EVMS Decisions

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.

good news for one of you out-of-state white males. i am defering for a year so someone should be getting a call in the next few days. good luck. see ya next year.

Good luck with whatever you're doing, Gray.

and thanks for opening a spot.

ok, so when I call the office I always get told that I'm in different thirds. One week it's top then it's middle (which by this point, should technically not be happening since no new people are being added to the list)...

so I got to thinking and what if "top third" and "middle third" are code words. as in, "top third" means that the waitlist is moving pretty quickly and you should hear something soon and "middle third" means that the waitlist is not moving as quickly and so the adcoms just tell you "you are middle third" so you aren't waiting by the mailbox everyday...

I know it really doesn't matter what those words mean and how the system actually works--but I guess I'd prefer some sort of logic while I wait

thoughts? 😕

Too much speculation to figure out exactly what the whole "thirds" thing means... I just say, If you're in a "third" you're still on the waitlist, that's all you can actually know.

Thankyouthankyouthankyouthankyouthankyou! 😀

I hope one of us gets the good news soon (and then the rest of us get more good news soon after) 😉

i just talked to the admissions office and they said our "1/3" was based on our interview points..and that we can't do anything to get off. I have sent letter of intents to EVMS..but is there any point to do anymore?

When i called, the secretary said if you have a genuine interest in attending you shoud arrange a phone appointment with Dean Solhaug...I dunno if this only for those who hold EVMS as their top choice though...good luck everyone :luck:

Here's hoping that a letter comes for somebody this week from EVMS :luck:

C'mon 7 Leaf Clover, do your stuff!

Yeah, I quoted myself.

But I still need that 7 leaf clover to do its thing.

Good luck all!

Hi all:

Just wanted to say best wishes to all who are still waiting to hear from EVMS. I am waitlisted there (middle third). However, since we are expecting our second child in mid August, I have not pushed hard to get off the waitlist.

Actually, does it really help to push hard (e.g, write LOI, call frequently) to get off the waitlist?

I am very interested to re-apply to EVMS in 2007. Unfortunately, I will apply a late - I am re-taking August MCAT. I still hope I get an interview from them.

Getting waitlisted this year doesn't give me any higher chance of getting an interview for next year - does it?

Take care and best wishes as always.

S.

I'm a reapplicant. I've interviewed and been waitlisted at EVMS twice. Didn't play this game as hard as I should have last year.

But my first go round, I was an August MCAT, so you'll definatly have a shot. I did have a late interview if I recall correctly. (March or something)

As for being on the waitlist this year, I would expect it to help you somewhat and I would mention it on your secondary. But that's only speculation.

but see, what's hard enough?? and what's too hard?? i get the feeling from some adcoms (personal experience) that the best thing you can do is just wait it out and be patient... i hate this game 👎

Well at least one White MOOSe got in (Murphomatic from the miracle thread) but it looks like it was back at the end of February?

Congratulations and hopefully there are more to come for the rest of us.

I think Depakote mentioned elsewhere in this thread that it seems from last year that they notified by mail up until the middle of June and then after that, with decreasing time, they tend to call ... but what do I know 😛

I found out that I was accepted off the wait list via snail mail when they sent the letter, along with instruction forms on what to do next and the health/immunization record form. No e-mail notice or phone call prior to the letter.

Good luck to everyone! :luck:

I'd go ahead and apply, they're pretty friendly to out-of-staters in general, just don't expect any tuition breaks.

I will be an M2 at EVMS come August. 37 out of my class of 110 are non-VA residents, myself included, and at least three of my classmates are from Cali. So it would probably be worthwhile for you to apply.

congrats! you definitely deserved it...the wait just made it so much sweeter, huh 😀 and thanks 😳

Shuzee,
You should definitely apply if you're interested. According to the fact book 8.2% (9 total people I would bet) of matriculants in 2005 were from California alone. So it sounds like the school gives out-of-staters a fair chance.

And sgrnspc, Congrats 👍 You earned it!! That's a great way to kick off the holday weekend!!

Congratulations sgrnspc!

Come on big envelopes 😀 - good luck this week everyone :luck:

I was accepted this morning. I am an in-state male.

Depakote, I'm hoping you get in; it was good to meet you at Preview Weekend, and I'd like to have you as a study partner.

Good luck to everyone. Keep up the good work.

I appreciate the support. I can honestly say, I'd love to be studying with pretty much everybody in this thread come August.

On Friday, I called to set up a phone conference with Doc Solhaug. His secretary told me to call him this morning, that he had good news. I called, and they gave me the good word.

