyone withdrawing from it... Everyone, keep dropping it so I can get in! 🙂
 
Did anyone get their financial aid through the opus.emory.edu website? When i checked for my financial status it didn't give me my financial award, it just listed the cost of attendence. The cost of attendance at emory is 54 grand, little higher than expected.
 
OPUS shows the same for me. From what I remember, the awards aren't going to posted until April 1 at the earliest (probably mid April). Also, call the fin. aid office and make sure they've received everything. I just call them and they said they were waiting on my parent's tax returns (which were sent with mine, in the same packet)... They had to go search their files and realized they had overlooked them (the initial lady I spoke with was rude saying that they don't overlook things etc... I had to speak with the supervisor to get anything done).
Just a heads up!
 
Aight. I decided that I'm heading to Emory next year, unless i miraculously get pulled off the waitlist at Cornell or Columbia. Yay~ :clap:
 
Welcome aboard Kwanny! I will see you in July. I just called the financial aid office and they said that they are mailing out the financial award letter this week so you should be receiving them next week. Also they will update your financial award through www.opus.emory.edu
 
Has OPUS been updated for anybody yet? Mine hasn't. So I was just wondering.

My has not been updated either. But I just checked the TO DO LIST site and the financial office stills wants more info on my parents. So make sure you check your TO DO LIST to make sure your financial application is complete.
 
I called financial aid today, and they told me I was currently being processed. I was told to expect something at the end of the week or Monday of next week for my package to arrive by mail.

Thanks for the info! For those who will be attending emory this fall, what are you considering doing for housing? Is everyone going to the housing weekend on June 4-6?
 
if i do finally decide to go to emory, i think i might want to stay in clairmont campus, at least the first year to kind of get used to things. so i'm not sure about the housing weekend...

just what i was thinking...
 
I think that the clairmont campus housing are overpriced. I prefer to live off campus and get an apartment by myself. There are one bedroom apartments that are around 500-550 dollars. But I will probably wait till the housing weekend before I make my final decisions. Did anyone receive their financial aid award letter yet? I have no updates on the opus.
 
I am going to be at the housing weekend. I will probably look for an apartment but I want to go through the Clairmont Campus just to get an idea if it's worth it. I haven't received my award letter yet but, I didn't get my tax forms in until last week.
 
The constant checking can finally stop - my stafford package is posted on OPUS now.

I had a scholarship for undergrad so I'm very unfamiliar with this process. If anyone wants to PM me with ways to evaluate whether or not I should be happy with the offer, I'd realy appreciate it!

buyer beware...there are some cheaper places in the emory area...but some of these places can be extremely crappy (poor security, horrible landlords, no parking, etc) so make sure you check out the places thoroughly. Also, do you guys all have cars? Trust me, if you're living any farther than clairmont, you're going to need one.

Like I said, I am very new to this... by kind do you mean subsidized and unsubsidized? In that case I got both. If not, please clarify and I'll try to answer you. FYI I had all my stuff in the week before the deadline.
 
subsidized loans are where the government pays the interest on that loan as long as you are in school and unsubsidized loans are where the interest is added onto your loan as soon as they are disbursed. Did you not receive any grants from emory?

Hey....I would assume you got both subsidized and unsubsidized stafford/perkins loans. I was mainly wondering if you got any grant money to make cut into the difference between emory's budget and what the stafford maximum is.

I got my financial aid on OPUS.

they're giving me $15,000 in scholarship money, which is more than i expected. but that still leaves $39,000 per year in loans because emory budget this year is a little above $54,000. it's still going to be a tough choice. just letting people know that they're starting to post 'em.
 
johnisit, that seems like a nice package. That means all you would have to take out is stafford loans and no alternative loans. If they give me the same package I would go there. One question though- do we know that our 1st year aid package is going to be the same as years #2-4. I would hate to commit to a school based on the assumption of X amount of grant money, then it be cut in future years?

