anyone call about the waitlist yet or everyone waiting for may 1?

Hey everybody

So I've pretty much made my final decision to attend EVMS Medical Master's this coming fall. I am really excited and can't wait to get there. I have a few questions for people who are in the program, have completed the program, or will be in the program. Where should I look for housing? I saw that DrMidLife found a place on craigslist, but are there any other places? I need to find a place with a lease starting August 1st, but most of the places start before that. Do most places for August leases get posted in May? I plan on coming down for a weekend near the end of May to hopefully sign a lease. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Also, I was wondering if the Medical Master's students can participate in any of the medical student groups? I have seen that there are a few free medical clinics that medical students participate in and I would like to also if possible. I was also wondering if there are shadowing opportunities available?

Thanks

HWhere should I look for housing?
Email Leah for the student housing official flyer. There is some student housing across the street from school, but med masters don't get first dibs.

Watch for housing listings posted on myevms.evms.edu or http://student2.evms.edu/virtual_market/. No login required to get to housing listings.

Looks at Hague Towers & the Pembroke, http://haguetowers.com/. This is where a lot of students live. If you're going to want to party, don't live there, they'll kick you out for being noisy.

Look back through this thread and the EVMS class of ____ threads in allo.

May is way too early to sign an August lease.

Also, keep in mind that if you sign a 12 month lease, you pay 12 months of rent. School's out from May 20ish to August 15ish.

It's worth it to take a trip to look at what's available. In a lot of cases, if you're dealing with a property management company, you can look at openings in May, and fill out an app in May, and when the August openings come up you're in position to make a good choice. With private parties, you can't do this, but when you visit you can look at current craigslist openings to get a feel for the neighborhood and potentially sign from a distance.

Seems like a lot of folks found their roommates on facebook last year. Somebody will start the med school class group before long.

Generally the med masters get to do any activities the M1's can do. Shadowing is super easy - just go up and ask whenever an MD does a lecture, usually a couple times a week. If you pursue it, you'll find it.

Thanks for the quick response!

I guess I just need to take a deep breath and relax. I have been feeling like I am behind when it come to looking for a place. At my current school, people start signing leases for the next school year starting in January. May is considered late if you want a place within 5 miles of campus. When would be a good time to start looking for August leases?

It really depends on what you're looking for. If you're very specific about details, you'll have to work your butt off and watch listings like a hawk. If you're flexible, you can wait until the last minute.

I'm from the west coast, and I went out in late June. I had a bunch of appointments set up to meet with people looking for school year roommates. But an hour after I got off the plane, a perfect old charming place showed up on Craigslist, and I signed a lease 2 hours later. If this hadn't worked out, I had 2 more days to keep looking. I'm completely solid on what my requirements are, so I can move really fast. If you need some time to hem & haw, then just give yourself that time so you don't get stressed out - maybe plan a May visit to look around, and a late June to mid July visit to close a deal.

I'm a former Med Master and about to graduate from EVMS this May. If anyone has any specific questions I would be happy to help. Historically, this program has a very high matriculation rate, about 75%, it's a great program but you must work your bumb off. You must do better than the average medical student. If you do, you will be rewarded.

You can were whatever you like within reason. Probably the same as what you wore to class in undergrad. When you get into medical school and start seeing patients is when you are expected to dress professionally.

anyone hear back from fin aid yet or know how good their aid packages tend to be?

Don't expect any grants if that's what you're hoping for. financial aid packages are pretty standard. You are eligible for the maximum goverment aid both subsidized and unsubsidized. Anything after that you make up with graduate plus loans. Every year is a little different but you are left with something like $15,000 to live on.

I'm going to call this afternoon. We should call Leah Solomon, correct?

I just tried calling now and found out that Leah is out of the office for awhile. Then, I called Rose, but I never seem to catch her at the right time. I've only had luck once when I called her early in the morning (PST), which would be before noon EST.

Both Rose and Leah are out of the office today. This is kind of frustrating, haha.

Yeah, I didn't have any luck with Rose either. At least you guys know you're on the waitlist, I'm still waiting for my decision! I applied really late and was complete in early April.

