Hey guys, I completed med masters this past year and will be going somewhere else for med school. I have some things I'd like to sell before I leave. PM me if you are interested. If you're in Norfolk already, you can stop by and look in person(I live right next to school). Otherwise I can send pics.

1. White couch
(bought new from Ikea 1 year ago, seats 2 people, has been barely used)

2. Futon frame
(I use it as a frame for my queen mattress, looks better than box-spring, like brand new)

3. Clicker
(you will need this for embryo lecture during 1st semester to answer quiz questions for participation points, I believe it costs $45-50 if you buy from the bookstore, will sell for considerably less)

Also, feel free to PM me if you have any questions about the program.

Does anyone know if the orientation packet has gone out yet???

any1 down for having a lil med masters get together the weekend b4 classes start??

to the above, most certainly. Might i suggest the fbook group as a place to coordinate as well as here perhaps.

To dr midlife and other new grads of the program. Can we set up direct deposit when we arrive in town before orientation? if so, how do we go about it (go to office of financial aid I am assuming). Also, for the loans, after completing the master promissory notes can we do our entrance interview on the same site as it shows, or is this something that we must wait to do during orientation as I see there is time blocked off for this purpose? Given that the loan funds are needed for rent it would be beneficial to receive the funds asap and if doing the entrance interview now expedites the process as opposed to orientation I think I would like to go that route. Any helpful comments regarding this are much appreciated, thanks.

I didn't graduate - I took a leave before the end of first semester last year. I'll be back to start the program over. Long story, not that interesting.

Here's the info from the student portal:
EVMS is now offering direct deposit for financial aid credit balance refunds. If interested, please complete a direct deposit form and send to Accounts Receivable, suite 307, Smith Rogers Hall. For more information please contact Karen Kroll at [email protected].
From the admin's perspective, the money that makes it to you after tuition & fees are paid is your "refund."

I suggest waiting until orientation.

Doing the entrance interview early won't speed up disbursement - med masters are handled after the med students. Definitely don't plan on getting money right away. I didn't get money until September 5 last year. You can get a short term loan to see you through - go see the financial aid office during orientation. I think you can borrow $500 or something.

Hi everyone!!

I just got the call that I'm off the waitlist and accepted!!!!! Talk about best surprise ever... except now I'm rushing to get everything in order. I've seen some posts about people looking for roomies, anyone out there still need one? I know it's really late in the game but if so please PM me!! I went to UF for undergrad but actually grew up in VA Beach, so I'm pretty familiar with the area.

Congrats to everyone who got in, and see you all in a couple weeks! Eeek!

P.S., is the facebook group mentioned above just for the MD class??

fbook group above is for SMP only (feel free to join), there is also an MD group I believe (which could be a good spot to roomie search as mentioned previously as it will have more members.)

Exactly - I talked to the financial aid office recently, and apparently funds cannot be disbursed to new students until they have officially matriculated (i.e. filled out all the forms they give you during orientation and take the entrance interview), so you're looking at the end of orientation week at the earliest, and probably a good bit longer. The emergency loans are a good option for paying rent, but try to have enough money on hand to live for a month without financial aid.

I'm up for that! I just got accepted recently and moved in, I'll be down there at the end of next week 🙂 I posted something in the facebook group, anyone who is interested feel free to message me and we can get something going.

Lets get in some relaxing time before the studying begins

A pregame for tomorrow night has been planned, see the fbook group for details.

I have a question. I read somewhere in this thread that evms masters admission only look at your gpa from undergraduate institution and do not average your postbac gpa. Is this true?

Incorrect. Undergrad is undergrad: your postbac gets averaged in with your "regular" degree GPA. Same goes for med school admissions.

Know what's great about EVMS? October. The humidity is gone, the trees are changing colors, it's sunny and moderate, folks sit out on their porches in the evenings in the old row house neighborhoods in Ghent. I love this part.

Hey everyone, so I am going to be applying EVMS Med Masters program for Fall 2011, and I cannot apply until March 1st because I am taking my MCAT in January (get score March 1st), and I was just wondering how late in the cycle is this, and if anyone knows when/how they fill the seats...

Also, will applying from CA hurt my chances a lot? Is the program mostly for VA residents?

Thanks!

Good luck on the MCAT. I recommend having your app ready to go except for your MCAT score, and submit immediately when you get the score. This is definitely a program where you want to be ready for med school before you start the SMP, so I recommend acting like you're doing AMCAS.

