Evms

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I submitted my app a little over a week ago and realized that my MCAT scores are still outstanding. I went to the MCAT THx page but I didn't see an option to submit my scores to EVMS with the pre-selected program list. Does anyone remember how to get those in? I could print a score report and mail it in but that seems a little funky...

Generate a score report and send an electronic copy by email (I think you can save it as a PDF, or at least as HTML). The report has a verification number on it that EVMS can use to check.

I was wondering what are some of the typical schools that med masters students apply to during the masters year? (besides EVMS of course) Are there certain schools that students have traditionally had success in getting acceptances to? I'm guessing some of the other schools that have SMPs such as Drexel, Cincinnatti, and Gtown. What about VCU?

Tulane, GW, ECU, PSU are some other ones you may want to research more about. Also be prepared to apply to a couple of DO schools as well. It's better to have options at the end of it.

Just email Leah and she told me that I'm on the top 1/3 of the waitlist and she was asking whether I was still interested in going to EVMS.
Does anyone know whether top 1/3 usually get in ?

weird, I emailed her Sunday night and I didn't get a response. Is it the medmasters email?

I don't know if it's the same via e-mail, but in previous years, Leah would call people who were next up to be admitted and ask them if they were still interested in the med masters program. If you got that call and were still interested, your acceptance usually arrived a few days later. 👍

(disclaimer: like I said, this may not be the case for your e-mail)

Do you know how many people in your class applied to med school while being in the program and was accepted to med school ?

Everyone in the program has applied to med school, but we won't know the final tally until after our finals near the end of May (which is hopefully when EVMS will start admitting the Med Masters). Several people have already gotten in to other DO and MD schools, but we won't know the final number until EVMS's acceptances.

Do you know if there is any way to find out approximately how many people are on each tier of the waitlist and what percentage of those get off of it at least as it has been in past years trends??

I'm in the middle third as well. I completed my application like a week after yours or something which was pretty early I would think? Apparently finishing early didn't help us any in our position.

In the past, when they have asked you if you're still interested, that usually means that you'll be receiving an acceptance shortly I believe.

g0llbladder,

Did she specifically ask or did she have a line that said what I have written below??:

Please email me from time to time if you are still interested.

I had a line saying the above bolded in my email when I was told middle 1/3.

However being middle 1/3 is better then being rejected outright like I was at USF IMS this past week. USF IMS has about the same number of seats but nonrolling admissions and lower requirements MCAT wise but 3.0 for GPA wise.

I'm hoping they get through quite a bit of it though Gtown is still my number one choice so I'll be writing a LOI there to try my luck there as well.

Judging from past posts, if we, in the middle third do get accepted, it probably won't be anytime soon, maybe late june- july? and I don't think they outright reject anyone who apply to the program, they just put everyone on the list, at least from what I've read in the past have suggested that.

^ Yeah I can't be sure, but I think they waitlist pretty much everyone who meets the GPA and MCAT requirements, and given that there were over 500 applicants last year (and likely that many or more this year), the waitlist is probably pretty big.

That being said, I was told that I was in the middle 1/3 of the waitlist and I got in, albeit only a little less than a month before the program began.

gujuDoc,

she said "email me next week if you are still interested".

hmmm I'm really going to have a hard time waiting forever to move up this waitlist. I was told that I am in the middle third as well. I didn't finish my application until kind of recently so that probably confirms that people aren't waitlisted in order of when they apply. I just read in the EVMS medical masters 2009 thread that each third consists of 20 people (at least that was the case last year)...so that's encouraging?

Oh ok. I just realized I might have got your name wrong cuz I didn't look it up again. Sorry about that my bad.

That message makes sense since you are top 1/3. You going to email her?

Well EVMS is my top choice for SMP along with Cinncy so i emailed her yesterday saying i'm still interested.

EVMS 2009 thread? what thread is this? are you referring to earlier posts in this thread? if so, in which page. I heard that like 2 or 3 years ago, there were 200 people on the waitlist. 20 people per third is definitely alot more encouraging than 200 or 500 people.

nope, I'm not talking about posts from this thread. The thread is called "EVMS med masters 2009".

