This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are you attending the program too? I am from Orange County (UCI)

I just graduated the program and will be entering as an MD student next fall - Immunorocks and I are both CA natives.

Great! Hopefully, Ill see you guys around. How do you like the program and do you have advices to give? I am a bit excited but nervous about it too. How are the courses taught, the grading, and the work load?

Thank you so much Guju! I will surely read their postings! I have a overall of 3.57 with a 29M(retaking it in July) and pretty decent EC (5 publications, 10+ abstracts, 10+ research conference presentations, LOR from UCIMS dean of Medicine, UCI MS dean of education, Steering committee for major medical mission fundraisers, put up health fairs for low income communities, ballroom dance, marathon runner, etc. However, I did turn in my primaries late last year and never turned in a secondary. I am not sure if this program will help me. A few people have told me that it will not benefit me as much and might hurt my chances. what do you guys think?

With a decent MCAT you shouldn't need an SMP. EVMS costs $46k - that's EXTREMELY expensive insurance coverage for your reasonable GPA. No SMP is going to fix your MCAT score.

But your schedule is all catterwompus, because you're already late for a fall '10 MD app (apps opened last week; your score won't be available until late August). If you're very confident that your MCAT will be, say, 32+, then I'd go ahead and apply MD right away, and follow through rigorously. If you're not confident that you can do really well on the MCAT, then slow it down. Way down. Applying late (or half-assed) is typically worse than not applying at all.

You'll want to be ready to explain why you didn't complete the app process last year - that looks like quitting.

Best of luck to you.

I am about 50 percent done with my AMCAS app. I am rewriting my personal statement and then add more things to my extracurricular. Hopefully, I can study my eyes out on for the MCATs get around that score and be set! I am still debating about the EVMS program. It might be a very exciting experience and I am not sure if I will be able to get into medical school still with my borderline scores. Maybe I should take the program...

I will PM all of them tonight when I get home. I am from California and hopefully I will be applying to about 30+ schools. 🙂

I have talked to my research PI, hes on the admissions board for UCIMS and he said that I should have a chance to get into somewhere. As for why I never turned in any secondaries. I applied super late last year Sep/Dec...so I learned my lesson about super late applications. Then as I recieved my secondaries my mother became ill again and underwent surgery. My family hit extreme financial difficulties and money was scarce in my household. I could not afford to pay for another 4k of applications knowing that I was already late. I hope this is a good reason. Otherwise Im hopeless

How are the Hague Club apartments, in terms of facilities, maintenance, unit size, etc. compared to Hague Tower and Pembroke Tower? I just got an email saying they have some availabilities for this summer for people already on the waitlist but I'm close to signing a lease at Hague Tower.

In the financial aid package for last year, how much did EVMS budget for living expenses?

Anyone know when orientation is the med masters program? When do classes start?

Any updates on how many med masters students have been accepted to EVMS med school?

thanks,
Nightman

Med masters who lived in Hague Towers and Pembroke Towers this year really liked where they live and are returning to the same place next year, and at least one other is moving into Hague Towers. People seem to like Hague Club as well, so I guess I'm not too much help on that question - sorry

Orientation starts August 17th, classes start on the 19th

Can't give you exact numbers of med masters acceptances, but the majority have already heard. Those that haven't should know by the end of June, I would imagine.

Just to clarify, it's a majority that have already heard positively! 😀

And about Hague Club, I'll try to give a quick summary here from the info I got. For the 2009-2010 year:

1 bdrm - ~608 SF; 2 bdrm - ~800 SF; 1 bdrm with Loft - ~728 SF
Buildings are 3 stories high, no elevator
Rent - $696/mo (1bdrm), $933/mo (2bdrm), $780/mo (loft)
Utilities - water, sanitation included; pay electricity yourself
Features - central heat & A/C, 24-hr onsite laundry facility, refrigerator & dishwater in every unit, private entrances, wall-to-wall carpet, eat-in kitchen, EVMS security available 24/7, parking lot available and street parking too, mini-blinds, no pets, 24h "emergency" maintenance

I have floor plans too, but that might be a bit too much for this post. 😛 Let me know if you want more info!

Sorry, just to clarify....is this for the med masters program or those graduating from the med masters program and heading into MD?

Damn....so if the majority of those applying to the SMP have already heard, it's not looking to bright for me 😕. Top third waiting list....still waiting....