The med masters class list is volatile from late January up until the last minute - last year there was an admission the week before school starts.

The class is about half Virginians, half out-of-state.

Best of luck to you.

Anyone start applying for Fall 2011 yet?

Also, does anyone know if we can use our AMCAS committee letter instead of three individual letters of recommendation?

Thats a good question, and I have no idea (sorry). E-mail Leah Solomon and she'll probably get back to you on Monday. I didn't go to a school that did committee letters, but can't you have the school send the individual letters to grad schools for you? I can't imagine they wouldn't have a mechanism for this. Not everyone is applying to AMCAS.

And I definitely recommend that you get your app in as soon as possible. If you get it in late (like I did), you'll almost certainly be sitting on the waitlist.

Yea, I think they can do that, just don't know how good my letters are without my advisor's buffer. Do you think applying the first few weeks in January when the Spring semester starts is too late? EVMS is def my first choice SMP.

Well it certainly won't hurt to ask if you can use your committee letter. And January is fine - I just waited until almost the deadline which is not a great idea.

Hey all! I also am applying to this program. I'm just wondering for everyone in the program now, how has your first semester gone?! And how difficult did you find it to beat the med school average? Thanks! So excited about this program.

If I'm taking my MCAT 4/16 and the appz deadline is due 4/1, will I still be considered if I submit my appz (w/o MCAT scores yet) prior to the deadline?

It's really hard work. Which is what it's supposed to be. The other 20+ med masters students tend to be really helpful and supportive. The faculty tend to be really supportive. The M1's are pretty helpful too. The exam schedule is set up really well, so that if you do poorly on your first exam it doesn't ruin your grade and you have time to figure out how to do better.

I think it works well to come here with the attitude that your career depends on your exam scores. It works well to eliminate distractions. It works well to try everything and keep trying. It works well to snoop a little, find out who got an A, and interrogate them about how they're studying. It also works well to not keep trying to use a study method that isn't working. A good example of this is using the textbook vs. not using the textbook. If you can get A's on exams by memorizing the syllabus, then memorize the syllabus and don't buy the textbook. If you can get A's on exams by using the textbook, then that's good money spent.

What I'll be working on with some of my classmates next semester is doing a better job of layering and being ready early. Everybody says they're going to avoid exam cramming, but we all ended up doing it. Next semester, with 3 brutal classes and a paper to finish, I'm going to give it another shot, meaning I won't study to the deadlines, I'll just freaking study freaking everything all the freaking time.

Gotta tellya, it's a great feeling to come out of an exam knowing I did well. The sheer volume of material being tested will blow your mind, and finding yourself up to the task is quite a thrill.

Lastly, as everywhere, there's never a shortage of things to complain about. If you focus on the problems or inefficiencies in the teaching or the syllabus or the slides or the lab exercises or the hallway flooring, you're wasting time. The material is completely standardized, and it's just not that hard to figure out what you're supposed to do.

Best of luck to you.

I don't think you're in a good situation. At best, somebody with a complete app (decent GPA, decent MCAT) who applies against the deadline is applying for a spot on the waitlist. The program gets thousands of apps for 20-23 seats. This is going to be the case with all the good SMPs.

Can you look into doing more undergrad next year, possibly in lieu of doing an SMP, or to get yourself in a better position to do well in an SMP and then in med school?

I also want to encourage you to take the MCAT when you're ready to get your best possible score. For MD/DO apps, April is a great time. For SMPs, you have more time (September is great, January is as late as you want to go).

Best of luck to you.

I see. That's quite a bummer 🙁

DrMidlife: Is it a hyperbole when you say the EVMS program receives thousands of applications per year? If not, do you know approximately how many applications the EVMS program receives every year? Thank you.

Wasn't exaggerating, but now that I'm called on it of course I'm doubting my memory. I've asked the program director on a couple different occasions and I'm remembering he said "thousands". I'll confirm when school's back in session.

Hey everyone! I'm from Michigan like many of you and will also be applying to EVMS Med Master's program for Fall 2010. I noticed that some people were already on waitlists and everything, but, just to make sure, you guys are not talking about Fall 2010 semester, correct?

Also, how difficult is this program to get into? My cGPA as of right now is 3.04 (hopefully 3.1 when I graduate next semester) and sGPA is 2.94 (hopefully 3.04 when I graduate). (Taking MCAT in about a month, avg about 32 on practice exams, good LORs, and decent EC). Am I wasting my time in applying here with these stats? I really want to go here, but I don't want to get my hopes up....