This directed to present students who did not use the EVMS provided health insurance, I am looking to obtain insurance from an outside(non evms) VA based insurance provider (blue cross etc) and looking at quotes some are around $1700/yr with deductable vs the ~$2400/yr through EVMS, but being a non-VA resident with intention of moving in during the beginning of August (~1 week or so before orientation, but would know my address by aug 1st) would I then apply for insurance with my VA address to then get approved and have my card mailed to my residence to have copied and bring to orientation as my proof of having insurance? Basically I am just wondering the timeline and process for making this happen as I would love to save a couple hundred on insurance if possible, gracias in advance.

I have a question about credit received during Medical Masters. My understanding is that you get Honors (A) or High Pass (A-/B+) you will not have to retake those classes as a M1 student at EVMS.

Are those credits transferable to other schools?

Is it possible to earn enough credits to save a semester of tuition?

Thanks!

Generally no, you'd have to petition the other school to be let out of a curriculum requirement. The way M1 classes are organized varies greatly from school to school.

Is it possible to earn enough credits to save a semester of tuition?
No, that's not the deal. An SMP is med school on the five year plan.

If you honor every med masters class, you spend your M1 in anatomy, human dev't and clinical intro classes. You can also TA histology and possibly other classes.

Any class you high pass or honor you will not have to retake. As far as transferring credits to other schools it does happen, and it is school dependant, but most students who finish the SMP program at EVMS stay at EVMS anyway. You will pay the full tuition regardless of how may classes you won't have to repeat.

Thanks guys for the quick response!

A few more quick questions. How do other schools view the EVMS medical masters program? Is it better or worse than any other postbacc program in the eyes of other med schools? Why do most people stay at EVMS? Can you give some examples of other med schools that EVMS masters student have gotten into?

Anyone have any luck reaching someone about their waitlist position? I've left messages on Rose's voicemail, emailed Dr. Meyers, left a message with his assistant, and emailed Leah, all to no avail. Any ideas? I really want to gain admission to this program!

Hi guys,

I was just wondering: How does EVMS help/advise students who concurrently apply to medical schools while in the Medical Masters program? What kind of support is there and what is the experience like? Especially since you may miss classes due to interviews and what not?

Any info is much appreciated.

Thanks!

Dr. Meyer is fairly aggressive in making sure med masters students have concurrent apps going, for MD and DO.

He writes an introduction letter for each student that can be included with LORs, so that other med schools know what to expect from EVMS med masters students.

When fall grades are available, Dr. Meyer does a 2nd letter that can be sent to other med schools along with transcripts.

With all SMPs, a same-year-as-SMP app to other med schools is a late app. The benefit you'll get from an SMP isn't verifiable by other med schools until after fall semester. Plan accordingly.

As for conflicts with interview schedules, med masters students have a number of options. Even if you have an exam conflict, it can be worked out. You'll get a full med masters schedule for the semester on the first day of class. If you act responsibly, you'll be supported.

Lastly, with EVMS (as with Tulane ACP & Cincinnati), the odds are extremely good that you'll get accepted in the host med school, right away, if you perform well in the SMP. General "what are my chances" discussions don't really apply here.

Best of luck to you.

Dr. Midlife, have any of the current Med Master's students found out yet about EVMS acceptance for next year? I'm interested seeing what percentage of you get accepted and based on what I've read about past years, it's getting to be about the time when you all hear. If you haven't heard back yet, GOOD LUCK 🙂
Also, do you know of any of your classmates who have acceptances already at other schools? If so, which ones?

FYI I'm not talking about being accepted into another SMP, I'm talking about getting accepted to medical school at the end of the SMP year. I was curious if the current med Masters have heard back from EVMS about their medical school acceptance, considering the SMP year is now over. I'm sure a ton of people are still waitlisted at EVMS's Med Masters program because hundreds applied for only 20 spots or so.

Dr. Midlife, thanks for the info. It was super helpful. Another quick question...When exactly does the letter from Dr. Meyer go out? Should I add it to my AMCAS application or is it sent out after I have already submitted my primary?

I'm curious to also know where previous med masters have gotten in to medical school besides EVMS if you have those stats.

Thanks again for all the great info.

Last year's class of 23 had 20 students start immediately at EVMS or at another med school. These are the stats that made me choose EVMS, and these are the stats that you're going to keep seeing from EVMS. EVMS doesn't let you into the med masters without wanting you to get into EVMS med school. It's your seat to lose.

There are a couple I know of that got into EVMS, and a couple that got accepted elsewhere. I haven't heard any news in a while because everybody's studying for finals.