EDIT: opps, I just read a few posts up and it seems you were answer nightmans question about med masters heading to EVMS for the MD....a little relieved...

So if you didn't get the email about this I'm guessing they haven't reached your "spot"? I REALLY want to live in the Hague. I guess I'll just call and ask tomorrow

The email was to notify people of availability of furnished rooms. They sent out an email to all those who stated they were interested in furnished rooms on the application.

Hi,
I am currently trying to sell my condo in the West Ghent area of Norfolk. I know this site is not typically used for advertising but wanted to put the info out there in case someone is looking to buy a condo for use while they are in school at EVMS.

I am located on Brandon Ave in West Ghent. 2 BR/1 BA, about 1500 sq ft. Central A/C, washer and dryer in unit. If you are interested, please see additional info (with pics) at the following address:

Thanks, I called and spoke to the lady today- she was super nice!

congrats, when did you apply? were you on the wait list, and if so how long were you on the waitlist?
Hey I applied on may 15th of this year. I was on the waitlist for about 2 weeks 🙂 Thank You! will you be going to EVMS SMP also?

Hey, guys, I'm one of the med master this year or shall I say last year... just letting you guys who are getting into this coming year know, you guys came to the right program, I think it has one of the best linkage rate out of all the SMP programs. As of now, 20/23 of us have gotten into med school, either here or somewhere else, and it's only mid June. I really hope all of us gets in. Come on Dr. Solhaug!

Hello Chronic Rain!
The numbers are amazing! Did all of the students make it into an MD school? Do you know the different schools that they got in? Also, how tough was the program? Since 20/23 have gotten into medical school did everyone do well? Sorry, I have tons of questions. I am going to EVMS SMP for sure. Also, do you have any other tips/advices that you would like to share? Please Please let me know.

Thank You

Thanks! This is very uplifting information especially since med school waitlists aren't showing much movement... It makes me excited for EVMS!

I do not know if i'll be going, i've been on the waitlist (top 1/3) for more than a month now, starting to lose hope!

Well, in order for this WL to start moving, someone currently in the SMP program has gotta get off a waitlist at an MD school or somewhere else, meaning someone at that school has to get off a waitlist, which means someone at top tier or cheap state school needs to decide to switch career paths or defer for a year or something. So maybe we should find a way to target these upstream effectors...

Edit: I need a more challenging day job

greetings everyone! hope your summers are treating you well. i wanted to see if any of you (male or female) still need a place to live. A fellow M2 (female) and I (male) are looking for a 3rd roommate to live in a bomb townhouse (only 5 years old!) in the west ghent area. You will have your own bathroom, a parking spot (possibly in our garage), and of course share all the amenities with us (washer/dryer, decked out kitchen with stainless steel appliances, balcony off the kitchen). It is located at Redgate and Orapax, and the neighborhood is very quiet and nice.

Rent: $680-700/month (electric, cable, and gas not included)
Start Date: The lease starts July 15, but we can work with someone looking to start August 1.

We are looking for a roommate who is clean, considerate, relatively quiet, but can still chill and hang out for a couple drinks/dinner every now and then.

Please send me a private message if you're interested!

I've been offered a fully furnished 2 bedroom unit in Hague Club(just missed out on the furnished 1 bedroom) for next year. The lease will start beginning of August and the rent is $1033/month(~$516 each person). I was set on living by myself and am close to signing the lease for a studio at Hague Towers, but the cheap monthly rent at Hague Club is extremely enticing. Still, I think I may fork over the extra dough and get the studio. But before I make any decisions, I just wanna see what my options are. Anyone interested in one of the rooms in the 2 bedroom at Hague Club? If so, PM so we can exchange info.

target the upstream effectors? i'm open to ideas. haha

no way, attrite is a VERB? I had no idea.

Meanwhile I'm sitting in the Norfolk airport, on my way home after a 2 day visit. Very comfortable w/the decision to do EVMS. And I scored a way cool apartment.

Plus I met Daedalus, which was great AND by far the most Matrix-like experience I've had. Wait, SDN isn't reality?!?

Dr. Midlife, care to share some things you found out about EVMS during your trip? Whether it be about the school, students, area, etc. By the way, where are you going to be living in the fall?