Thank you for all of your help, guys. 🙂

Hey stolenidentity, I believe you're taking about starting the program in fall 2011

I have similar questions about evms program - what should I expect while applying here
Medmasters program @ evms is my top choice and I would absolutely love to go here. I don;t know what my chances are of being accepted to this great program.

Here are my stats:
cG.P.A: 3.94
sG.P.A: 3.95

Mcat scores -- 2009 07 VR, 08 PS, 10BS (25)
2010 07 VR, 10 PS, 09 BS (26)
best sections add up to 27

some research
dean's list
volunteer work (worked with aids patients, violoence against women, fund raising for earth quake victims)
physician shadowing (neonatologist, peds, cardiology, internal medicine)
scholarship winner
excellence in undergrad organic chem award - american chemical society
tutored Genetics, O.chem, Microbio, Physics
bio club president
chem club member

For the love of all that's holy don't spend $50,000 on an SMP with that GPA. An SMP won't do a thing to counter your MCAT score. All you do in med school and beyond is take day-long board exams that make the MCAT look like Sudoku.

Seriously: tell me about your MCAT prep. Tell me what you did between takes. Tell me why you think you can't get a better score if you go after it like your career depends on it (which it does). Is English your 2nd language? PM me if you don't want to broadcast it. I want to help.

EVMS SMP is great, sure, but you could get a part time job, spend $1500 on a prep course, get hellbent for a 30+ score, and then you could get into any school you want - including EVMS. If you're a Virginia resident and you just want to get into med school and not have to take the MCAT again, I see your point. But it's a mistake to think the MCAT is just the MCAT - what are you going to do for boards?

Sigh. I'd give a kidney for that GPA.

Nobody has been accepted to EVMS SMP for Fall 2011 yet.

If you get a strong MCAT then you have a reasonable chance. Give it all you've got. Make sure to indicate what else you're doing to make sure you're ready for the rigors of med school - more upper div science this spring?

Best of luck to you.

I am also from MI and am a current med master who was accepted into the program (after a short stint on the waitlist) with a 3.01cGPA and less than for science if you believe it, with a 33mcat however, so if you score in the low/mid 30s i have to feel you have quite a good chance of acceptance.

what about right under 30, like a 29, with a higher gpa?

what about right under 30, like a 29, with a higher gpa?

I know of others in the program with mcats in that range as well and a higher gpa to compensate is certainly of great benefit. But, as mentioned above, gpa's over 3.6ish id say would be better served with higher mcats after a retake vs a program designed to offer redemption to those with low gpa's, not people with high gpa's and low mcats.

anyone know about how long it takes EVMS to make a decision about an application?

Best case for getting accepted: end of January.
Worst case: end of the first week of August.

When I got accepted it was a big envelope.

There's been no change in the faculty that review the apps.

Also: the SMP gets hundreds, not thousands, of apps, to correct my assertion earlier. Last year the SMP got around 500 apps, and the MD program got around 5000 apps.

Best of luck to you.

Hi All! I 'm generally just a lurker around SDN but had to sign in to post on this thread. I just got my acceptance to this program last week and will be attending for Fall 2011.

My initial application was submitted 12/25, complete 1/12 (Recommendations took a while getting there), and offered 1/19 so one week exactly in terms of turn around time.

I didn't receive the FedEx package that you all received, but an email with my admissions offer. Leah Solomon gave me a call the next day to make sure that it hadn't been delivered to my spam folder or something and make sure I knew that I had 10 days to accept the offer. I asked her if I should be expecting something else in the mail and she said no, so I wonder if they are saving all of the info in the packets for just the people who decide they are going to accept the admissions offer?

Any other SDNers hear back and plan to attend? Anyone who is currently in the program have any housing suggestions for a large dog owner? I will have a car so a bit of driving isn't an issue for me. When is a good time to start looking for housing?

Congrats on getting in! What state are you from?

The commutes here are rather vicious because of narrowings for tunnels & bridges, so make sure to drive morning/evening when you visit to see if you can stand it. If not, aim to be in Ghent.

You can find dog friendly properties in walking distance to school, if you're vigilant on craigslist. The daily listings with Lafayette Towers are pretty much the lowest common denominator - skip these, they're not in Ghent anyway - watch for the rare gems of Ghent/Colley/Freemason area duplexes with yards etc. Some of the properties managed by William E. Wood are dog friendly. School housing, Cavalier and the towers are not dog friendly.

