*Endo Interview Thread 2007*

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Congrats hdizzile...Boston would be a fun place to live - at least you can moonlight to help pay the bills. See you around.

Congrats to both of you guys. You must have this huge weight lifted off your shoulders. EDL, is Dr. Fouad still running the endo dept?

Anybody caught wind of acceptances announced for the west coast programs??

EDL, is Dr. Fouad still running the endo dept?

Yeah, Dr. Fouad is amazing. I can't wait to work with him. I think it is going to be great. I just need to figure out where we want to live out there.

Anybody caught wind of acceptances announced for the west coast programs??

I was told USC offered acceptances yesterday. I didn't get one though. 🙁

I didn't hear from them either. I wonder how long you have before they need a definite answer?

I'm not gonna lie, the city + the moonlighting pushed me over the edge. Congrats on Maryland I hear Fouad is great and if your interested in those implants thats the place to be I'm told

Has any one heard of " denial " from USC or Saint Louis university ?

Has any one heard of " denial " from USC or Saint Louis university ?

I got all of the USC info second hand, so don't blame me if it's wrong...

USC offered their 10 spots yesterday, with 5 people committing right away, and 5 "thinking about it". Some of the remaining 5 will probably not accept, but who knows.

I interviewed at SLU too. What day did you visit? I haven't heard from them, and don't know anyone else who interviewed there. It's a shame, because I thought that program was awesome. 🙁

I visited SLU on sept 17, monday. I was told that Dr. hatton was gonna go on vacation for a week starting from this monday. So, hopefully we might here from SLU next week.

A fellow classmate of mine received an acceptance from SLU a few days ago and accepted.

Hey Everyone,

just a brief update: I had 3 schools offer a position, and I've accepted a position at Albert Einstein in Philadelphia.

I will keep posting interview invites as they come in (if any) just to keep everyone updated on interview date.

dlux, EDL, OpenMargins, MI Yooper: it was a great pleasure to meet you at those interviews. You are all wonderful people! EDL: I ended up declining Maryland so I guess we won't be co-residents, but we'll be close enough that we can still hang out and we will definitely be meeting in Bethesda for Board review and other meetings.

Everyone on this thread: best of luck! Hopefully everyone will get a position at a good program. Hope to meet you guys at the next AAE meeting!

Cograts Endogirl! Where else were you offered spots at?

Congrats Endogirl. We'll have to keep in touch.

UNC called today. Dr. Rivera was very nice. Their interviews are in early October. I didn't catch the dates, but be aware that they are making calls.

Minnesota and Maryland (where EDL is going 🙂)

Both EXCELLENT programs with wonderful program directors!

Endogirl, how many were interviewed @ Maryland and how many spots were available?

14 people interviewed for 3 spots. Actually, 16 people were invited for an interview, but 2 didn't show, because they had already accepted a position elsewhere.

For those of you who are getting multiple acceptances, are you calling the schools that you are declining, or are you just letting your time expire?

I think you should inform them. It's poor form if you don't! Besides, these people may be your colleagues one day (hopefully soon, right?)

I am so incredibly furious about this whole application process; it would be so nice if endo went through some sort of match.

...and no, you don't really want MATCH...think about it! You can interview plenty and still not match! This way, it's yes or no and you find out within a few days. What may compel Endo to become match soon is that in so many instances people commit to a program and then, once they get something better, they drop out. With MATCH you must go with the program you matched with. Here, if lucky, we're getting to choose between programs...that's a luxury!

MATCH makes it easier for the program director, but it's a waste of time and money for us...especially if you need to resort to post-match, in which instance, you have to look up which programs didn't match, call them up, apply directly...NO WAY!

i was informed by a program director that starting next application cycle, no one gets an offer until nov 1, so that every program has a fair chance of interviewing everyone they want. It is NOT a match.

Yes, you're absolutely correct! I heard the same thing from my dental school. Apparently, schools with a later deadline are presently at a disadvantage, because they may never get to interview their first choice applicants, as these may have already accepted elsewhere.

What I heard is, as of next year, the application deadline will be on Sept 15th (or Aug 15th, can't remember!) and offers of acceptance will all be made on Nov 1st, no sooner!

So I just got the call from UW today- they unfrotunately didnt take me this yr 🙁. Dr. Johnson took one phD, one straight out, and 2 with experience. Just a heads up for next yr's applicants. I wish lots of luck to everyone who are still awaiting decisions.😉

Dates offered for interviews: Week of 9/10-9/14?