Soooooooo freaking true!!!! This year the waitlists at medical school are moving sooooooooooooo slowly. and its not necessarily cuz of people who had multiple acceptances but because a lot of schools over accepted by larger numbers so they need to attrite people off the overaccepted list first at many places. I know of at least one school that over accepted by a much larger number.

I don't even know how to take this news about waitlists since I am 4 SMP waitlists right now and it is killing me! But they do say that good things come to those who wait..

haha so true. that's why I'm against those who just jump on the DO or island school bandwagon to rush it up.

Where else are you waitlisted outside of EVMS?

Other than EVMS I;m still waiting on Georgetown, UC, and Tufts. I actually applied to some carib schools and got in, but i REALLY hope this SMP thing comes through for me.

hahaha that's so funny cuz those are all the schools that waitlisted me except UC put me a step below waitlist on hold if by UC you mean UCincy.

Did you apply to BU MAMS???? That's the one I got into and actually the second most well known. its only drawback is that its ultra expensive and they want you to apply after doing the year of classes.

I do mean UCincy. It's crazy, I'm guessing waitlistees are in a huge majority everywhere this year. I didn't apply to BU MAMS but I feel like if I end up getting in somewhere I'll still have to wait a year to apply because my AMCAS will be so late. I hope I get in somewhere soon, but until then :xf::xf::luck::luck: etc. etc..

Would you consider applying to their SMP??? I would and did because of being in the same situation as you with 4 SMP waitlists.
so you applied late, like recently and got in? I would definitely consider it, if they're still taking applications.

Dr. Midlife, care to share some things you found out about EVMS during your trip? Whether it be about the school, students, area, etc. By the way, where are you going to be living in the fall?

Sure. This is going to be long, sorry to those of you who are not wanting this info (or not wanting it yet).

Never having been to Norfolk was too weird, since I'm soon to live there, and I wanted to see the school and hopefully meet some of the people running the med masters. For me it was super important to go there vs. arrange housing over the phone or whatnot.

First about EVMS:

I emailed Leah Solomon in May to let her know I was coming to town, and I asked if it would be appropriate for me to meet Dr. Meyer, the program director. She set up an appointment for me to meet with him. I also PMed Daedalus and Immunorocks to see if they'd be in town (and took the red pill). I got hotel recommendations from Leah, and picked Page House Inn even though it's spendy ($150/night), because I was traveling alone. (I would normally Motel 6 it or couch surf.) I rented a car but planned on mostly walking around.

I've been obsessing for more than a year over how the EVMS med masters works and what its graduates have to say about every last detail. I've read the EVMS med student threads over in allo. I've read everything I can on evms.edu about curriculum and the academic calendar and financial aid. I'd also been accepted at Tufts and Tulane ACP, and waitlisted at Gtown and Cincinnati, so I'd done similar obsessing about location and program and had that data with which to compare EVMS.

When I got to the school on June 18, I met first with Leah and we chatted about various things, health insurance and tuition etc. and whether or not I was the oldest person who ever did the program (I'm 43, no I'm not the oldest ever). There are "always" med masters students who are older, have families, etc. The Aetna student health insurance policy is more expensive than some private policies. Tuition for OOS students just went up about $1000 so it's now 29,298.

Then Dr. Meyer came down and talked with me for better than an hour while we did a walking tour of Lewis Hall and the medical campus. The quality of the building is modest, clean and functional, not fancy or grungy. Lots of painting and upgrading is going on. There's a lounge with vending machines and bulletin boards and about a dozen tables. There are multiple libraries, a bookstore with school supplies and souvenirs, and computer labs. Security makes you sign in if you don't have a badge. We couldn't get into the labs, but histology will still use microscopes (some med schools are all digital now) and the med masters students do this lab at a different time from the med students. There are two big lecture halls in Lewis hall, 200+ seat auditoriums. There's a children's hospital in a huge, expanding building that's separate from the regular hospital that's huge and expanding. There are other clinics and offices in other big buildings, and 2-3 parking garages. But it seemed psychologically manageable: big enough, sure, but not a vast conglomerated universe. (I'd visited Washington U in St. Louis the day before, on the way to Norfolk: now that's a vast conglomerated universe, and completely intimidating, and it looks like lots and lots of money. I also know, too well, the U of Washington health sciences campus, which looks and feels like a penitentiary crossed with a rabbit warren, goes on for miles, is run down where it isn't under construction, and where you can walk around all day without anybody looking at you. And I know that Dartmouth has no children's hospital, and that for somebody who wants to do a peds specialty this is a detriment in terms of how many cases are seen and how much autonomy the peds specialists have.)

