Although these numbers do help, I can speak from experience they are incorrect. A 90+ part 1 score and top 25% of your class is enough to keep you competitive straight out of school(it got me 2 acceptances before the month of october[not trying to brag, but just making a point]). Like MI Yooper said its the intangibles that get you the position(C.V.,LOR, P.S.......). Some schools are about numbers, but most schools know the majority of applicants can hang with the program, but they have to filter out the applicants some way. You just need to find your own unique method to make sure your application gets a double take. The application process is a cruel game....think it out and play it well. Good luck to all

I agree that you need to write a solid personal stat. and have a stellar CV, but I was told by many instructors that LORs don't really mean much...who's going to write a bad letter for you? If you're asking someone it's because you trust that they'll write good things about you, and if they didn't think highly of you, they would refuse to write one!

Perhaps it's about WHO (contributions and impact in the specialty) is writing the letter, but not the CONTENT! They all say the same things over and over, I think.

I couldn't agree with you more, a director told me the same thing.

I don't think that there are cut and dry numbers for most programs. I know of people that got into endo programs with less than a 90 on part 1 straight out of school and they were at best in the middle of their respective classes. They were pretty cookie cutter people too. If you want to do endo and you're in school you should apply. Do not do a GPR and then apply. Do apply to endo and GPRs, and if you don't get in then do a GPR and try again. Every year you're in private practice apply and keep trying it until you get in. I don't understand the concept of doing GP for 5 years and then apply when one has wanted to do endo since dental school. The more programs that you apply to and the more times you apply the better chances you have. It's as simple as that. Even if you have a mediocre package it's still worth applying because there is always a chance, even though it may seem like more than a longshot.

I am going for an interview in Minneapolis, anyone has any info on interviews in U of M ?

Hey everybody--It's finally over. I accepted a position at Penn for the endo certificate program. Good luck to everyone else. Endogirl, I'm sure we'll have some seminars and such together in Philly, so that should be fun.
Dlux, haven't heard from you lately, how's it going?

Congratulations endoking. I'm glad to hear you got a spot, although after meeting you, I never had a doubt. Philadelphia is a great city. But watch out for the cheesesteaks...😉

All is good on my end. Wrapping up my practice sale in the next few weeks, and I have three more interviews scheduled(one this week, one next and one more after)so hopefully I'll know something for sure in the next few weeks. There are a few more programs I'm waiting to hear from, but the sooner this is over, the better. I'll keep you all posted on my progress.

Welcome to the Penn family.

Congrats to you as well Endogirl. We consider Einstein our sister program.

Congrats endoking for your acceptance. I'm going to U penn for interview in few days. I was wondering if you still remember some of the questions from your interview. things they like, don't like, what are they focusing on ??? etc.
I appreciate your input.

I appreciate your input.

Here are the three questions I was asked--1) What do I need to know about you? 2) What else do I need to know about you? 3) Is there anything else I need to know about you?

All the other discussion was a result of my answers to those questions, so good luck.

Endofan,

I am going to be there this coming Tuesday, the last day of interviews. And you? Hope I get to meet you and Apico.

As for Endoking, lets face it, you could have almost accepted at any school my friend- I think you and Endogirl made a great decision🙂.

Hope that Endofan and I bring it home for all you guys!!! I'm real excited, whatever the result may be.

Good luck to those of you who are interviewing here. Please feel free to ask the residents any questions you may have. We're happy to help

It's such a huge relieve to finally be over with everything. I will have to say this application process has been difficult where you have to make last minute decisions. I'm glad it is finally over though. =) =) =)

Got back from my UCLA interview. Really stressed research as a few of the interviewers were bigwigs in the research field there. Felt like I was on top of a bunsen burner for a while. Program director, clinical director and other interviewers were very nice and extremely cordial. Overall the program was strong. Hopefully I didn't get flambeed too much. Don't know when they are calling for spots. If they already did, I didn't hear from them. 😱

Congrats to all you guys who got acceptances. MikeDiente, do you know if USC filled all of their spots? And any info if UCSF is still interviewing? Good luck to all the rest!

Hey guys, I got accepted to Penn and U of Florida and I accepted at Florida. I think Penn is a great school though and I would have been very happy there too. It would have been fun meeting all you guys up in philly but I am sure we will meet at the AAE stuff eventually. I called Penn already too to let them know.

Did Baylor already notify people of acceptance? Anyone hear anything?

Yes, Baylor notified people shortly after the interview date. As far as I know there will be four incoming residents.

Thank you Endoking for your info. wish me luck.
LuvEndo, I will be there on Monday, unfortunately I wont be able to see you. I'm hoping that we both will make it. good luck.
I was wondering how did U penn offered positions before finishing thier interviews??

They normally offer on a rolling admission

Endofan,

Two very qualified people w/ stellar applications (one being EndoKing!) have accepted. There are at the most 6 spots remaining assuming Dr. Kim has not called anyone else.

Let the thread know if you have anymore questions.😉

HEY DUDE
I DON'T KNOW IF USC ALREADY FILLED THE SPOTS. YOU CAN CALL THE DEPARTMENT THOUGH,. VERY NICE PEOPLE THERE.
GOOD LUCK

MIKE

Jugga--Congrats on the UF acceptance! Do you know if UF filled all their spots already?