I just spoke to Leah Solomon (who, by the way, is EXTREMELY friendly and sweet) and found out that I'm on the lower third of the waitlist 🙁

She told me that each third consists of 20 people, which I was surprised to hear, as over 300 people have applied and not a single person on this forum has been flat out rejected.

But if indeed only 60 people are on the waitlist, this does make us more competitive than other applicants, which is good to know 🙂

Seems legitimate enough, I guess!

I looked up that person's posts, and it seems that even though he/she was in the lower third, he/she still got an acceptance which is good news. Hopefully this year, there will be just as much movement.

FYI Shawshank13 went to talk to Dr. Meyer directly in the summer and had an on-the-spot interview. Interest in the program definitely helps!

Cool. Since you say along with Cincy, which one did you like more??? I'm just curious. I applied to Cincy as well but was put on hold.

But I'm curious to hear your takeon which of these 2 places you would go to if accepted to both because I've heard a lot of people say they'd go to Cincy even over Gtown SMP in previous SMP threads from past years even though it's a newer program.

That is why I'm wondering what your take is?

Well I have not heard back from UC yet so I can't really decide right now but for me anyway cost is one of the biggest factor in attending a SMP. I think both program (Cincy & Gtown) is excellent but I am leaning towards EVMS and I'm probably going to drop Boston MAMS after securing a spot at either EVMS or Cinncy.

Both Boston and Gtown are expensive as hell and with 100++ students I think it will be hard for them to personalize their letter to a specific student. but on the other hand you are paying for their "prestigous" name to your application. I also heard that majority of the students going to BU and Gtown does not get into the med school classes instead just attending graduate classes.

In the end, weigh the factors that are important to you: acceptance to medical school, cost, location, place where you will do your best, etc. Just to let you know, in our class this year, at least 4 of us turned down the Georgetown SMP to go to EVMS.

Hello all,

So I finally got up the nerves to email Leah to see where I was on the waitlist. I was told I am in the top 1/3!!! so excited and relieved!!

Hopefully a few spots will open up and with some luck I'll be at EVMS in the fall '09!

Best of luck to everyone and cheers,

A.

I found this post from the first page:

"Yes, all smpers are automatically put on the waitlist. But, it is not the same as traditional applicants. All the smpers here are kind of in the dark in the process but we know that they rank us and start shuffling our acceptances in waves. I beleive there are 3 waves of acceptances for medical masters students. The first is in early June, late june, then mid july. So, it dosent matter where we are on the medical student waitlist, what matters is where you are ranked among your fellow smp students. No medical masters students are accepted outright after their interview."

So med masters students are competing against each other? Is this right?

for all you on the waitlist, I found this one the 2nd page:

"Hi all,
I talked to Tony Dorn today and she told me there are 35 students on the waitlist. She told me they take in students off the list on a rolling basis, so I'm assuming that if you're on the upper 1/3 then that's good news. Just a quick question, does that mean that you're application is pretty much "sealed"? Meaning there's no way to move up on the list?

Thanks and good luck on your applications "

This is from 2006 so things could have changed.

Seeing how we're going through the process now, I probably can't comment 100% accurately on this. Perhaps one of last year's med masters can chime in? Once everything settles out for us this year, I'm sure Daedalus or myself can let you guys know how everything went.

T - We interview for waitlist spots and nobody hears back immediately after the interview.
T - I believe the three waves of acceptances statement is correct from what I hear. The first batch will probably hear back a week or so after graduation (more likely post-May 15th when waitlist movement starts), and then 2 more batches afterward. Those who don't hear immediately usually set up a time to talk to the Dean of Admissions and convey their intent and reasons to be accepted to the MD class.