No word on Case, But UMDNJ called last week. Sorry I haven't posted it yet.

I went for SLU and USC's interview about 2 weeks back. But Haven't heard from either of them yet. I am pretty sure they would have already offered positions. Is there any way to know if they have denied me position or put me on waiting list ?

I just listened to my phone and received an acceptance to a school. I need time to think because I have 3 more interviews already setup (i.e. flight, hotels, interview dates). How do I ask the school for time to see other programs before I make my decision? Thanks!!

Exactly as you said: that you have a couple more schools that you would like to visit before you can make an informed decision! your flights and hotels are booked and you intend to visit these programs. Just call the school back and let them know by which day you can give them an answer! If you really like the program though (cost of living, location, tuition all considered) is it worth it to visit more programs? If not, and this is really where you want to be, then just take it! Make sure you return the call or at least send a quick email to notify them that you will need some time...you don't want to lose the position! (I ended up declining an invite at the very last minute, if that makes you feel any better about short notice cancellation).

Good luck with your decision.

Thanks for the suggestion. I called today and was pleasantly suprised. I asked how much time do I have to decide. They asked me how much time do I want. They asked me if I was going on more interviews. And I responded yes. And they said that they were happy to let me finish my interviews before I decided. 🙂 I was impressed. Thanks again for the suggestion endogirl.

Awesome! Good for you! If this is a good program and they are confident of that, they will give you a fair amount of time (1-2 weeks) to decide; if they are trying to push you to decide in less than 24 hrs, I would think there's something wrong, wouldn't you? that would seem more of a trap!

Also, no program wants an unhappy resident. They want you, but you also need to want them for the next 2-3 years to make it work. That's the way I looked at it when I was in your situation.

Now you can go on your interviews CONFIDENT, knowing that, no matter what, you've got it!

Good luck and all the best.

Mikediente,

I read the message you sent me and EDL on the other thread re interviewing tips and what these programs seem to be looking for.

It's a tough question, but I'll try...and this is only based on my LIMITED experience with all this, anyway! Maybe EDL has some more ideas that he may want to add...or anyone else who has been interviewing so far.

I think the initial process (before they even invite for interviews) is selecting a limited number of potential candidates (12-20) that are competitive in terms of GPA, class rank, scores, and then research, community involvement, externships... Most of the people that I met at those interviews or that I kept bumping into from one interview to the next, were all great students or former, with class rank in the top 5-10% of the class, with board scores in the mid-high 90's, and 3.8 GPA or above!

HOWEVER, people are granted an interview even though their board scores are not 97 and I met a fair number while interviewing! So, obviously they are looking for more than just high numbers! They want someone who hasn't had their nose stuck in a book for four years! They want a well rounded person, who has taken the time to get involved doing many different things throughout dental school and post. And experience seemed to be the key (private practice, GPR, AEGD) in these situations.

Once I got to the interview, it seemed as though they couldn't care less about our stats. It all came down to: can we work with you, do you work well with others, how can you contribute to this dept, how enthusiastic and passionate are you about Endo. Also, how quickly can you think under pressure! It's more of a personality match that they are looking for at this point.

Some ideas:
If you are still in fourth year, you should get involved with a grad student in Endo to help out with their research project, if you're out of school, contact the Dept and ask to get involved. Even if the research doesn't get published, you still contributed and had a chance to learn from the experience and will be that much better when you need to start your research. Have you done an externship? You should, if you haven't! There are some great ones out there. Are you a member of any association? Do you subscribe to anything? Do you read any scientific journals? These were routine questions at almost all my interviews! Have you done anything for the underserved? Give kids a smile day? Community health clinics? There are plenty of things that you can do to improve your application...it's not just numbers!

There is nothing that can replace experience. Someone who has been in private practice for a few years has the speed and practical knowledge, that a lot of us out of school are lacking and that makes up for a slightly lower GPA or some less desirable score on a silly standardized test. Again, if you’re straight out, consider a GPR or an AEGD, or do GP for a couple of years while you apply, but I would say try a GPR first, apply, then if you still get nothing, then GP.

Did you already go on that interview? How did that one go?

I hope this helped. Again, I have no clue what they are really looking for. I'm just going by what I observed. If you have more questions, keep writing 🙂

MikeTooth,

I'm from Utah and I espeaka a little espanish. Where are you from?