I did a lot of things to try and improve my standing on the waiting list. First, I sent them pictures of my earthquake relief trip to Pakistan. I then sent them my abstract that was accepted to a research symposium, plus the poster presentation that I did there. Interestingly, during my interview and afterwards, they were really interested in the fact that I played in a touring rock band fulltime, so I sent them the cd that we recorded (www.thehint.com) as well. Finally, I sent them some electron microscopy images from work (http://www.mc.uky.edu/cls/ko/default.htm).

The point is that I sent them as much stuff as I could with some substance, as opposed to repetitive letters of interest. But I did some of that, too.

Again, good luck everyone. I hadn't contributed anything to this thread before today, but I have been reading (stalking) all of what you have said. Hopefully we'll all be classmates this year!

Just curious: Did you send photos in the mail? Email? Or a link to an online album?

Fluke, I gotta hand it to ya. That's exactly how you do it. You went about it the way you have to and did what you had to do to get in. Congratulations, and I look forward to meeting you in the fall. When I was in waitlist limbo this time last year, hardly a moment went by that I wasn't thinking about how I could get off the wailist. My EVMS story went like this: interview invite late Dec 2004 for late Jan 2005, thank you cards/letter of interest to committee, attended preview weekend late March (wasn't invited, but called and asked if I could attend), more letters of interest, phone conference w/ Dr. McCombs in early May, more letters, in-person appointment w/ Dr. McCombs in early June (flew up from out of state to shake his hand, sit w/ him in person for 5 minutes, and hand him a bound copy of my graduate thesis, essays, etc.)...followed up with more letters, June/July - had a unique and novel idea - sent them in and really got noticed, more calls/emails/letters...I left no stone unturned. Then at long last, a phone call from Sue in late July. I was finally in.

I would strongly encourage anyone who really wants to go to EVMS to think long and hard about why you want to go here, why you are unique, what you could offer to the class, and find a way to demonstrate that. That is exactly what I did, what flukemcd did, and what others before us have done to get in here. Best of luck.

^That is of course if you arent rebuffed from an interview. I emailed Dr. Solaug on Thursday to try and set up an interview for this week or next but I was told that he was on vacation starting today, but yet he was able to conduct an interview, why dont they just come out and say that Im rejected 😡.

wow...you really went all out. Ive sent many letters and have made phone calls expressing my interest to EVMS admissions office but I don't really have anything else to send in. I was told that setting up a phone app to speak w/ Dr. Solhaug one on one was essential to letting them to know just how interested you are, but I didnt know if this was only for people who hold EVMS as their top choice...I really loved it over there (except for Norfolk but I guess I could used to it) but EVMS is not my top choice at this moment...even tho I should take whatever I can get at this point bc i dont have any acceptances. Its funny how you can either get accepted outright during the application yr w/o having to go out of your way to express interest, but if you are waitlisted you have to go above and beyond to be accepted....

Yeah, I can see how it would be tough to try and go all out if you aren't sure you want to go there. I went into my interview at EVMS not sure what to expect, but they basically echoed my philosophy about medicine and I was more than sold.

I applied to only two schools, EVMS and Temple. The reason that I applied to these was because of their reputation as having a certain inextricability with their communities; the need for service is becoming more and more salient as the players in medical provision seem to become increasingly profit-driven. This is obviously a complicated issue, but the point is that I liked the things that I heard EVMS does in their community, relayed to me not only through EVMS itself but through anecdotal evidence from people I've talked to in that community.

Thanks for your kind words about my acceptance. The waitlist movement (sounds like a kind of revolution or something) is nowhere near over.

I didn't talk to Solhaug today, bro. I talked the admissions office only. Sorry for the confusion. He is on vacation.

Can I send more than three LORs to this school?/

thanks guys for the congrats!! i can't wait to see the others that have been accepted in august.

for those still waiting, please have hope. i hope to see all of you in the fall as well. remember that evms really looks beyond the stats to your dedication. good things will happen :luck: :luck:

(btw, i'm instate female, for the person that asked)

Hey everyone, I deferred my admission so I'll see you guys next year. My spot is now open (in state, female), so good luck! :luck:

Kinda weird that this is the EVMS thread, but that's okay. I can't believe it. I'm in a state of shock. Good shock I think, but shock nonetheless.

I will be withdrawing from EVMS's waitlist (and VCU, MUO and Tulane too) because GW here I come!!!

And I hope you all get into EVMS!