Thanks, as far as I know they did a round of interviews back on sept. 20th and another on the 4th and 5th. They said that would be all of the interviews and would be letting us know ASAP.

If anyone was wondering, St Louis U notified about a week ago, UT Houston notified 2 days ago, and UCSF will notify this Monday.

Program: Temple Endo
Mode of Invite: Phone call from Secretary (Pamela)
Date(s) offered for interviews: 10/11

Its interesting how Temple gave me an interview once they found out I had interviewed at PENN and was still in town. 🙄 Just comes to show you PENN's incredible reputation. As always, Ill keep everyone posted as they wind down to the final decisions for the year and for the sake of everyone applying next year.

Dear everybody,

Please visit " Endo Interview feedback 2007 " thread and give your reviews on how your interview went and/or your take on pros and cons of that program. This is really informative thread that would be helpful to your future colleagues. Thanks

Got the email today from Maryland, looks like they had some fall off the wagon and they're scrounging. Interview was scheduled for Oct. 24th. I declined as I've already accepted somewhere. Good luck to those of you still out there on the circuit, it's a cruel game to be in but it's definitely not over yet so don't lose hope.

Ellsworthpeck,

I know what you mean. According to what a endo resident told me today, 95% of spots in the nation have been filled for this yr. I'm happy to hear Maryland is one of the very few schools remaining (bu is another), since its a considerably good program (I didnt get the call for Maryland). To those (including me very possibly) applying next year, keep your head up- we will all be Endodontists sooner or later!

Luv Endo,
Have you heard anything from U penn? I have'nt.
Also any input from people went to lutheran medical center interview ??

My fellow classmate just got accepted on thursday at penn and will be going there. He also attended lutheran med interview, he said there were nice perks like a stipend but liked penn better.

Hey Jugga!

I met your classmate on the same day I was interveiwing that day. He was a real nice, bright guy. I guess you can say we were competing for the same spot. Even after being notified of my rejection from the secretary, I am still proud to say that PENN is easily #3 or #4 in the nation, hands down.

I have to thank Dr. Kim for such an intense interview, cuz he taught me things about myself that I really never knew. He is trully one of the best interviewers ever, and I am being VERY HONEST when I say that!

I really hope everyone who really wants to get in, gets in this year! Ill definately keep everyone posted if I hear anything else🙂

I interviewed at Penn and didn't like it at all.
The clinic looks like it's from the 70s.
Dr. K has a rep for making residents cry during their presentations.
Philly sucks.
It's way too expensive.

I interviewed there and didn't like it either, but I think you're dramatizing a bit. The clinic does look old, but they have microscopes in each op and all the necessary equipment. Perhaps Dr. K has a rep for making residents cry, I don't know... but he also has a reputation as one of the finest endodontists and educators in the nation. Tuition cost is high, but in the big picture, tuition is chump change compared to future income. If I had been accepted there, I would have STRONGLY considered it, despite the drawbacks.

Elipar,

I think you nailed it there with that response- but its more than just monetary gain. The name of PENN ENDO (or any PENN program for that matter) IS HUGE on the outside. Residents get worked for 2 years but get to live in luxury and international reputation the rest of their lives.😎 Thats why Ill for sure be applying to PENN again next yr.

What's so funny? Am I right to say you didnt get in either? That makes the fifty of us who interviewed there and were denied acceptance😀

Come on guys! There's no need to start getting nasty, especially now, that we're at the end. Let's try and keep this professional.

Just an opinion: it's not the "era" 🙂 an operatory was built in, that defines how strong a program is. If the bench top happens to be red, but you get a nice wall mounted microscope in each room and you don't need to share a room with a co-resident, walk your pt down the hall for radiographs, and you get an incredible amt of cases sx and non, that's all that matters. Look at San Antonio: I have seen better and prettier operatories than theirs, and yet how does the school rank in the nation?

And...coming from a school in the ghetto, I can definitely say that it was the location of my school that has allowed me to get the training and experience that I did get. If the school was located in the pretty suburbs, how many RICH people would go to a dental student or resident to get tx, if they can go to the 25 yr experience doc down the road and afford to pay double for tx?

Good luck to everyone still interviewing!

aw.. c'mon 😛🙂

If I didn't take a jab at that "luxury and international reputation" comment somebody else would have.

Sure, there are some programs that have a stronger reputation than others, but it's largely the individual that makes the endodontist, not the program. An accredited endodontic program is an accredited endodontic program. There's no way that getting accepted to a specific program sets a person up for life in a given field the way you spoke of it.

I agree wholeheartedly with OpenMargins. Certainly, if I had a chance to go to San Antonio, I'd have gone without hesitation. But to say that going to a specific school will set you up for life seems a bit of a stretch. Great programs turn out great residents as well as chumps. Average programs turn out great residents and chumps as well. I suspect that after we graduate, no one will ask which school you went to, but will evaluate you based on performance.

P.S. I didn't get in to Penn. But I still think the program is very good.

Closing on my practice sale, taking a few weeks off, associating for a few months, getting our house ready to sell, selling our house, packing up, moving. Should be a quick eight months!

Anyone know anything about Manhattan VA interviews? Are they started yet/if not when? Thanks

Any word on the Univ. of Alabama @ Birmingham?