As for timing, that depends on what you're looking for and what you're willing to contend with. I chose to get here mid-June to sign a year lease on my own place starting July 1. Others were willing to wait until the August to see who needs a roommate. If you want to live alone in a dog-friendly unit in walking distance to school, you'll want to budget $1000/mo, and hope to get lucky with something cheaper. If you want to share and you're willing to commute, you can probably get down to $300 in Suffolk or Portsmouth.

This town has tons of dog parks and you'll have plenty of company. I just finished fostering a golden, and it seems like half the school adopted a dog lately.

Best of luck to you.

Edit: I should mention that you need to pay attention to how close a place is to water, because there's frequent flooding during rainstorms. You have to be smart about where you park, and there are days when you can't drive in some neighborhoods. You can park at school when there's a storm coming in. Fun fact: Norfolk, Corpus Christi and New Orleans are the fastest sinking US cities.

I'm from Maryland, so not in state but within a reasonable driving distance. Thanks for the tips, I've been looking around some online but am planning to go down in May and see what I can find. I'm trying to avoid any tunnels because I've heard how bad the commute can be. I've become slightly accustomed to DC traffic working over the last year so as long as its not as bad as that, I think I can handle it.

I wouldn't mind a roommate as long as they don't mind a goofy yellow lab, but I probably will have to wait until closer to the start of the program to start looking for one. I'm sure I could get a bit more for my money if I were willing to share. This post has been kinda quiet for the lately so I'm assuming current Med Master's are busy with classes and many as still waiting to hear back but I'll keep checking in periodically.

My stats are:
cGPA: 3.21
sGPA: 3.15 (???)
Significant upward trend, dean's list last 3 semesters, including As in some upper level science courses.

MCAT - 30O (13V, 7PS, 10BS) PS was the death of me.

ECs:
About a semester worth of research but not much else.
Volunteer EMT - 12+ hrs a week for 3 years
physician shadowing
tutoring elem/middle school kids after school
worked as a student athletic trainer in college
Pretty unique hobby - showing dogs (ie like Westminster)

I've been working 30+ hrs a week since October as a PT tech.

Leah Solomon gave me a call the next day to make sure that it hadn't been delivered to my spam folder or something and make sure I knew that I had 10 days to accept the offer.

10 days! wow, is that contractual? what if you're waiting to be notified from other programs?

Just like med school admissions.

Option 1: Pay the deposit. Kiss it goodbye. Be grateful you have a spot. If you get other acceptances, and you want to give up your first acceptance, let the first school know right away so that somebody else can have your seat. No complaining about how it "cost you" $X to "give up" your seat.

Option 2: Decide you don't want the spot. Move on with your life.

May we all be so lucky to have such problems.

Here is my two cents, (from a guy who did not get in.)

First off, it is an awesome program. Splitting your first year into 2 years makes things much easier for you. If you have a GPA that needs improvement, this can be your saving grace. I work with a few people who did the SMP that scribe in the ED with me with their extra time off during M1, and they say they loved it. They said there experience was great, and most get in the following year.

However, as someone who applied last year with decent stats, I have a few words of advice. I applied with a 30 MCAT and >3.2 GPA right when the application opened up in October. (With less than stellar ECs)

  • If you are from this area, you will not be given preference. (Told directly from Dr. Meyer, "we do not want to become too inbred."
  • Do not send in your application until you are ready. I updated my application several times; two semesters worth of all As, multiple shadowing experiences over hundreds of hours, and over 1000 hours of scribe experience. I was assured that they had received all my updates, but when I asked why I did not get in a the end of the cycle. I was told "Your in the bottom one third because you do not have enough clinical experience." ARE YOU KIDDING!!!:meanie:

Long story short, I ended up getting into VCU/MCV without the SMP this October by boosting my uGPA up to ~3.4, and I did not waist the ~45,000 that the program would have cost. Would I have gotten into VCU if I had not done all the clinical work... prob not. So alls well the ends well. But I warn you. Do not apply to this program until you are ready with everything you want to put down on your application. THEY WILL NOT UPDATE YOUR RECORDS!!!

I'm sure people have different outcomes than me, but that is my story. And don't forget, I still think it is a great program. (By the way, I was waitlisted at the MD program at EVMS, top one third with the same stats as the bottom third for the SMP... if they had updated my app)

GOOD LUCK TO YOU ALL!!!!

Hi all. I'm working on my app right now and had a couple questions:

-If you have your letters on interfolio, do you put your own email in under recommender email?
-Hows the job market in the area seem? I ask for my wife.