Yeah that is what I was talking about as well. The person who PMed me was worried about attending EVMS on the basis they heard a lot of people were waitlisted for med school who were currently in the EVMS MBS program. And that not as many have gotten in yet as have in past years. So that is why I was curious to the answers to your question. That is what made them wonder if it was as great as some of the other SMPs they were applying to.
EVMS med masters students interview for the waitlist. So it's completely expected that most med masters are still on the waitlist. Waitlists don't start to move until after May 15. What's happening this year is absolutely the same as what happened last year and the year before: May 15 comes, everybody freaks out, and then acceptances start to roll in.

I should disclose that I'm on a leave of absence from the EVMS med masters program since December. I'll be returning in August. I'm on facebook with most of my classmates and I mostly get news that way.

Definitely don't hold your primary app for the first letter.

Ideally you'd be done with your secondaries before you start the med masters. I'd say half the class was done and was going to interviews before the program started last August, and half the class wasn't done with secondaries yet or was still picking schools.

Dr. Meyer's first letter goes out in early September. You email him all the info about your letter service (AMCAS, interfolio, etc.) and he takes it from there.

In your primary and in your secondaries, you can mention that you're doing the program, and then Dr. Meyer's letter comes along and legitimizes your claims. What you want is for some schools to put you on hold until your fall grades are available - that's how you get the SMP benefit for a same year app.

I don't have a lot of info about other schools. VCU is pretty common. Stony Brook. OHSU. USUHS. About half the med masters class is from out of state, and there's always a bunch that get into their state schools.

Best of luck to you.

Is there anywhere (I know Gtown smp has a specific page with this info on their site) where we can find how to appropriately fill out our primary applications as far as class listings and how they are to be entered in that sections of AMCAS, obviously we wont have transcrips for these classes as we have not taken them, but we are still to list them correct?

Here you go: http://www.evms.edu/evms-school-of-health-professions/medical-masters-ms.html.

Make sure to mark these classes as yet-to-be-taken so that AMCAS doesn't expect you to submit a transcript.

thanks drmidlife, for quick confirmation on amcas, do we select we are attending EVMS-graduate studies vs. just EVMS, and then Masters of Science degree, and is program type graduate or postbacc undergrad, i was thinking the former?

Hmm, they didn't differentiate last year, but I see now they do on 2011 AMCAS.

I'd go with EVMS grad studies, program type graduate. Degree name is Master of Science. Major name is Biomedical Science. No transcript required because you're currently enrolled and have no prior coursework @ EVMS.

Was anyone able to reach someone at EVMS about their waitlist position. The voicemail's of Leah and Rose both say they are out of the office? I sent an email to medmasters as well and it wouldn't send.

ditto... trying to reach Leah is virtually impossible. I've been trying on and off for about a month now it hasn't happened. I did speak with Dr. Meyer a few weeks ago and while he was very nice and willing to talk, he wouldn't really give me anything concrete about my position on the wait-list, only that I am "very competitive."

I am currently also on the wait-list for the MD program, could that have something to do with a lack of action from the Med-Masters?

May 15 is the deadline for holders of multiple MD acceptances to pick one school. So after May 15, lots of med schools including EVMS are receiving notification of folks giving up their MD seat. Takes days & days to deal with at each school. Then days and days to deal with at the other affected school. Then after an MD seat (such as at EVMS) is opened, somebody is picked off the MD waitlist to fill it. This is usually done once or twice a week by a committee that meets at a regular time. After the regular meeting, then it takes days and days to offer acceptance to whomever came off the waitlist.

Then you repeat for somebody coming off an MD waitlist who will release their SMP seat.

If you look up "simulated annealing" in wikipedia, it may give you a sense of what happens between May 15 and August 15 in a typical admissions year.

EVMS is a lower tier MD school, so it's way down the chain of events.

Look, you can do whatever you want. But calling Leah, calling Rose, calling Dr. Meyer, etc. doesn't really change your chances, doesn't really give you more info, and if you're not REALLY careful, it can backfire and you'll make a bad impression that's fresh in Dr. Meyer's mind when he's looking at the waitlist.

EVMS is old school. Practice your cursive. Take some pictures of yourself with your boyfriend/girlfriend/dog/motorcycle/garden. Write a card, enclose a picture. Send one to Dr. Meyer as often as you like, be incredibly polite, emphasize that you're hoping to be accepted to the med masters program. Send one to Leah as often as you like. Personally I'd send out cards once a week, and call once a month.