Dr. Meyer was extremely patient and friendly and encouraging. He meets with med masters a couple times during the year to give feedback and groom for EVMS interviews (in May? spring, anyway). The fall coursework instructors get to know the med masters students very well, and feed this info to Dr. Meyer, who considers performance feedback and general med school app credentials and pushes students to fill in gaps. He does mock interviews and takes it very personally whether the med masters students are succeeding or not. So he was VERY aware that 20 of 23 '09 med masters students are currently in at EVMS or another school for this coming fall. He walked me through the "yearbook" of current med students and pointed out which ones were med masters grads. He strongly roots for students to stay at EVMS, but insisted that he's very supportive of same-year apps to other schools and that he fully understands the instate tuition pull for folks to go "home" for med school. He emphasized that there's never a guarantee that a med masters grad is going to get into EVMS med school, but holy cow does this guy work hard to make it happen for students that pony up the effort. He mentioned that there are three people at Gtown who do his job, and he mentioned Dr. Mulroney there as a familiar colleague. (He was surprised to hear that there are now 180+ students at Gtown.) He's been physiology faculty at EVMS for some 25 years, and running the med masters since 1999, he's an adcom, and he doesn't seem the slightest bit burned out.

I also went by the financial aid office to see if my paperwork was in order (which it is thank goodness). Darmailya talked to me for a good 20 minutes, mostly just chatting, and was very clear and encouraging about the aid process. My strategy with financial aid offices is paranoia and politeness, but this office looks much better organized and efficient than some I've seen, and I'm not worried. Award letters are expected about a month before school starts, and after awards are accepted (after we sign and return), it's another week or so for approvals and accounting. Students can do everything we need to via email. If we're on top of our responsibilities, there's no reason we won't get our living money when school starts, and we can "ignore" the scary tuition bill. We'll get emailed as various steps of the process occur.

About housing:

Since January, I've been obsessively looking at housing ads on Craigslist and Sinapse, and walking the neighborhoods on Google Maps street view, so I'd done my homework. I've owned property and been a landlord, so I know what I like, and don't like, and how to spot trouble. I've also been reading the local paper for a while. I had a sense that the Ghent neighborhood was walkable to school, and that I should be able to find an EVMS student to live with for maybe $500-$700/month, or that I'd be able to find a studio or 1br apartment for maybe $600-$800/month. Living in a tower or complex would be depressing; living on the top floor of a 2-3 story 100 year old building with charm and central air and wood floors would be sweet.

What I thought would happen: I figured I'd meet a couple people who were looking for roommates and maybe find a liveable situation. I figured I'd also check out a couple studios and/or 1 bedroom apartments in the buildings owned by Cavalier or one of the other property management companies that are on Craigslist all the time. What I was afraid of was that any shared living situations would all be with psycho cat-owning smokers, and that any apartments I liked would take longer than 4 days to background check me, and that I'd go home with nothing.

What did happen: About an hour after I got off the plane, I checked Craigslist, and there was a new apartment listing for a 1 bedroom just under $700, in walking distance to school, in an old charming building. I called immediately and went right over. I knew I was in trouble when I saw the cobblestone street. Another party showed up to look at it as well. The tension mounts. The landlord/owner shows up and is non-creepy. The apartment oozes charm and is non-crappy. My checkbook starts to vibrate in my backpack. Top floor of a 100 year old 3 story walkup. Wood floors. Central air. Clawfoot tub. Put a fork in me, I'm done. 3 hours after arriving in a town to which I've never been before, I signed a lease. Quite possibly the biggest score of my life.

About Ghent et al:

I'd be unable to succeed in school if I were in Manhattan, because there's too much fun stuff going all all the live long day, and really I shouldn't have even applied to Gtown (every 30 seconds: "is that Obama? is that Orzsag? omg is that Justice Ginsberg?!?!?!"). But being in suburbia would put me in the psych ward. I need minimum daily distraction, and maximum pretty things to look at while walking around. Ghent is perfect. Good enough coffee shops and delis and movie theatres and museums etc. but not so great that I'll want to be out and about all the time. I saw a reasonable number of choices for groceries and laundromats and drugstores. I found good produce and good fish. I'll be pretty comfortable walking alone at night along Colley, and certainly during daylight around school. Lots and lots of people are out walking dogs at all hours. There's tons of construction going on, on the major streets, and on the EVMS campus. I didn't have trouble finding parking on the street. Everything around Norfolk is military friendly and there were a fair number of people in fatigues, but around Ghent they seemed outnumbered by regular folk and people in scrubs.