Does that mean we're competing with our classmates then? I don't think it's viewed in that light. Those who did well (H/HP) in all their classes and are great candidates will probably be offered first (Reasonable, right?). Then another set maybe with HP/P. Finally those who didn't do as hot will generate questions and additional evaluation time for the admissions committee to think about your application a little longer - does this individual really want to go to EVMS... really want to be in medical school and why doesn't their academic performance match that desire (hence the conversation with Dean). {This is just my speculation...}

I believe if everyone does awesome work, it's a moot point. But alas that is not always the case. How you do in this program and your acceptance into the EVMS med program are highly dependent on the actions you alone choose to take.

...

So med masters students are competing against each other? Is this right?

So I've got a few things to add to Immuno's post. First, I wouldn't take things from 2 years ago and apply them strictly today. While the general idea of the program (work hard and you'll get in) remains the same, the details of how they accept people changes quite a bit year to year.

We hear different things about if we're on a different waitlist from everyone else, but I can say unequivocally that the med masters do not compete against each other. There are a few reasons this is true. First, we are graded against the M1 class average, not a separate med master average or whatever. So if the entire med masters class is above 1.1 standard deviations above the M1 mean, the entire med masters class will get honors for that course. Like Immuno said, it really depends on how hard you're willing to work to get the grades. There's really no excuse not to get Honors or High Pass in at least a few of your classes, since we have a lighter workload than the M1s.

Second, and more importantly, there is no maximum number of med masters that they will accept into next years M1 class. The line is often said (by students and faculty alike), but it bears repeating - "a spot is waiting for your in next year's MD program, and it is only yours to lose". If the entire class does well enough, they will let everyone in.

As for the waitlist for next year's med masters, I still maintain that they likely waitlist everyone (we haven't had a single SDNer say they were rejected immediately), but who knows. Someone should ask Leah and see what she says.

But SDN also doesn't have all 500 applicants posting on here. From what I've seen there are a handful of students posting on here. So I wonder what this means. I'm going to email Leah and ask her more outright approximately how many are in each tier and how many people get waitlisted or if it is a position that is offered to everyone who is not outright accepted because I see mixed reviews on here.

haha very true - but there are quite a few who have applied over the past few years and posted on here, and we haven't heard of a single straight rejection. This is just my reasoning, and could be completely wrong, but I think its relatively close to the truth 🙂

This is oddly true. Even if people aren't jumping at the chance to announce their rejection, we should have heard of at least 1 rejection from the posts in the past couple years.

A little off-topic but, love your avatar, sunny in philly is just amazing. it's so disheartening that they didnt finish the season =(

HA! thanks for noticing. I didn't know that they didn't finish the season. Why didn't they? Either way, what a way to end the season. The final episode(musical) was freakin hilarious and moved the show towards legendary status. TROLL TOLL! lol

I got in off the top 1/3 of the waitlist about a month ago. Leah told me by phone that there is a lot of movement off the top third.

Congrats! And yeah, there should be a decent amount of movement come may 15th when people both with acceptances and still on the med masters waitlist get into med schools.

You knew you were in the top 1/3 a month ago? Didn't they just recently started giving positions out like a week ago? or am I mistaken?

Eilat sorry for the delayed response but here is the time frame of events in order to clarify. I received an email on 2/4 saying my application was complete. I then received an email one week later asking for a picture. I didn't initially respond to the picture request because I thought it was strange that a picture was required, but when I was asked for my picture again I sent my picture via JPEG format by email to Leah Solomon on 2/19. I received a phone call at work early in March from Leah Solomon saying I was waitlisted and I'd be receiving a hard-copy letter telling me the same thing. I have since thrown the hard-copy letter away because I was accepted so I cannot tell you the exact date I received the letter. During the phone conversation where I was told I was waitlisted, Leah told me I was on the top 1/3 of that waitlist and that they usually saw a lot of movement off that waitlist (she also told me to keep that to myself for a while b/c the waitlist was still being compiled). On March 18th I received a FedEx Overnight package with my acceptance and information that needed to be filled out and returned (along with a deposit) to hold my place. I think that an additional letter of recommendation (beyond the required ones that they had already received) arrived in the interim and perhaps was the small push needed to earn me an acceptance. I had more than three LORs sent as I've been out of undergrad for a bit and I wanted the PI of my lab to write me a letter as well. So, although my application was complete, had been reviewed, and I had been placed on the waitlist, something prompted them to remove me from the waitlist and accept me much more quickly than I was expecting. If you have more questions you can message me directly. Hope this helps.

