What do some schools mean when they say they require "english" classes as pre-med requisites?

Does this mean any class from the English department? Or is there an English 101 class that you're supposed to take?

I'm an engineer, so I know nothing of these "electives" everyone talks about.

Do English Lit classes count?

Aim for something that sounds writing intensive in the English department. It doesn't have to be Composition 101, but stay away from courses like film studies. Literature is almost always acceptable.

Take a years worth of classes taught by the English department. Other classes might satisfy requirements, but it'll be much less of a headache if you take 2 semesters of English classes.
