Evms

ok..well based on what they said about taking people from the waitlist last year (about half their class came from it) you should probably get in...last question...when did you call or when did you find out? and are you IS or OOS?

I called today, i'm OOS from TExas.

I just called evms and they told me I'm on the upper 1/3 waitlist. they will start pulling the waitlisters in march. They also told me that you can be pulled from a lower 1/3 as well as a upper 1/3. So I guess being in the upper 1/3 is not that great.

this is how the waitlist moves there:

male oos gets replaced with male oos
female is gets replaced with female is

can someone explain me how it works? and why do they break it in thirds in the first place? what's the advantage of being in the upper third over the middle of the waitlist?

Well I think it is favorable to be in the top 1/3 if you are OOS. For example, you might be in the bottom 1/3 and IS, but you will be chosen over OOS above you.
At least that is my impression.

i think they already set their quota for OOS << IS. so whenever a spot opens they fill that spot based on that percentage.
For waitlisted people it basically comes down to which matriculant gives up a spot.
for example: if OOStater gives up a sit, it automatically goes to another OOS. but what does it mean in terms of one's position on a waitlist???

I think the top 3rd go first. Last year's thread has people moving between the 3rds (i.e. in top 1/3 moved to middle then back up). so they must re-evaluate waitlisters with some frequency.

Honestly, I think I may have just confused myself.. I'm sorry. haha

at least you haven't tried calling 4 times this week! AHHH, it is driving me crazy. They keep telling me when the next time the AdCom meets and that I should call back afterwards or that I should call back the following morning etc.

Here's to hoping for tomorrow!!!!

just out of curiosity, when is the next time the adcom meets?

Yay! I never thought this day would come! EVMS called me today to tell me I was accepted. Probably because I called them like a bajillion times this week. Adcom met today.

For those of you who were accepted, were your interviews...surprisingly short? My interview was less than 30 minutes! I know it's good to be concise, but last year, I interviewed for much longer. I guess it might depend on the interviewer. I had Dr. Andrews, he was soo cool.

mine wasn't all that short. It lasted about 45 - 1hr, but I wouldn't use that as a gauge of how you did. I've seen posts by other people from other med schools thinking that they were going to be rejected when they were in fact accepted. I also saw longer ones where they were rejected despite the interviewee saying he/she thought the adcom was "interested" in them. So you really don't know.

I interviewed on 10/12 and am OOS. Got accepted yesterday by phone call!

Ya, I had Dr. Andrews and mine was about 40 minutes I would say. He asked me a lot of tough questions (ethical, and healthcare system questions) but we also talked about OB/GYN stuff and his work with Hilary Clinton. I was accepted and I'm oos. You are lucky to have had him, I think out of my many med school interviews, he has definitely been one of the nicest 🙂

Dissed today by EVMS...

What a great feeling!

pre-secondary!

i know sad, right?

I got screened through California schools like UCI and UCD which are ostensibly more competitive for OOS residents, but I am not good enough for a EVMS secondary even, obviously...

meh, I'm not bitter...
promise...
the first one hurts though

sort of weird you got an interview and I got rejected pre-sec, with slightly higher stats....
I wonder why...

ah, you are in-state
that's probably why...

wow that's kind of rude. you should focus on how you're doing and stop making it seem like that person isn't deserving of the interview she earned. and i'm not sure how you have higher stats if she has a 3.63 and you have a 3.3? i'm sorry about your rejection, but there is much more to an app than just mcat scores and gpa.

how do u know she has a 3.3? but anyways, it's not rude, it is the randomness of this system that makes us all wonder "why did I get rejected". I'm sure you have received some rejections and thought to yourself....well that's unfair... but we all get over it and realize that sometimes there are things we can't control. and yes, if you are a VA resident it will be easier to get into evms, uva, and vcu, even an interviewer told me that. So essentially, 33Tchica is kind of right.

if you look at old posts, she's written she has a 3.3 with a 3.05 science gpa. so i don't really understand the better stats part. and yes, i have received some rejections and thought to myself, oh that sucks, i would've been really great there. but what i didn't do was, hm, that's weird, my stats are better than this person, i wonder why they got an interview and i got rejected. i was just expressing that i didn't think it was very nice to say 'you got an interview and i got rejected even though i have better stats'.