South of Ghent, in the downtown/Freemason area, there's upscale shopping and event centers and art galleries and high end housing, interspersed with some urban decay. The waterfront areas are decidedly lowbrow, developed and fairly clean but not touristed/resorted to death. The water doesn't smell all that nice, but it's not gross.

I've been advised to plan on street flooding, and I won't try to store anything in a basement - this is a town built on a swamp, absolutely, just like NOLA. I'm hoping I can park in an EVMS garage during a torrent. But there was a pretty impressive overnight thunderstorm with a big hard rain while I was there, and that wasn't enough to put any water on the road.

In summary, I'm cautiously excited about EVMS and Ghent and Norfolk and my sweet-ass apartment, and I'm feeling quite confident that I'm one seriously lucky old fart to have gotten into the program.

Obviously I have too much to say here, and I'm sure this is the longest and most tedious post ever made on SDN, but a year ago I would have nearly memorized this kind of a post, and I'm hoping other/future SMPers find it useful.

Said it before, and I'll say it again. You are amazing Dr. MidLife, thanks for your time. As a person who has never been to Virginia, at least now I know what to expect  I'm sure some frantic SDNer is going to love your post next year, I know I would have.

I'd also been accepted at Tufts and Tulane ACP, and waitlisted at Gtown and Cincinnati, so I'd done similar obsessing about location and program and had that data with which to compare EVMS.
I had a tough time deciding between UCinci and EVMS because they are very similar programs, but it really came down to the cost of living being cheaper in Norfolk and generally being a more pleasant climate and atmosphere.

Sorry I haven't been so active here, been enjoying the last summer before med school starts. 🙂 Just to give a bit more info about this program, the final decision still depends on your whole package, ie, your undergrad gpa, mcat, grades from the med master program, the interview, etc. From my own experience, grades from the med master program AND the interview plays a very big part in the final decision, if you can get A's in every one of the classes and do a decent job during interview, you are pretty much in. BUT, you will hear this over and over again: there is NO garantees! because again, it depends on your whole package, but i would be surprised if you didn't get in.
Not every1 can get A's in every class, I didn't, but one piece of advice: no matter what you do, DO NOT get a C! Especially in the classes that you take with the med students, such as biochem, physiology, histo... Biochem and physio are two very material intense courses, so be mentally prepared and try not to overwhelm yourselves. Getting a C in one of these classes can really hurt your chance of getting in.
Also, like I mentioned before, the interview is very important here, because this is such a small school, the interviewers have a lot of say, so try not to piss them off in any way. lol
ok, i think this is plenty to read for now, if I think of something, I'll be sure to post them later. Best of luck to the ones still waitlisted, and congrats to the ones accepted 🙂 Look forward in seeing you guys next year (in 2 months) lol

Quick question: any considerable advantages or disadvantages to living at Hague Tower vs Pembroke Tower?

I realize that Pembroke is closer to campus, although not by much. Is one "nicer" than the other? thanks

I think Hague Tower would probably get the nod as being a little "nicer" than Pembroke, but there's not a huge difference.

Hi EVMS acceptees!

Can anyone who has received FAFSA aid for their acceptance, please answer this concerning question?

Does the subsidized loan include housing money and food? Or do they only give you enough Stafford loans to cover the ~30k loans for tuition?

Thank you!!!

Cost of attendance includes tuition/books/rent/food/transportation/miscellaneous. Federal loans cover cost of attendance. Subsidized Stafford maxes out at $8500, then unsubsidized Stafford covers another $12k, and the rest is GradPlus.

Last year's COA is here: http://www.evms.edu/students/fin-aid/budgets/biomed.html. Tuition went up a couple thousand for OOS, less for instate. Award letters won't go out until the end of July or so.

Thanks! Just to clarify,

can one take GradPlus (if they pay the interest while in school) over unsubsidized, or do you have to use up unsubsidized funds first before exhausting GradPlus?

GradPlus isn't a better deal than Stafford unsub. Interest accrues on both during school.

You can reject any part of an award, piece by piece.