I am currently also on the wait-list for the MD program, could that have something to do with a lack of action from the Med-Masters?
The MD admissions committee that processes the MD waitlist has no overlap with the med masters admissions committee that processes the med masters waitlist. It's possible, but unlikely, that the med masters committee knows you're on the MD waitlist, but it would only be relevant to you if you're about to be offered a med masters seat. In that case, Dr. Meyer would probably check with MD admissions on your status before offering you a seat, in case you're on the top of that waitlist too.

"lack of action" sounds disrespectful and immature to me, fwiw. There are woefully underpaid, extremely dedicated and hard-working people between you and a med masters acceptance. And the same people will be between you and good grades if you get in.

Best of luck to you.

Edit: I should mention that Dr. Meyer knows about SDN.

I meant no disrespect in any way-shape-or form by this. Of all the people I've talked to during this application process, Dr. Meyer is the ONLY person that gave me the feeling that he actually wanted to be talking to me. Every other person gave me that back-handed feeling that I was waisting their time.

Once again, sorry if I came off as disrespectful. This process is incredibly mentally exhausting. Its EXHAUSTING to feel your stomach drop every time the mail man drives by, just to be disappointed over and over again. I'm doing my best to be patient and hang in there...

Hey Leo, sorry you haven't had a reply to this yet - like you said, I would wait until you have your VA address and use that for your insurance application. You don't actually need your proof of insurance at orientation, so don't worry if it hasn't arrived yet. In fact, they give you about a month (or more, I can't really remember) after school starts to opt out of the EVMS insurance. But obviously the earlier you opt out, the sooner you get that extra money back in your refund. (and you need your proof of insurance to complete the opt out procedure)

If you guys have any other questions please ask, and good luck to those of you still on the waitlist.

I have another question: what's involved in the library research thesis requirement? What are the topics and is this a written paper or a presentation? Also what is the format of most of the exams? Are they multiple choice and based on rote memory or do we get to apply concepts we learned more?

Thanks!

The thesis is a 30 page library-based paper you complete with a faculty advisor. At the beginning of the year, you'll get a list of the faculty with their topics and expectations and you'll pick one. There are a lot of topics to choose from and they cover lots of different areas of medicine.

The exams are all multiple choice (with the exception of one class' practical exams, which are free response). Hate to break it to you, but the didactic part of medical school is basically entirely straight memorization. Every class will incorporate what you're learning with various "clinical correlates" to get you to start thinking about what happens when things start going wrong in the body (and will test on those), but you need a base of knowledge (i.e. memorization) to even get that far.

To add to Daedalus' comments:

The thesis is pretty much a year-long project. Topic/faculty assignments are made in early September. The paper is due in mid-May, and you figure out your schedule with your faculty adviser. Usually you have an outline due in December, and you're expected to submit maybe a half dozen drafts so that your adviser can give feedback. One thing to know about this project is that you're likely to be working on a topic in which your adviser is currently doing research. Your adviser may have been working in that research area since before you were born, or just recently.

Also about multiple choice question format: it's the standard whether you're at a big or small school with didactic or independent or PBL curriculum. I could argue that your ability to choose the correct answer depends heavily on your ability to apply a concept to a situation. When you get to the wards 3rd year, you still have to answer direct questions from your resident. Recall recall recall.

For perspective, you might want to get a look at a board prep book, and see the structure of board questions. I'm only slightly joking by describing them thusly:

Q: 32 year old pregnant female presents with abdominal pain for the last 3 days, afebrile, history significant for smoking (10 pack years) and asthma. Patient complains of blurred vision, nausea and mood swings. Patient uses an inhaler 2x/day and has had one acute asthma crisis in the last year. What is a physiologic response to injected epinephrine?
1. fever
2. muscle relaxation
3. decreased heart rate
4. glycogenolysis
5. <term you've never seen before>
6. <term you've never seen before>
7. all of the above
8. 4 and 5
9. 4 and 7

so this format also applies to the exams we will be taking during the med masters year? I assume so because the exams we take are the same as the exams the M1s take correct?

What are the good places to live around the school? I know there's Pembroke Towers and Hague Towers, but is there anything else? What are people's recommendations?
