Hello all,

I am currently a D2 finishing up third semester and I’ve found that I would love to pursue a speciality in Endodontics.

The problem is that I struggled mightily during the first year of dental school (not because of academic ability, but due to personal issues: close death in the family, battled depression, etc.) to the point I almost dropped out. I pushed through, but ended up near the bottom of my class. I have improved during 3rd semester but will still sit around a 2.5 and at best will still be in the bottom third.

I never thought my low GPA and class rank would be a be a problem, but my school doesn’t start Endodontics until October of the third semester and I have loved it far and beyond any other area of dentistry. I received an A in anterior Endo lab (posterior is after Christmas) and want to explore specializing.

Since I’m only a D2 and Endodontics isn’t a huge area of emphasis at my school, I am completely unaware of what it takes to do Endo.

I’ve come to terms with the fact I’ll need a GPR, a few years experience, and will probably need to take the ADAT and do well. But I’m seeking brutal honestly to know is it even possible for me to pursue Endo?? Or am I completely wasting my time?

Additionally, what kind of GPRs and Endo programs should I focus on with a lower GPA/rank? Private schools? Veterans Affairs? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

You never know till you try. Ya an AEGD or GRP is pretty much a requirement for endo res so look there first. Do the best you can with what you got. I was nowhere near the top of my class, got into AEGD and now going into perio. Anything is possible.

A former associate of mine started his Endo residency last summer. He worked 6 years as a general dentist before that. He was at the lower end in his class rank when he graduated from dental school. So Endo residency is more about your experience than your grades.

Did that former associate work all 6 years in a private practice setting or did he do GPR/hospital dentistry also? I am interested in Endo but I want to work in private practice straight from dental school for a few years first instead of doing a GPR, due to financial reason.

No GPR. 6 years of general dentistry practice, 4 of them at my practice.

Probably at an expensive private program right. Like the million dollar ortho thread.

Still very competitive at state programs.
Yes. $100k + cost of living + compounding interest. Tuition and fees will go up from year 1 to year 2 as well. He will probably graduate with $250-300k.

Is it possible to work full time while doing these residencies?

A lot of programs do not allow you to work while in the program. You would have no time to work while in an endo residency anyway as it is a full time job. You would have Saturdays and sundays available.

Question as of when to apply, I am a new D4 student and I have applied to GPRS and AEGDs between d3 and D4. When is the best time to apply for endo? At the end of my D4 year or after I’m already in my GPR/AEGD program?