Sorry about the unfavorable outcome with the applications this year. I think that Endogirl is right on with what she's saying. I didn't really ask many people about their stats at the interviews because it seemed a little tacky but from those who I'm familiar with I would say that at least a 93 (bare minimum) on the old style NBDE part 1 is necessary to make the cut for an interview. You definitely have to be top 5-10% rank, but there's something magical about #1 or #2. Almost all of the schools were definitely looking for experience (GPR/AEGD/GP) and I think that I didn't get into most schools because I'm fresh out of school (and maybe I should have showered before my interviews). I think that research experience is something that every solid applicant has to have, but you don't have to cure cancer to have a little research under your belt. The PhD guys definitely have a leg up on this one because everyone wants a resident who can actually run their own research. I don't think that GPA really matters too much except how it affects your rank. Like endogirl was saying though...a couple of years experience or a GPR/AEGD can really make up for not so extraordinary board scores / class rank.

If there's one thing I could say to future applicants (especially fresh out of school) it would be to apply to a ton of schools because I was only accepted at 1 school out of the 7 interviews that I went to and this was not unique. Unless the program director is your Godfather, I would hope for at least 5 interviews to be able to land a spot straight out of school.

Anyway Mike, I hope this helps because it's way too late for me to be up and I think you guys can rest assured that people are being courteous and cancelling interviews etc. just as soon as they have made their decision. I know I did.

Hasta,

EDL

p.s. I wasn't really making fun of my latino brothers with my first comments that were written phonetically...I just figured you'd get a kick out of it.

LuvEndo,

Congrats on the UNC interview. I thought Dr. Rivera was very nice when I spoke to him (and don't worry...I told him that I couldn't come...) I totally understand how discouraging it can be to be going from interview to interview without getting what you really want, but rest assured that everyone is cancelling all of their interviews as soon as they have made their decision.

Best of luck to you. It will all work out.

MikeTooth,

Speaking of tacky, in the hallway people asked about stats, during lunch, in the elevator, at the airport, in the plane for goodness sake!!! Must be the Type A personality, but I'm still trying to recover from the abuse!

Thanks for all your support EDL. I am looking forward to someday meeting you and Endogirl- anyway, if not this yr, there's always next year. As far as applying straight out- here are what I believe the stats are after confirming w/ some faculty and people could agree or disagree, or agree to disagee😀:

Approximately 200 spots in the nation

Endo takes about 30 students staight out/yr

I would agree that you need at least a 93 w/ a stunning CV to be competitive but remember, nothing can replace exp

Finally, I just talked to my mentor and he agreed w/ me that the applicants were extremely impressive this yr compared to prior yrs, so really, Im not fretting if I dont get in, then next yr. But then again, it would be very nice🙂

Good luck to all!

When it comes to your applications one thing that hasn't been stressed is the importance of your personal statement. This is a place you can really distinguish yourself. Last year when I applied to schools my statement was not great and I did not get many interview offers. However with a much improved statement and no other major changes I had offers at about half of the schools I applied to. Another important part of your application are your letters of recommendation. They are not all equal. A couple of my letters were from people who currently involved in admission boards. They have seen hundreds of applications over the years which was likely conveyed in their letters.

Experience is great but experience in a military or public health position is better than private practice. Not to say that GPR's aren't good because many of the people that I interviewed with were currently in GPR's.

Some schools may just look at the ranks and scores etc., but I feel that many schools will interview people in the top quarter. I think that people need to be well rounded with academics, teaching and research experience.

When it comes to interviewing I would recommend seeking someone out in your school who is directly involved in an interview process for admissions. They will be able to give you invaluable advice. I feel that when you enter interviews preparation is important. The first interview I had last year I winged it and I sucked. This year I was much more prepared. I had a list of questions to ask. I made sure to express my passion for endo and was much more confident as a result.

For those of you applying as a fourth year student. I know you really want to get in and will be extremely disappointed if you don't. The good news is that if you don't get in this time you will have a year of experience that you will cherish. In my opinion your transition into a residency will be easier not only due to speed, but also due to your decision making ability.

Although these numbers do help, I can speak from experience they are incorrect. A 90+ part 1 score and top 25% of your class is enough to keep you competitive straight out of school(it got me 2 acceptances before the month of october[not trying to brag, but just making a point]). Like MI Yooper said its the intangibles that get you the position(C.V.,LOR, P.S.......). Some schools are about numbers, but most schools know the majority of applicants can hang with the program, but they have to filter out the applicants some way. You just need to find your own unique method to make sure your application gets a double take. The application process is a cruel game....think it out and play it well. Good luck to all