How long did it take other folks to hear back after being notified that your application was complete?

I'm at 3 weeks now and am wondering if that's normal for a late submitter or if I should follow up with EVMS.

Thanks in advance.

Disregard the title, put weeks instead of days.

I got my "complete" notification a couple of days after I submit all the required documents. I don't know whether being a late applicant might hinder your notification or not.
I would contact them to make sure nothing is missing or lost in the mail; which has happened to me before.

I thought their deadline passed. When did you apply? I'd call Leah Solomon to ask for an update.

I submitted the day before the deadline but they didn't have one lagging transcript until a week later (~April 6). I'll give Leah a call and get the update.

Thanks!

Hi everyone,

I will be graduating in May and I will be selling my car. Please feel free to PM me if you're interested.

Best,
Pathd

Thanks for the tip about contacting Leah Solomon. She told me I'm on the bottom third of the waitlist which makes it seem like I'll probably not be moving to Norfolk this summer.

Good luck to all those still waiting to hear back!

This brings up something I was wondering about. How necessary is a car as a student at EVMS? I think I remember reading from olders posts that students park free at EVMS - is this still true? How's public transportation around the area? Is the nightlife around Norfolk packed into a small area where you can easily walk/take a cab everywhere, or do you need a car to get around? thanks

I second the question. Specifically, am I on crack if I want to live in one of the apartments up Colley, walk to school, leave my (small unfabulous) car parked on the street 95% of the time, use my bike for errands?

I think a car is necessary (because you really limit yourself to things immediately around campus, which isn't all that much), but you can certainly get by without it (and several students have). Yes, we get free parking on campus in the parking structure next to Lewis Hall (and the faculty lot after hours), but you can't just leave your car there for days on end, so its not a permanent parking solution. There is plenty of street parking though (depending on where you live).

And yeah, the nightlife is pretty centered - there are bars on Colley that are walking distance to school, and there are clubs and more bars downtown on Granby that are a short cab ride away.

Nope - thats what I do... minus the bike for errands lol.

+1 to what Daedalus said about a car being necessary...public transportation is horrible in the Tidewater area (though the light rail is "in progress"). That being said many things are accessible around the downtown Norfolk area but a lot of what is available to do outside of work/school is spread out around Norfolk and VA Beach that no one in their right mind would want to walk or bike to. And as for leaving your car around where you live it should be fine if you are living in the Ghent area.

What does the library thesis consist of? Is it basically a lit review of a topic of your choosing? Does this get published or presented? Do you necessarily have to do a library thesis, as opposed to an original research paper? I realize that student don't have time to do research during the masters year, but I've got an idea for conducting my own research on my own time(side project, wouldn't mind doing it just for fun) that could possibly lead to a paper or abstract. Anyone know if I could write this up instead of a library thesis?

Basically, at the beginning of the year, you will be given a list of professors and their respective topics of interest. The topics range in specificity from "Pick a type of cancer and write about the screening options and future of diagnosis" to topics on one specific factor of one particular pathway... 😀

Each person has to pick a topic (only one person per topic, so not everyone gets the topic they want), and then start to meet with that professor to see exactly how they want you to focus your paper, etc. They'll usually give you ideas of where to look for research in the area you're writing about - usually its their own area of expertise, so they've done research on it themselves.

Then you go collect sources from pubmed and write a minimum 30-page paper on your topic. There are regular deadlines for outlines and drafts, so it keeps you on schedule.

Our papers were just due on April 15th.

I don't think they would let you a paper on your own research project. The idea of the paper is to be a library research thesis, and believe me you'd be better off. You say you won't mind doing it in your off time now, but just wait til you're here - you won't want to use your free time to do research that you wouldn't have to do otherwise