But if your new borrowing budget is 39k, that seems competitive. MCG's tutition and estimated fees alone for years #2-3 is like 18k already, so the budget will be over 30k there for some years. Of course if you get some money from mcg that would make the difference larger.....

If the Finaid works anything like the ugrad, then your Emory grants are variable year to year based on the forms you fill out- they tend to give out the same amount (occasionally more 🙂 ) unless something changes.

basically, they can change how much you get every year and additionally the tuition rises every year. the grant money depends on your situation and how much grant money they have available. there is a fixed tuition option but i am not sure exactly how it works. 😕

they are pretty fuzzy about budgets. opus says that this is "an average" budget and not the specific budget for 1st year students. looking at financial aid handbook, each year has different budgets since MS1 is 10 months, MS2 11 (etc). So I am not sure if this is just a really conservative budget or an average or what. Last year, MS1 budget was 51000 and MS3 54345 (exactly like this years).
 
I don't really know. I checked mine and I got 17K. My EFC is zero if that helps.

I asked a current emory student about computers especially about using MAC computers and this is what he said:

"You will not have any compatibility issues between a MAC and Emory's System -
it supports both systems equally. You also don't need any special programs to
run the applications that you will receive once you come here.

With that aside, I will say that people with MACs have had a harder time
troubleshooting some of the FLASH and QUICKTIME programs that they had to
install in order to view anatomy slides and x-rays on their computers.
Regardless, some of my classmates do have MACS and they are happy with them,
although at times they wish they had a PC since they are easier to "fix." Of
course, it is your call - either machine will suffice.

I'm a PC user and inherently biased 🙂"

It looks like MAC don't have major compatibility problems at emory. I think I am getting a 15 inch apple power for myself then 🙂
 
I actually ended up getting $17k as well, which is almost half tuition... I think I'm pretty happy with that number. I'm still waiting to see if MCG offers me any scholarship money. However, I can finally say that I'm leaning more towards Emory now.
 
I was hoping, dreaming for some sort of financial aid as well; however I received my financial aid package just the other day - NOTHING.... 8500 in stafford sub and 30,000 in unsub. loans... I don't understand it. The average amount they give out is 20 grand, well i would love to see half of that. They made my decision much more difficult.

now they are saying mine will be processed by tuesday or so. What was your efc? Did you work before applying?
 
I just received my financial aid update through opus and it didn't look good :scared: Got 45000 dollars of loans and no grant money. My EFC was zero! This is making my state school look more attractive.
 
I just got my package... if you call it a package. 38,500 in loans and no scholarship money 😡

What about the rest of Emory's budget? Are you supposed to cover that out of pocket? Because the budget is over $54k. I would call Emory's Fin. Aid. office and see why they didn't give you any grant or scholarship money.
 
38,500 is the most you can borrow in Stafford loans. If I want to borrow more, I would have to go through an alternative loan program with a higher interest rate. I guess they thought my financial need wasn't enough for them to give me money. 👎
 
Here is an update on financial aid. I just talked with the financial office and asked why i didn't receive any grant. The answer is that they ran out of grant money to give! Even though I do demonstrate need, they didn't have grant money to give. So for those who haven't received their financial award letter, don't expect any need-based grant money from Emory. The only hope for us to get grant money is those people who have been awarded grant money decline their acceptance to Emory and then those grant money will be redisturbuted to those who demonstrate need and still holding onto Emory acceptance. Another bad news is that, if you didn't receive grant money your first year then you will most likely not receive grant money for four year. The medical school has a rule where if you didn''t receive grant money first year than they will not give grant money to you again. Since I did demonstrate need and wasn't offered grant money, I have a chance of getting grant money next year but that is only if there is any grant money left after giving everyone, who received grant money these year, grant money next year. So if you received grant money these year you will most likely receive grant money for the next four year. this is kind of confusing, so if you have any questions about it call the financial office or just pm me.
 
So those who received grant money from Emory and are not going to attend, please withdraw as soon as possible! Thanks!!