Does anyone know if you really do find out within two weeks after interviewing at evms?

i hope so. they didn't mention when we would find out at my interview, so i called the next day to ask, and they said 3 weeks though.

oh...when did you interview luckycharm?

They say it's 3 weeks, but it's closer to 3 and a half if you interviewed on a Friday.

BTW anyone wanting to chat on the EVMS class of 2012 thread can do so on the Allopathic class forum! yay! come and hang out =)

how long does it take for snail mail?

What a great feeling!

That sucks. At least they sent you a rejection. They've completely ignored me (pre-secondary too) for 5 weeks.

francisco84, it depends on the interviewer and when he turns in all the forms. Thats what i was told today anyway! Anyway I hope we find out soon?!?! btw who were ur interviewers?

I have totally spaced on their names but I can describe them:

The Adcom member was a local physician (family med) who was, ehem, on the round side

Another was the former head of cardiothoracic surg., very southern, wore a bowtie

The last was a 4th year who would be doing a military residency the next year

I neeed to know, but then again too afraid to call. how long does it take for snail mail notification? Anyone?

Most people seemed to get it a couple weeks after they called.... They sent my letter to my old address so I have yet to receive it (my decision was made in mid September)...but it's no big deal they told me. But good luck! Hope you get in.

Thanks! Yea maybe I should just get the nerve to call and just get it over with.

I think it was the 10th.

anyone know when the adcom is meeting this week?

so i got put on the waitlist today!! 🙁🙁🙁

I talked to the lady and she told me I would be in the upper 1/3 part of the waitlist. I asked her why I was waitlisted. I asked her why I was waitlisted and she told me there are no more spots available! How can they run out of spots so quickly?? She told me I had a good chance of getting accepted but I dunno how much to believe this. I am instate. I had a friend who was not accepted from the waitlist who was also instate! I am pretty bummed today. EVMS was one of my favorite schools.

Is EVMS very difficult to get in to as an OOS applicant? Do you guys know what percent of each class is OOS (I'm too lazy to research right now, so if you don't feel like answering don't)? Can you comment on the area, it looked beautiful to me.

What?! Seriously?!

Dang! I haven't even interviewed yet! Sweet, I get to go all the way down there for a waitlist spot? wtf....

(and sorry about the waitlist, I feel your pain)

Beachblonde don't worry. Maybe what she told me is not the whole story. I am pretty sure they have more acceptance spots available. Good luck on your interview.

Damn, yeah I've got an interview there very very soon and that kinda sucks if I'm driving all the way down there just to interview for their waitlist in the middle of November.

discouraging everyone was not my purpose! 😳 I was wondering if the same thing was said to someone else, or was it just me ?!?!?! You guys do your best on your interviews dun let my comments worry you as it is a reallyyyyyy nice school !!

:luck::luck::luck::luck:

I dont think they fill up the class right away. They probably leave open spots. I think they pick the candidates they want, and put others on waitlist while leaving open spots for other future candidates.

Don't worry too much about spots being filled up (IF they are, which I doubt). A big chunk of the matriculating class is usually comprised of waitlisters (I was middle 3rd, IS last year). If you find yourself in a waitlist situation, I definitely recommend following up at appropriate times with letters of update/interest as the months roll on. Stay in regular contact, it helps (just don't be an annoying psycho stalker 😉 ) Goodluck!

called yesterday, waitlisted (IS)

when did you interview?

Also guys do they determine everyone who interviewed on the same day together or I might hear later than someone who interviewed on my day? Anyone know?

Thanks!

if you don't mind me asking, what month were you accepted last year?

also when (after the waitlist) do you recommend sending the letter of interest? [so that it wouldn't be too late] 😳
thank you. your post gave me a bit of hope.
