Emory vs Tulane IM

Any thoughts on IM residencies at both of these programs? Residents at Tulane seem happier, but I think Emory has better fellowship placement/name recognition...

You have it in your second sentence. Tulane residents are (mostly) happy folk, and if you want to do genmed/clinical education, the training is great. Tulane lost a number of their best specialty faculty after Katrina, so outside fellowship placement isn't as good because they don't have the people that can call up their colleagues to get you a fellowship.

At the end of the day, I don't think Tulane vs. Emory matters unless you are trying to become a bigwig academic cardiologist. If you felt happier at Tulane, I think that answers your question. If people saw my finalized rank list I would be berated lol. The top 6 in my rank list are all programs I would be ecstatic about. Are they the top 6 academic programs on my list, definitely not.

I agree with DVN 100%. My rank list would probably give several people on this forum hives. It's based more on how I felt about the programs than which one is the most prestigious or the strongest academically. In fact, I feel pretty good about the lower rankings I've given some of the stronger programs on my list, just based on my "gut" feelings on interview day.

At the end of the day, you have to live and work with the people wherever you end up. How you feel about your environment is going to influence how well you perform as a resident which in turn will influence your fellowship options.

As long as you're not going to jump off a bridge if you don't get a cards spot at Duke or Columbia you should go where you think you'll be happiest. Quite frankly, the training you get at ~80% of (academic) programs will be as much or more dependent on you than on the name on your ID badge.

Would you rather live in Atlanta or New Orleans? Both of these cities are different and has their own advantages / disadvantages. It is really personal preference to where you would rather live. You will have to live 3 years there, so that should also be a determining factor, not just the "Emory is a bigger name than Tulane". If you would be happier in New Orleans for three years, would you really sacrifice that for the 'bigger name" of Emory?
